Totally did not know that about the gates at the end to just stay up there at the top! Usually died about two or three times at those things! Good job!
Loved this game. I remember feeling pretty psyched after completing it on the old NES when I was a kid. Only much later on did I find out that it was considered one of the hardest NES games ever. Now I feel pretty boss having beat it. I doubt I could do it now though.
This was one of my favorite games when I was growing up. I sold all of my NES stuff back about 15 years ago to make some extra cash for a new motherboard for a PC I was building. I regret it now. But, I did recently find relief. While browsing the Wii shop, I found it, and it's just how I remember it.
Well, the game of wich this game was based (Gradius) was created in 1985, and the arcade Salamander version was released in 1986, and the NES port in 1987, the same year R-Type was released in the arcades :)
The second boss of this game is actually called Intruder(from the instruction manual). And Oh, there is a safety attack for this boss... Destroy all defense pylons and fly toward the hole you made follow the path moves, shoot until it dies...
In the Japanese version itself (known as Salamander), the credits are kept as is, but for whatever reason, the credits were taken out in the US version itself. Normally, beating a video game would net you the credits of the people who worked their butts off making said game.
God damn it! And I thought the dodging part in the Commodore 64 port looked hard. But... this is madness... MADNESS? THIS IS... ehhh never mind... LOL
I have to say that many of these bosses look exceptionally easy and have weak strategies/firepower... Still, if the actual between boss fights are any good, I gues it makes up for it.
After Parodius I stopped questioning any logic in any of Konami's shooters..

A little cheating going on here, but still a good boss showcase if nothing else.

Heres an idea for recording
set your screen resolution low before going fullscreen
maybe then it wont lag as bad
shalpp 2 years ago
The "lag" is purely Youtube's fault. I record my videos at a high FPS.
Also I don't record full screen - it wastes harddrive space.

Salamander 2 is pretty epic as well, it's actually better than the original in some spots (music, bosses)
