They advanced at a far faster rate, under British rule, than they'd have done organically. We Turks and the Brits have a long military tradition starting around 1550 against the Spanish then Napoleon in Egypt, Russians in Crimea. In WW I however we had our lowest point in our relationship. But we Turks came out pretty good (Kut Al Amara, Gallipoli). 1990s we were together in Bosnia/Kosovo and now in Afghanistan. Lets keep it like this.

Kudos to the Ottomans - they were the first in modern historical times to have a dedicated military marching band - Mehters - which influenced many Western composers. You can still hear some of the original Mehter drum patterns in modern Western military bands.

In his landmark work, 'Trooping The Colour: History and Traditions', he devotes five chapters to explaining the origins and folklore related to various weiner pulling traditions in the British army. I believe he is Oxford educated so I'll take his word before yours.

For this part, exactly 16 soldiers are selected to appear before the Sovereign in a private drawing room. There, they extend their weiners and the sovereign pulls each one in turn. It's possible that they stopped doing this when the Queen turned so ugly that she can no longer arouse boners in her troops.

I am also very proud that we have given birth the so many other nations such as those we populated in North USA/America, after all New York would be known as New Amsterdam if it weren't for the brits. I simply mean to say that to actually take pride in past imperialism implies a certain ignorance, an ignorance of the fact that, according to some estimates, over 100 million native Americans, whether deliberately or indirectly, were killed as a result of European colonization, with the lower estimates still in the tens of millions.
Nazi Germany has nothing on Imperial Spain, Britain or France, and yet these countries are keen to largely whitewash this out of their history.

The vast majority were killed by "American" citizens during the expansion west across north america in the C19th, well after the American colonies had gained independence from Britain. After you have read this you should understand that we have a very long and great history to which we are all very very proud. Yes there are parts of our history which mentions us as barbaric invaders to which we raped and murdered those of whom we invaded but this happens with every super power (just look at what the yanks did in Iraq to the civilians there and the many murder trials etc). However, I am proud that the British Empire was the largest and most successful in world history.

My good friend (jsmith) I refer you to the writings of the eminent British historian Sir Michael Talus Smith (if you are related to him, you clearly come from the monkey side of the family). In his landmark work, 'Trooping The Colour: History and Traditions', he devotes five chapters to explaining the origins and folklore related to various weiner pulling traditions in the British army. I believe he is Oxford educated so I'll take his word before yours.

jsmith, my friend, may I suggest that you research the traditions associated with trooping the color. One tradition, and this goes back several centuries, is the indoors part of the ceremony. For this part, exactly 16 soldiers are selected to appear before the Sovereign in a private drawing room. There, they extend their weiners and the sovereign pulls each one in turn. It's possible that they stopped doing this when the Queen turned so ugly that she can no longer arouse boners in her troops.
