  • God and jesus are the only way to get to the Far green country under a swift sunrise you must realize this :)

  • @TheEpicBalrog You know, one of the reasons why Tolkein's work is so much more relatable than C.S. Lewis' is that he doesn't beat you over the head with his religion, Pippin admits he isn't sure what's out there, Gandalf offers some NON-JUDGMENTAL comfort and your sort, you always ruin it. How can we claim certainties we don't really have? It would be nothing more than intellectual dishonesty. This is a fantasy story, don't make it an anvil for your own beliefs. xx

  • @bangsmccoy1989 Great comment

  • @TheEpicBalrog

That's not true, everybody is entitled their own opinion.

  • 240p........ we meet again my old friend.

  • Okay, I don't watch LOTR, but i've seen Gandalf's death scene. The look he gives just before he falls is really....idk. Is this him after he dies, he came back and now he's happy?

  • @TheHoIIy Dude, you need to see Lord of the Rings. You will understand then.

  • @JimJamBimBam1 Hahah okay, i'll watch them later.

  • @TheHoIIy Yup..this is him after he's 'reserected'.Gandalf was a Christ analogy..he died, went into 'Hell',aka the Shadow, fought the beast, won, and came back to save humanity at the last moment.

  • @proud2bpagan Yep thats exactly what that is thanks for getting all of these people to get it! :) i love how gandalf is the Savior in the movie its so obvious but so impossible to figure out.

  • @proud2bpagan No, Jesus was God in human form. Gandalf was a Maiar. His culture was the Istari, also known as the Wizards. They were conjoined in a council. The Istari were sent to Middle Earth to oppose Sauron. Gandalf was a wizard, a Maiar, much different then a type of God, or God himself. Sauron was a Maiar aswell.

  • @jokerman148 i said 'alagory',as in he served as a *symbol*. I wasn't actually concerned w/his lineage,i was speaking as to what Tolkien,a devout Catholic, was attemping to represent.

  • @proud2bpagan Exactly, but there you're wrong again, Tolkien wasn't trying to represent Gandalf as Jesus. That is just watch readers and watchers alike see Gandalf as. As i've states, Gandalf was not Jesus, and Tolkien wrote what he believed. If he thought Gandalf as a "symbolic" Jesus, he would of that that clear. This movie is made by Peter Jackson, not Tolkien, so different views.

  • @TheHoIIy He knows he has to die and fight death at the end but he has seen the heavens now he isnt afraid he is at peace and is happy to see the Far green country followed by a swift sunrise again. :)

  • As much as I love the quote I'm not sure you even used a capture device and just a camcorder. Yeah the quality is bull spit

  • I watch this everyday. And it inspires me to live my life without fearing death, because "death is just another path. One that we all must take."

  • Now I'm excited to die :)

  • Gandalf is just comforting Pippin. He doesn't truly know the the fate of Men when they die, but he is too purehearted to tell him that. A harmless white lie he tells in the movie, much like when he tells Aragorn his "heart" tells him Frodo is alive. No it didn't. Gandalf is a higher being, but not Ilúvatar itself.

  • I click on this video because the other video`s quality is rubbish. And this one is even bloody worse!

  • What if I would come to Middle-Earth when I die? Or Tamriel? Or outer space Star Wars/Mass Effect esque universe? After hearing this speech, I am actually less frightened about death. When my time comes, I hope I can take death as a grand adventure somewhere.

And of course, I wish to die fighting a huge alien spacecraft before it blows me to bits with a huge fuck-off giant death ray. Would be sweet :)

  • Death is merely a transition. A funeral is only a sad time for the living, the dead have gone home.

  • the reason why a "God" wasn't mentioned or person at the end of that shore is because it is written so that anyone can interpert it anyway they want to it just simply meant as there is a hereafter and it is beautiful.

  • @nostalgiatrip1 though the universe has some gods and one i believe did bring him back to help fight against the evil. idk the gods name just search it in the wiki and you will probably find it

  • @EffectiveKill I know but I meant in the adaptations they made it very open, for the general audience.

  • Im listening to this on Dec 20th at 11:59pm

  • @Shanor909 why is that?

  • @noodynoodz u know the myth we all die then even thought its likely not gonna happen, im taking my chances

  • If only a far green country were real. Still, nothing that Christians tell you about eternal life will ever be more beautiful than this.

  • Dont worry about death dont think about death coz theres not a thing u or i can do about it. As Gandalf said its a road WE ALL must take. im not brave but im going to try and meet it as i lived life head high and march right on in. just hope it works.

