Liverpool is without a doubt one of the most musically and athletically talented cities the world over, here's just another piece of evidence in favor of that statement.
Being English, Cilla could have taken USA by storm in the 1960s alongside The Beatles, Herman thing, Rolling Stones etc. This was The English Empire all over again - LITERALLY!! The Beatles LITERALLY colonized 80 per cent of the planet!!

if cilla had had voice training, her real voice would have been altered forever. that's what training does to your voice. a natural voice has to be left alone.
Sons went both ways across the Atlantic back then. But seldom did U.S. singers have hits bigger than the UK singers. And many UK singers took their versions to the States and sold bucketloads of singles!
I suspect Cilla only made a career at all because she came from Liverpool and happened to know the Beatles - and the BBC always favoured UK recordings over foreign (ie. superior American) ones.
@TheAremo - Actually one of the more remarkable versions I've heard was Wynonna Judd's for the "One Amazing Night" tribute of Burt Bacharch..far better than Black's or Warwicks...more tuneful to be sure and far more emotive.
I would have love to hear her with this strong of an orchestra when her was still tender back in the 60's... Some of you take this too serious... Each singer from, Warwick, Black, Springfield, and Isley bring something to the song... That's what makes a great composition enduring...
All she does is shout, she destroyed the soulfullness of the original. Hardly a surprise as she murdered every song she attempted to "sing". She so obviously modelled herself on Florence Foster Jenkins. Anyone who likes Cilla should listen to Florence singing The Queen Of The Night, you'll love it.
In the 60's, Burt Bacharach and Hal David had a string of AMAZING hits in the UK & USA. They had popular UK singers record their songs for release in the UK, and they had Dionne Warwick record many of their songs for American release to appeal to different cultures and general tastes at the time.
"Anyone Who Had a Heart" belongs to BOTH Cilla and Dionne, and they both do Wonderful versions of this song. Can't we just enjoy them BOTH ?
@NikkiVideo It's not true to say Burt Bacharach approved of Cilla's version. He wrote this song for Dionne and also produced her version. Before he could do so members of Cilla's management team made a pirate recording of Dionne singing this song in Paris. They then rushed Cilla into the studio so they could get Cilla's version released before bacharach could release Dionne's original version. It was so rushed Cilla couldn't even get the words right.
@JohnAGood ..Dear John ...Dionne Warwick was NOT marketable in the UK in the early 60's as Cilla Black was NOT marketable in the USA in the early 60's. That is WHY Bacharach CHOSE to have the different singers record and release versions of HIS songs in their specific countires and markets. Cilla's release of a version of the same Bacharach-David song was NOT considered a threat to Dionne, and vice-versa. To say that CIlla Black "STOLE" the song from Dionne Warwick is laugable.
@NikkiVideo This is simply not the case, up until Anyone Who Had A Heart Cilla had only had a minor hit in the UK. This was to be the big break through for Dionne Warwick. Cilla's version was realeased without the permission of Bacharach who'd produced Dionne's version of the song. Many British artists used to cover American artists songs at that time withput obtaining permission. Dionne was so angry about Cilla stealing her song sge took out an injunction to try and stop it happpening again,
@NikkiVideo As for Dionne not being marketable her next release Walk On By was a huge hit in the UK. As for Alfie It was felt a British artist was needed to record the song to compliment what was a Britidh film. Bacharach agreed to produce Cilla singing this song. In the ene Cilla decided she didn't want her version to be used si in fact the song was never used ib the film. This is the only occasion Bacharach produced Cilla.
@JohnAGood : I did not see the quotes from Cilla that you mentioned in Wikipedia, but I DID see the following : "In the UK, a number of Bacharach-David-Warwick songs were covered by UK singers Cilla Black, Sandie Shaw and Dusty Springfield, most notably Black's "Anyone Who Had a Heart" which went to #1 in the UK. This upset Warwick and she has described feeling insulted when told that in the UK, record company executives wanted her songs recorded by someone else...."
@NikkiVideo It was British record executives not Bacharach wh preffered to have British artists sing songs he'd written for Dionne. Otherwise it would not have been neccesary to make a bootleg version of Dionne singing the song in Paris, Nor would Bacharach have bothered to release Dionne's version in the UK.. Dionne certainly was marketable in the UK and had a huge hit with her next relese Walk On By.
@NikkiVideo Try again Just enter Anyone Who Had A Heart and you will find Cilla's quote. You may not think Cilla stole this song but Dionne Warwick certainly thinks she did.
@NikkiVideo Quote from Wikipedia Cilla black interviewed for Great Performances expressed her of Warwick's disenchantment. " it was a number 1 hit Dionne was dead choked and she's never forgiven me to this day. You are also wrong to say Dionne did not appeal inr the UK. She had big hits with Walk On By, You'll Never Get To Heaven, Reach Out For me Do You Know The Way To San Jose, Theme From The Valley Of The Dools, to name but a few. To this day she still packs them in on her visits to the UK.
@JohnAGood : In the early 60's, UK Music excecutives were VERY conservative and felt that the UK TV audience would not embrace Black singers. If you recall, Dusty Springfield, had to FIGHT with UK TV Executives to ALLOW her to have Black female BACK-UP singers appear on her show. Not until the mid-60's was Dionne Warwick ALLOWED to break through the racial barriers and appear on UK TV performing her US and UK hit version of 'Walk On By'. Her string of UK Hits then followed.
@NikkiVideo To this day Dionne has never forgien Cilla for the way she pirated this song that was written for her.
I know many people like Cilla's version, personally I thought she murdered every song she ever attempted to "sing". Cilla's vocal "skills" are very much akin to Florence Foster Jenkin's version of The Queen Of The Night.
Burt Bacharach personally CHOSE CIlla to record many of his songs and personally arranged and recorded Cilla covering his songs for UK release.
Look for a Wonderful Video of Burt Bacharach HIMSELF in the studio arranging and recording Cilla singing his song "Alfie" for UK release.. Burt had Dionne record "ALFIE" for US release.
To think Cilla "stole" the song from Dionne is silly when Bacharach had to have given PERMISSION for her to have recorded HIS song.
@NikkiVideo The last thing Bacharach wanted was anyone covering a song he wrote and produced for Dionne Warwick whom he regarded as his artist. I heard Dionne recall how Cilla's management made a pirate version of her performance of this song at a live version in paris so they could release her version first. Even Cilla has said how she wishes Dionne would forgive her for stealing this song after more than forty years.
@NikkiVideo If you look up Anyone Who Had A Heart into Wikipedia you will find quotes from both Dionne and Cilla confirming my account of events all those years ago.

