Talk about custom ordering cars. My Dad was on the cheap side, he ordered a '67 4dr. Impala. Did get the white running lights but went cheap after that, 283 eng. 2sp Auto, No PS, No PB, No Tires. He got the tires from his work cheaper than chev.
These cars were huge by todays standards BUT the weight issue is another matter. Cars have been gaining serious weight over the years w/all the options and safety features yet they get far better gas mileage due to far more efficient engines that are smaller, more powerful and better on gas. A Cadillac today almost weighs the same as this car but it is smaller and gets good gas mileage.
@auaiao9 My '69 Camaro SS/RS had the headlight washers and I don't know if this feature was standard or optional w/the hide-a-way headlight option. In those days almost everything was an option and why you could actually customize your car before it was built! That is what made the US car companies the big money.
@lasuvidaboy It seems like people ordered their cars the way they wanted them instead of ordering "packages". Didn't Chrysler's headlight washers also have motorized brushes that swiped the lights clean after they were sprayed? Maybe it was just on the Imperial. ?
@auaiao9 I've read that the 1970 or '71 Imperials came w/a washer AND small wiper that worked when the regular windshield wipers were in operation. The reason for these washers and wipers were the headlights may get dirty when the headlight doors are closed as well as not being cleaned when a car is washed. The washer system was a safeguard to ensure clean headlights.
the 1965-1970 Chevrolet Caprice was assembled in Atlanta, Georgia, United States Arlington, Texas, United States Doraville, Georgia, United States Flint, Michigan, United States Framingham, Massachusetts, United States Janesville, Wisconsin, United States Lordstown, Ohio, United States Los Angeles, California, United States Norwood, Ohio, United States South Gate, California, United States St. Louis, Missouri, United States Tarrytown, New York, United States Wilmington, Delaware, United States
the mid to late 60s were chevy's prime! i dont mind today's veichles but its all about the 60s before there was any such thing as this thing called "internet"
That rear wheel Snow melter turned out being a peice of junk. GM only put it on like 1000 cars before they got rid of it. All it was is a plastic bottle in the inner wheel well that squirted fluid onto the rear tires.
@catalina31768 That is your grandma in the 69 Chevy commercial? My grandma had a 69 Impala with the 350 Love that Caprice.....69 was one of GMs best year for car's.
@jferg7159 For 1969, the power door lock switch was the lock. So when you pushed down the lock all the locks opened, and when you lifted the lock up it unlocked all the doors. It didn't have a separate lock button on the door like other GM cars.
@jferg7159 Notice, the maunel outside mirror and no tilt or cruise... I guess that was a special order car. With the Auto A/C and Power windows you would think it would have tilt and cruise. That is one pretty car. I miss the days when GM made cars like that. NO airbags , but steel beams in the door and steel surrounding you. Energy aborbing Steering column, and padded inside. Safe for then in 69.
All those options added to big profits for GM in those days. Cars like this Caprice could really be customized at the factory to your personal taste from the options list you filled out if you chose to custom order your car. Today's cars come in only a few variations w/limited options and color choices compared to those days.
I'm surprised that the Caprice offered these features so many years ago. Even though it was the top of the line Chevrolet, it was still a Chevrolet, not a Buick.
@327caprice GO COMFORTRON!!!!! A BEAUTIFUL CAPRICE! Even the motor's had names... Turbo Thrift , 6 Turbo-Fire...327.350 Turbo-Jet 396, 454. Those were the days for the American cars. OLD's Rocket 350, 455.
@centurion1479 - That's why, if you had an Olds, you stepped down to the Cutlass Supreme, or if you wanted limousine room without a bloated exterior, you went to the Vista Cruiser, which had the tinted skylight over the 2nd seat, and could seat 8 comfortably with the available forward-facing 3rd seat. However, even though the Vista was an Olds, this Chevy had a lot more available options than you could get in the Olds wagons.
I agree, I would love to find one just like that one. 1969 was one of the best years in all brands. My dad had a 69 Bonneville, I was nine, and I went car looking with him. He looked at the Chevrolet, and a couple of other brands. My dad was a salesman and he was so inpressed with the Pontiac salesman I think that is why he bought the Pontiac. I don't recall but dad said he started at the trunk and went though the whole showing him the car. It was a 4 door hardtop, A/C tilt cruise power locks FM
I have the Lit on the Full size 1969 Chevrolet, it talks about it in the options page but does not say much about it. I am going to find a 69 owners manuel and I bet it lays it out in that. If I find one and understand it better, I will e-mail you. Everybrand had a name for their A/C. Four season was Chevy's reg A/C. Buick called their Climate control, and their Auto they called it Auto Climate control. Pontiac called the reg a/c Custom a/c, and the auto was called set and forget...
@jpeter741 It was a short lived option on Chevrolets. My heavily optioned '69 Camaro SS/RS convertible came with it. It was an anti-freeze type of liquid that was sprayed on the rear tires w/a push of a button.
Liquid Tire Chain........Incredible! The car actually squirts this crap down on the tire to get you unstuck. Amazing.