  • "And the ship went out into the High Sea and passed into the West, until at last on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise."

Return of the King, Book VI, Chapter 9

  • "I will not say Do not weep, for not all tears are an evil."

  • Just...beautiful.

  • I don't care what happens after i die.. i just want to se my friend again..

  • I WANNA DIE...

  • This makes me unafraid of death, although I'm more afraid of how I'll die.

  • @berserker276 hello, from Band of Brothers.

I'm Muslim and now 26 and a School Teacher.

Anyway, i admit i have done some sinful and naughty things. But i also have done good Earthly and Good Religious things.

I used to be afraid of death and like you said, i'm afraid of how i will die though :(.

Although i know the 21.12.2012 is BS, but even if it does happen, i'm not afraid of it. Because it just means 'The End'.

The creator of LOTR is a man i feel sorry for becoz of his WWI exp

  • @nodinitiative Hello again, same here. I think everyone is like that, afraid of how they're going to die. I too feel sorry for Tolkien as he lost 2 of his best friends in the Great War, he saw action at the Somme and that first day was the bloodiest day in British Army history, so he must've seen terrifying stuff. He'd be 120 if he were alive I think, 101 years my senior.

  • @berserker276 I want to die when i'm 80 and on my bed and my cock surounded by young women :)

Yup, that war was really crazy. The idea of dying for your country is easy, but to kill or be wounded by it is more tragic.

At least, if you died, you are dead. If you kill, if you have a good soul, that kill will slowly tear away your sanity. If you get wounded, that wound would also tear away your sanity.

  • @nodinitiative Hmm, I'm not as obsessed with women as you seem to be lol. If I die in war, I just hope it to be quick and painless but knowing my luck it'll be long and painful.

  • @berserker276 lol...I thought you would call me out on my Game of Thrones Reference :(

  • @nodinitiative *stares blankly*

  • @berserker276 Tyrion Lannister vs the woodsmen

  • @nodinitiative *continues staring blankly*

  • @berserker276 lol

  • @nodinitiative *stares blankly, jumps out window*

  • @nodinitiative I got the Game of Thrones reference, I was about to call you out but saw you called yourself out shortly after lol. I just started reading Songs of Ice and Fire as well as the series :)

  • @mickaneso yup and Season Two is coming bitches :)... Anyway, Gandalf forgot to mention, Gandalf: And oh Pippin, these freaks don't kill Hobbits, they make you their sex slaves Pippin: Ummm.... G: I'll be killed n reincarned as Magnamus P: What? G: Trust me, you'll enjoy it (Army of Rohan arrives) G: Nevermind, there be bitches who will kill and die for us outside now :) P: What about accepting death? G: I ain't no Emo freak Dawg
  • @berserker276 Your body uses pain as a defense. If you go through too much pain you black out and go into a peaceful state while you die. It's not like on tv how they're choking up blood and gasping for breath. That only happens to the people who survive being wounded.

  • those tears feel freely, no shame

  • Gandalf is the man.... so much wisdom. Have faith human race all hope is not lost!

  • The Hobbit 2012!!! So excited

  • ATTENTION:

PLEASE STOP ARGUING ABOUT THE EXISTENCE OF GOD! IT IS RATHER PATHETIC TO DO THIS IN A LORD OF THE RINGS VIDEO! I AM WRITING THIS IN CAPS IN HOPES THAT YOU READ THIS! THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME!

  • Beautiful words, though I'm an atheist.

  • @tontsa911

Who says belief in an afterlife is the same as belief in a deity?

  • @MetaphysicalShadows They usually go "hand in hand". Not always, but usually. I don't believe in afterlife. Or, I'm "agnostic" about afterlife :) Same thing with God. It's "negative atheism", as there is no proof.

  • I so hope its true

  • @Cervezasi Pretty close. White gates, on gold walls set with precious stones. He got the rest correct though, I believe. :)

  • I..I.. I'm not afraid anymore! One should welcome death open-armed like a common prostitute her clients.

  • @v00dochild I can't find a single part of that sentence that's true.

  • in soviet russia, 240p is HD

  • i can't undestand a word gandalf says

  • I swear, if any of my kids ever ask me what death is like, I will use this speach to explain it. It is perfect!!!

  • Is it Mary or Pippin that Gandulf speaks to? I always get them mixed up

  • In the middle earth universe there is an afterlife

  • my mom is terminally ill and only has a few months left. I found out a week ago and she told me this speech. I just finally realized where she got it from...

