watched an iterview with Gary L. the song New York is about a girl he was seeing n didnt work out because of time, distance etc. but hey, i think its great that we all have our own interptretations of lyrics. words are very powerful n emotive.
I could just as easily listen to this song on my CD, on repeat, endlessly. But I figured I'd come to youtube today and instead listen to it with other people who appreciate the power of this song. I wonder how many listens there'll be by the end of the day..... 25,586 and counting.
Also, Gary Lightbody cheated on his girlfriend several years ago. Basically, all his albums and songs are about that one girl, wanting to make it up to her etc... If you listen to each Snow Patrol song, they all relate to love lost and trying to redeem his failure as a boyfriend. Listen to every album from Songs For Polar Bear to this album. I think everyone is trying to guess what this song is about, but if you've actually listened to his previous albums it should pretty much make sense.
The last verse just gave me chills down my spine... It's so hopeful and it's a great way to end such a sad but perfect song. I think he's apologising to his wife and he's saying that he'll find his (forgotten) old self again.
I love this song! I relate to it a lot. I'm 22 and when I was younger I fit into some degree... I had good friends and several girlfriends. Now, I have social phobia (freeze up even in front of my family) so I avoid everyone and I feel like I am forever falling and no one and nothing is there to catch me. And I can't fix what's wrong with me... I think Gary was referring to his own fallen empire, as their popularity has fallen drastically over the past few years.
I'm not exactly sure what the true meaning of this song is, but the album itself and a couple of the songs in it (including this one) could be symbolic of the U.S. The title is called Fallen Empires, and there is a bald eagle on the cover, the symbol of the United States. America is struggling with difficult political and economical issues, and is on the path of "falling." Also, there are songs titled "New York" and "The President," both of which could be referencing the U.S.A.
@technicoloredlife its about girl or guy that thinks she knows what she or he is doing but ends up just messing up everything up. he or she could've asked for help but chose to be ignorant and not listen. another slightly similar translation would be instead of messing everything up she got him or herself killed or committed suicide.
@TheTMVProject I don't think it goes as deep as suicide. I've been listening to Snow Patrol since their first album "Song for Polar Bears". Gary pretty talks about the same girl in his songs. It's nothing to do with suicide. It's more simple. He's basically saying to other people, family, friends and people in his social circle if anyone is going to ask him or the girl for help. He wants to know if anyone will try and help their relationship before it completely fades out.
In an interview, Gary said he'd written it for (and about) one of the homeless men he used to talk to when he went for a walk, when he lived in Santa Monica while writing and recording this album. I'll Never Let Go was written for another of them.
A president doesnt rule an Empire, an Emperor does... An emperor is a monarch, higher in status than a King or Queen, a president is elected into office...
@TightASSspanker while will all have our opinion and to the 31 likes.......if you had a point...may have had more respect if you used more respectul language...that is the worse word...am assuming you are male and unfortunately their is not an equally offensive word that I can use towards you or the 31 others who like your commment.....if you have an opinion....fine...i respect that.....but your language takes away from how you may be or may not be feelin.insulted as a female
@B182LoveRR Not sure, I wonder that too. Maybe the title is metaphoric for someone who goes through many highs and lows (like a President does, faces many struggles). You could also say that this is where the album title "Fallen Empires" comes into it. A President is basically like a leader of an Empire right? I guess you can put two and two together. The album is about Gary's struggles, specifically on love and loss. It's like he's talking about his own Empire I guess. Yeah, it's pretty deep.
@B182LoveRR I guess as a President, it gets tough, sometimes to the point you come to the end of the road and don't know what to do. I reckon that's how Gary feels, and I think it's what he is trying to express with this song. That's why it's the last vocal track on the album. It's an end. Thus, the album ends with the lyrics, "I will take the road forgotten, again..."

This song is so powerful. I don't think its about suicide... sounds like substance abuse to me.

@myapumpkin It was an example, not to literally say that a President is an actual Emperor. People get the point anyway.