Cilla was a cloakroom girl who happened to be in the right place at the right time.
She almost whispers the low notes and then lets rip with harsh nasally out of tune top notes, with nothing whatsoever in between. She sounds like a cat on heat giving it the full chorus in the middle of the night, she was to pop what Florence Foster Jenkins was to opera. Dionne Warwick sings this song with real beauty and soul, Cilla completely destroyed it with her truly dreadful singing, shame on her.
"Anyone who sniffs that fart will know that I dropped one".
This was Cilla's 2nd U.K chart hit of 21 & her 1st of 11 top 10 hits & her 1st U.K number 1 of 2 number 1's. Although I like her & a lot of her songs she never had any sex appeal & in this video looks like someone's mum's got up to sing.
If you like this version of the song, check out the older clip of Cilla singing it live in 1965 with Beatles producer George Martin conducting the orchestra behind her. Her vocals are even more powerful--she gives it her all, and it's an extraordinary performance.
@waratah08 that comment is nonsense. dionne's recording was the first and the defininite version and it sounds more authentic. Cilla can't handle the chord changes well, at least she can't play them off like Dionne.

her version of you've lost that loving feeling came out one day before { in england} the rightious bros. released their version in the u.s.. she was huge in the uk back in the day
I think her voice is very strong and clear, yes, there are moments when its light but all in all she has the pipes and can belt with the best of them!
the '64 live version is much better. She is far more classy/ pretty,,,,and the scene is more of a jazz club & sound. But if you listen to that '64 version...the break is shorter than the original song.I do not know if this was their intention or not.
@dramaticguy yes indeed she did, so much so that she started to talk about what she would release to throw Cilla off the trail. Her hatred is still evident in the way Ms Warwick talks about her when she comes over to the UK.
Cilla never really did it for me - though she had great material. She was no Dusty. and here, she looks like a housewife having a meltdown. I guess I will always be a Dusty (Duffy) fan. I just don't see why Cilla was considered so great across the pond - and we love our british white soul gals here ...
Great to see this live version of 'Heart' back on YouTube. Cilla will always be remembered as a fantastic singer before she hit our T.V. screens and became Britain's Queen of Light Entertainment.
Marvelous how, when you have loved rock music all of your life from late 60's and early 70's prog rock, right through to Kings of Leon and more current day performers, Cilla Black had such a fantastic voice with range and passion and it has only been for the last couple of years that I have realised this. Thanks Cilla

Dear Cilla, I heard you already decades ago, saw you with the Beatles, and I keep on listening to your most beautiful voice for the rest of my life.

Is a great song,Miss Dionne Warwick got furious at UK singers bringing out her songs in the UK before she had a chance to release them.
Cilla's version of the song is my fav thou.
dramaticguy 2 years ago 19

Her and Dusty Springfiled were world class soul singers and were recognised as such by the black music industry in the US at the time.

Marvelous how, when you have loved rock music all of your life from late 60's and early 70's prog rock, right through to Kings of Leon and more current day performers, Cilla Black had such a fantastic voice with range and passion and it has only been for the last couple of years that I have realised this. Thanks Cilla

I'll second that, Black was pretty cool before she became a TV personality.