  • @Deliverater it is amazing what the creation of others can teach us of our own lives,i too have been in your position,it is very hard, the important thing is to cherish the moments, good luck friend.

  • @Deliverater I'm so very sorry. My grandma died back in November, and this speech gave me such hope for her..i hope that it comforts you,as well.Peace be with you,and wih your mom and family.

  • So, on a brighter note, I'm an Elf. I am from Middle Earth, and Gandalf is totally real. No lie. =D

  • @Arwen79 Sure. And I'm an orc.

  • @Ilovecaptainjack224 And I am a hobbit, who very much enjoys drinking ale and smoking some of the finest long-bottom leaf in all of the south farthing :P

  • @Breakfastfan4life Nice reply, I'll admit! But your love of the halfling's leaf has clearly slowed your mind...

  • Hmm interesting. Never met one here, before....

  • 240p we meet once more!

  • @PornflakesNL 240p can not destroy something this beautiful

  • This actually made me feel a bit more relaxed and accepting of death. Not that I am dying or anything, but I thought, what if you see death as a great adventure in some fantasy land? When my time comes, I'm gonna remind myself of this and greet death, calmly. To Sovngarde we go!

  • @MrQueenie I wouldn't want to go to Sovngarde tbh.

  • @szeretemalillat into the west is the name on the song

  • what is this soundtrack? (title)

  • @szeretemalillat the grey havens

  • And that is not Middle Earth's version of heaven it's the Undying Lands

  • I dont know why the asshole who did the casting for Harry Potter didnt cast this guy to play Dumbledore after Richard Harris died

  • @joeymerlino1967 Ian Mckellan was busy being magneto in x-men to do harry potter.

  • @joeymerlino1967 I think he actually turned the role of Dumbledore down because he was already Gandalf. And I agree with his decision on that, really.

  • @04whim he said he couldn't play two important rolls that were so similar so thats why he turned it down

  • Funny thing is, that isn't even death in Tolkien's world. In the books that was Tolkien uses to describe Valinor out beyond the West shores, but once they get there they will just die, peacefully, to be sure, but they will go "where the Elves no not whither," and that doesn't include white shores or a swift sun rise.

  • @HistoryLubber True, but a movie adaption like this needs to also convey the essence of the stories, and that would be impossible by directly translating them onto screen. Instead, by taking direct quotes from the novels, and - yes - changing things, they are able to convey much more of the essence despite the differences. Of course, this doesn't stand for all aspects of the adaption, but I think this is a good example of it.

  • Gandalf > Dumbledore

  • Ian Mckellan better win an Academy Award for the Hobbit or I'm gonna be pissed, he got robbed in Fellowship

  • @waterbender17 Well, there's probably a biblical allegory here that Tolkien intended. Valinor been heaven and the elves been a sort righteous people.

  • @waterbender17 Gandalf was an entity sent to middle earth to keep a lookout on the people, to be a protector, so when gandalf dies he knows where hes going, but pippin on the other hand doesnt.

  • @waterbender17 This is just wrong. This book and all of Tolkien's books about Middle Earth are greatly based upon events of the Bible. If you read the Silmarillion it is explained clearly and definitively. And if you'd actually take the time to read the actual literature you would know he's talking about Middle Earth's version of heaven.

  • Gandalf: "...and then you see it..."

    Pippin: "What, Gandalf? See what?"

    Gandalf: :White whores..."

  • Bunch of mofos writing comments ruined this video

  • brilliant acting, made me tear up.

  • I sit here in tears watching the wisdom of a genius. I look down and read the comments, and people are arguing about god. Pathetic.

  • @Jagsta2733 Tolkien was just a far better theologian than C S Lewis.

  • @Jagsta2733 um........Tolkien created Gandalf to be an allegory to Jesus.........and Gandalf just described heaven........so...........I'm just gonna put that out there.

  • @GhawalysRage

no! would you people stop talking bullshit! tolkien hated allegories with all his heart! and no! he is not describing any goddamn heaven, he is just remembering his old days in Aman when he didn't take on the form of an old man! read the fuckin' book!

  • @WoollyMammoth16 Um, hate to break it to you...but Gandalf is NOT "remembering his old days." This was the description Tolkien uses to describe Frodo's departure to the Grey Havens. Peter Jackson just felt it appropriate for Gandalf to speaks as words of comfort instead. Read the book...and watch the movie extras.

