Why doesn't Michigan bring back the Caribou to Isla Royale? They are the Iniginous species not the Moose. The Caribou have lived with the Grey Wolf for thousands of yrs . They could heal the deformed Wolves and balance Nature in this Tiny Ecosystem. Caribou have been extinct to long , Moose are destroying the vegitation. Caribou could heal Isle Royale.
The wolves on Isle Royale are from a single pack that crossed over when the ice froze on Superior (I think it was the winter of '49 - '50). After that the population would rise and fall from as few as twelve to fifty or more divided between two to four packs because of the moose population already there. Due to the isolation they have become tainted from years of inbreeding and the backbones of each succesive generation are becoming weaker, along with other problems.
As the moose consume more of the vegetation it is the cycle of feast and famine. In the years where there is plenty the population will rise, in the years where there is little it will drop. This would happen with the caribou even if there were no moose or wolves. They also have the battle with the winter tick which they are losing. Plus the feds aren't about to interrupt the ongoing study on the island.
@neeko787 - You are such a "Ding Bat" ! The wolves are showing signs of inbreeding , over 60% have bone deformaties . There is no future for these wolves !
