I have a different ranking. 1. Muhammad Ali 2. Joe Louis 3. Larry Holmes ( a total prick, but a great heavyweight boxer) 4. George Foreman 5. Smokin Joe Frazier 6. Sonny Liston 7. Jack Johnson 8. Rocky Marciano 9. Jack Dempsey 10. From there on it difficult to rank. I'd say Evander Holyfield.
Larry is one of the most bitter men in sports history, also he's one of the most jealous......all larry wants to here is that he's the greatest...larry your not!!!!
Foreman would have raped Holmes in his prime so Larry needs to get a clue. Holmes was a great boxer but great analyst he is not. Anyone who isn't him can't box according to himself.
@adrenacrumb I doubt it, I really think Holmes could beat him by Unanimous Decision, considering the type of scientific fighter he is... I rank Foreman really high though, #8 is too low, I rank him #5...
@Icyhotboo Foreman broke Chuvalo's nose so badly he was having to spit the blood out of his mouth. You don't curl up in a little ball in the corner and expect the ref to not stop it, he also said he did get hit with a good punch while he was in his scared like a bitch ball. Chuvalo is full of shit, I wish they had gone another round so Foreman could have broken his ribs too.
@Icyhotboo Foreman went harder and longer than this with Lyle and Lyle was actually hitting him unlike Chuvalo who barely put a glove on him. He may have been tired but he would have still murdered Chuvalo had that gone on for 2 more minutes.
@Icyhotboo The only reason he got too tired to fight Ali after 8 rounds of punching like this is because Ali was actually jabbing the shit out of him and had him hurt, Chuvalo would have had to go through at least 5 more rounds of being brutally beaten to even stand a chance bewcause he sure wasn't going to pepper him like Ali did.
George did what Larry Holmes wished that he could have done. I tuned in to watch some respected experts give their valued opinions and got Larry whining about a guy who (had they met) would eventually have cut off his "lateral movement" and sent him into dreamland. George Foreman is an inspiration who not only resurrected his career and and his legacy, but his person as well. Get over yourself, Larry. We all know how great that you were. It's okay to admit that someone may have been better...
IF Larry Holmes had come back for George Foreman instead of Mike Tyson, he would have had a chance to become champion again. Maybe he would have made a great deal of money as well.
Instead he chose to fight Iron Mike for 2.8 Million.
Well this is it... he made the wrong decisions.
He chose to fight Muhammad Ali as well. That was an no win situation. why did he do that. That's not smart.
With all due respect to Larry, I think he'd find himself higher rated if he was a little more sportsman-like about things, not so bitter. His achievements were without a doubt very impressive, one of the best fighters in history IMHO, but he acts like such a bitter man that it takes away from it I think.
Larry is right about the left hook. If you look at the 10th round he hit moorer with some good left hooks before that right hand that knocked him out.
Holmes had the best left jab in the history of heavyweight boxing, now this opinion is coming from an Ali fan.Holms' jab was as fast but harder he also jabed to the body frequently which was something Ali didn't do that often.Styles make fights and I would have Larry over George.Larry is bitter 'cause during Big Georges' second incarnation Larry wanted to get it on with the big guy, George didnt want anything to do with Larry. They actually signed to fight but George pulled out.Research people!!
1:53 ...come oooon - that shit coming out of another boxers mouth is pretty pathetic. Foreman won that night - he should get credit for that. He won the championship at 45 . Larry you should shut the fuck up.......3:27 same shit. Shut the fuck up all of you...I am NOT a big Foreman fan but this is not fair.
there is no problem with larry,he's in the 2% badass club.lots of fights lots of wins ,and held the title a long time.theres no prob with any of these great heavys seen or mentioned here.
It's true; Foreman did have trouble with slicksters, but they had to be at the very top of their game: he's immensely strong. You had to avoid feeling the force of his bombs for 5-6 rounds, then capitalize as he weakened. Holmes was susceptible to a right hand. He was dropped by Shavers when moving to his left after Shavers had been trying for a million dollar righthander with some pretty desperate swings for several rounds. So I say the 1973-4 Foreman beats peak Holmes by round four.
@madmax8903 ~Jimmy Young being one of those slicksters who beat a prime Foreman BUT Foreman is an unique guy. I think he beats Larry in both boxing careers and a I think highly of Larry as a boxer/fighter.
@theonlysaltspring --Larry Holmes would have stopped Foreman a la Ali. If you talk about "slicksters" Holmes was a better much slicker tan Young, with a decent right hand and perhaps the greatest jab ever. Foreman would have been on the end of Larry's jab all night long--both comebacks.
I like Larry, but he spends too much time here just pointing to Foreman's flaws, and not giving him credit for his strengths. No one points at Holmes and judges him on almost getting KO'd by Renaldo Snipes, thumbing Scott LeDoux, or maybe getting some gift decisions late in his title reign.
The problem with Larry is that he thinks he is the better of all times and will always be dismissive about other heavyweights like Ali or Foreman. In 1974 right after Ali vs Foreman he already called himself the better fighter, unfortunately for him, nobody pays attention.
oh and foreman ripped chuvalo up with his jab and showed good footwork in that fight, only unloading the big punches when chuvalo was in trouble. Foreman knocked out a prime norton in 2 rounds. Holmes in his prime won a close decision over an out of prime norton.
@bcibibcibcpCB Couldn't Agree with you more. None boxing fans or fake fans, think Tyson is god. When in reality when he faced the best opposition out there he crumbled.
larry holmes is the most underated heavy weight in history and anyone who claims that big swingin foreman is higher on their top ten heavyweights really doesnt know what hte fuck they r talkin about .Bert stupid also ranks evander holyfeild and mike tyson above lennox lewis and gene tunney above every fighter ive mentioned . That's why Mike pulled out of their proposed 1989 fight. The sparring they did in Catskill took place when they were teenagers.Bert Sugar is a know it all cunt that knows nothing.
@theonlysaltspring Easily, Foreman would probably get rid of Tyson in 2 or 3 rounds. Watch Foreman-Cooper, I think even Old George would get rid of Tyson in 5 or 6.