  • @WoollyMammoth16 It MAY be true what I'm saying? It IS true. It doesn't matter where Gandalf is from, the description is not his, period. It was simply something Peter Jackson had him say for the MOVIE. So adding any nostalgia to it is of your own doing based on what you saw in the film, not Tolkien's intention. Don't confuse the two. And don't curse others out when you aren't getting the facts straight yourself.

  • @mking624 Indeed you are correct, but Frodo's departure to the Grey Havens was like death, just peacefully, without dyeing. And you are also correct about Gandalf not remembering his "Old Days". But, you're being a bit harsh, some people only watch the movies.

  • @jokerman148 I was being a bit harsh because WoollyMammoth16 decided to curse someone out, yelling at someone to "read the book" when his own rude reply was completely incorrect. I have no problem helping people get the right information in a civil way. But there was no excuse for WoollyMammoth16 to treat anyone that way when his own supposed knowledge of the books was not even right...as this was someone who claimed to have that knowledge of the books.

  • @mking624 Ah, I understand now. Sorry for accusing you of something you did not do. You seem to know a lot about the series and movies alike.

  • @jokerman148 No worries. :)

  • What an utterly depressing belief atheists hold, in your eyes there are no white shores. Merely blackness.

  • @angelmarine1292 said: "What an utterly depressing belief atheists hold, in your eyes there are no white shores. Merely blackness."

Without expectations one cannot be disappointed. Plus I live a happy life, not because I think of what happens when I die, but because I focus on my life.

So I'd say for atheïsts the quality of life is actually better.

Although, I must confess I am an agnostic, but I think your comment could be directed towards me aswell.

  • @Zalzyn Hardly, I can tolerate agnostics because you do not have the audacity to claim that you know how the Universe was created, or by that rationale, that one possibility is immediately invalid.

So long as you do not make such a pridefully unscientific claim like atheists do, your agnosticism does not bother me in the least.

  • @angelmarine1292 To claim that I do not have audacity is a bit obtuse in my opinion. I'm an agnostic not because I fear to make the wrong decission. I am an agnostic, because I think it is foolish to claim to know what cannot be perceived, plus the responsibility for your actions is very often not perceived as yours when religious.

    A few examples:

-Something goes wrong it's: "Gods will".

-Something goes right: "God gave me the strength, but I did it".

-An excuse to leave things the way they are

  • @Zalzyn "God wanted it this way."

-An excuse for certain types of bad behavior: "God made me this way, changing would defy God's will."

-An excuse for a bad personality: "God made us all perfect, our 'bads' may turn out to do or be something good for a greater plan."

Also, with organized religion it is often the case that you follow certain church standards and do stuff that they require of you.

It also distracts you from important stuff and makes you an easy slave to bankers. And last

  • @Zalzyn but not least, it keeps you from doing research about other possibilities or even considering your own beliefs to be wrong or for others to be right.

That is my look on religion and there's much more, but I'd rather refrain from being rude.

It is not ment to offend you, nor do I believe that what I have said is the TRUTH or ALWAYS the case.

I just tried to mimic the style of Socrates where he pulls up arguments from a completely different direction, just to explore new ways of thinkin

  • @angelmarine1292 Atheists doesn't believe in god or religion. Being an atheist myself, i believe theres something more, after this life. I just don't believe what the church says.

  • @Mursilia You are an agnostic then really. Many supposed atheists, such as yourself, really are just slightly confused agnostics. As such, I can tolerate you.

  • @Mursilia then you believe in NOTHING and NOTHING is what you will become.

  • I love this scene. Just so beautifully worded. Makes me tear up every time :')

  • @ElvenLegolasUK middle earth is real, we killed all the orcs, the elves went back home and no one knows where the dwarves are, its the age of man silly!

  • This is just one of the countless scenes that solidify my opinion on Sir Ian McKellen being fucking JESUS.

  • can we all promise to work together, hold no grudges, for the good of mankind, for the strength of our kids to come and the future, and to be the gardians of this land, so that all time may see the beauty of this planet and its cultures and its people. no matter what happens even if it will be all destroyed there is a memory and everyone knows memories are powerful

  • i love this :)

    thank you, Gandalf :')

  • This is one of my favourite scenes from the entire trilogy - It always makes me shiver! How I wish I would see that for myself one day :)

  • when i watch this i forgive ian mckellen's urge to destroy humanity in x-men

    great actor

    great scene

    great movie

  • I wish this happens when u die :D

  • OK its official. I WANT TO DIE!

