I think the tune must go back to at least 1890, since Lowe Stokes, born 1898, heard both his father and Joe Lee playing it; so it had spread around a bit, to at least two fiddlers by 1908 or so when Stokes might have been listening as a kid. Some of these tunes go back to England, maybe 1800 or earlier; but people do make up new tunes.
you sound great!!! you got all the notes in there, thats not an easy tune either. try slowing it down a tick and putting in some more soul. keep posting!
Tear that fiddle up girl! I love listening to old-time fiddle tunes like this. Now just need somebody to do some old-time clog/buck & or flat-footin to it. AWESOME, AWESOME job.
My bad, looks like the Old-Time Fiddlers Hall Of Fame website has a typo, and Jarrell actually died in '85. That's what I get for being a know-it-all. Sorry.
@buckleup, Tommy passed away in '85. Heck, he was honored at the Smithsonian in '82. That's when the interview took place, Fiddler Magazine just published it in '95.
It would sound a little better if she played the B on the E string a little higher.

Remember to put some feeling in it. You have the speed thing down and the dexterity now all you need is some soul.

Your fiddling is awesome, but you should probably change the description on this clip because Tommy Jarrell died in 1975.

I love playing this song on the banjo. Dean Johnson from Lamar, MO used to play this one on the fiddle and I'd take a break on it.