  • "And then you see it."

    "What Gandalf? See what?"

"White shores *music roles in* and a far green country, under a swift sunrise."

I think I wasn't the only one who got massive chills and then sighed like Gandalf on that part.

  • ah 240p..............We meet again.

  • Gandalf would own that Dumbledore and that Voldemort guy at the same time... In a fight or in wisdom :D

  • no wonder there's a LOTR religion

  • 240p We meet again.

  • when i was growing up as a kid for some reason i had a huge fear of death and it gave me nightmares at night but i remember being in my dads house and watchin this for the first time and ballin my eyes out. Iv slept soundly every night since :)

  • Into the West is the song I want to play right after I die.

  • This makes me not fear death

  • This is why I want to get into the industry of acting. Not to be famous or show the media every aspect of my existence, but to bring to life amazing roles such as these, and to inspire.

  • There. thats what the first douchebag who started the "god" bullshit should have said instead. The world would be so much better...

  • Most touching scene of the movie!

  • Even the Troll stopped hammering the gates so he could listen to Gandalf

  • @wastedlittleDJ117

    Good one

  • @wastedlittleDJ117 haha brilliant

  • @wastedlittleDJ117 A very polite troll to be sure. Then he was like, "Oh! Is he done? Okay, back to hammering..."

  • Gandalf...probably the greatest Character thought up in human imagination, and performed impeccably by Sir Ian.

  • I don't cry at this scene, well because I'm not a flamer, but its a good scene. Its amazing how they fit so many violent and warm scenes into these movies.

  • This is one of the best movies i've ever seen. i may sound gay but this just touches my heart bro :0. I can't wait to die :D

  • Wait was this in the book? =|

  • This is the most beautiful piece of film ever made.

  • I cried. Yes I'm a 16-year-old guy and I cried. All three movies are so beautiful and they will be forever my favorite movies of all time.

  • @JemDerp herehere.

  • @JemDerp

same lol well same iam 20 but still

  • @JemDerp Im 18 and have watched every part 20+ times and I still cry every time at the Gray Heavens scene :D

  • @LongviewGD182 I know; it never gets old.

  • If you cry during moments of happiness or sadness that makes you human, it makes you a good person as well. Never loose that or let anyone tell you different, crying is not a weakness, fear is a weakness, fear of being judged or fear of being alone or fear of anything. Most bad things that happen are because people are just afraid, they are afraid of something or someone so they do things they wouldn't normally do, illogical things, the only logical things is love and peace, not fear and hate.

  • @JemDerp A real man can admit when he is wrong, be honest, and can cry and not feel ashamed, because he is secure with himself and who he is.

I wish more people were like you and could see the true beauty in life and what the LOTR are trying to really prove, that no matter what the odds are we all have inner strength and if we just have hope and we never give up, we can accomplish anything, and that no matter what happens in this physical world no one can destroy the soul unless we let them.

  • @JemDerp NERD ALEEERT!!!

  • @JemDerp yes i did as well, same as you :P

  • This is definately one of my favourite parts of the films.

  • and this is why the lord of the rings is still the best :) great acting, deep emotions, and a message behind it

  • thumbs up this is one of the best parts throughout all three movies!

  • This shit just makes me feel so hopeful.

    It ain't so bad.

  • This is why being older and watching this movie is awesome, because when I was a kid I wouldn't even like listen to the words he was saying in these quiet parts, i would just want action. Lol

  • I tried to hold the tears back, I failed miserably. There's just something about Gandalf's speeches that always gets me emotional. His speeches, this one in particular, are about depressing subjects, yet he makes you look on the bright side. I guess it's what you would call a happy sad. Also the background music could not be more fitting.

  • This makes me tear up; it's just beautiful.

  • To whoever reads this.

What Gandalf shares in his wisdom is not far from truth, it's a good metaphor. Have no fear. It may be surprising to some, but what happens has very little to do with religion, it's mostly irrelevant. No matter your belief, it will be all right. Just a useful advice: beliefs forms and shapes your experience. Rid yourself of all belief and your experience will reflect that in terms of accuracy and clarity. My fellow humans, let us do our best, and achieve our potential!

  • @BFDK "Rid yourself of all belief and your experience will reflect that in terms of accuracy and clarity."

I don't get what you mean by that

  • @JohnLeeMD he means your beliefs shape the accuracy and clarity of your experience.
