  • how to make an capture point

  • Great video but the scale/spawn person is alot smaller than an in game tf2 player.

  • Shouldn't stairs be made with a grid size of 8?

  • could you please make a tutorial of how to play your map cause im havin problems cause this pops up ever time i tr to run it map super epic map

    CModelLoader::Map_IsValid: No such map 'maps/super.bsp'

map load failed: super not found or invalid

  • could you please make a tutorial of how to play your map cause im havin problems

  • Phate, you're the most helpfull person Ive ever seen, or heard in this case

  • Idea: MINECRAFT MAP IN TF2!!!

  • @mylife101studios they have it. it's a payload map

  • @mylife101studios

They've had one for a year now. It's kinda fun, I guess.

  • Hey man. . . when i try to use Hammer and make a floor and tryes to add texture it stays black. . . help plz!!

  • hey whats the pogram?

  • @slayingmaster source SDK

  • what is hammer?

  • how to save map to use it in game? -.-

  • @Dreamspenser Press F9 - it will compile the map. Then run TF2 and Create a Server and select the map from the list.

  • @mattdawg420 i have sdk source and tf2 and when i open the hammer editor(sdk) i only have one screen wich i have to change it in ,top,fromt,3d ,etc ,i click on the view button to open 4 different wondows but it wont work ,i have uni and re-istall it again but the problem remains what should i do??

  • @mattdawg420 how do you make a server??

  • I quite honestly don't like to make them blocks after blocks, I use one block and the clipping tool :). It's a little bit slower when you also have to add the Clip but I think it works well. Another thing though, The heads bob up and down on stairs like that don't they? Or is that just Half life 2?

  • @darkknightstudios88 That is not a bad method as well, and actually would make the map file smaller. But this series was mostly a basic of how to do this sort of thing. From people that have new used anything like this sort of concept. That being said, I am reworking all of the videos in HD on a DVD that will cover a bit more. And you mean like does your character bounce a bit up and down the stairs? I think they do, TF2 is built on the HL2 engine.

  • @mattdawg420 Yeah i like that the stairs I do have a faster rendering time compared to block stairs. That's cool can't wait for that to come out Sell it XD. Yeah I knew that HL2 and TF2 were both built on the source engine, but I thought that there were slight modifications made to it for that particular game. It could've been I'm not quite sure.

  • @darkknightstudios88 Valve recommends using a player clip ramp on top of the stairs to smooth it out.

  • @kevinlech Yeah use clip walls when were you can.

  • simple yet effective. thanks dude

  • @kevinlech That is the way I like things :)

  • do you know how to run your map when you are finished with it

  • @speeder99123 Nope, you can't actually run the maps when you make them.

Just keeding... you press F9 to compile the map, then you run TF2 and select Create Server and select your map from the list.

If it does not work, then you might have a fatal flaw in your map such as respawns that touch the ground or your map is not totally enclosed. Other than those two things, it should work regardless.

  • DO you mind if I upload a video in response to yours on how to make a respawn room inacessable to enemies?

  • @AxelsDawn well its probably fine for now, but eventually i am going to release the HD version of this that covers everything. At that point, the publisher has requested that I pull all my youtube content since at that point they will own the copyright to the material. So it should be fine until I get the last video complete.

  • @mattdawg420 I'll hold off on that. When can we expect you to release that?

  • @AxelsDawn well I need to get with the publisher to see when they want to do it, will be a few weeks/ couple months but could be sooner. If you subscribe I can assure you I will post something about it when the video launches.

  • Ya I found it thx

  • @FuzzySnuckums no prob, happy mapping!

  • i think my wireframe is off...because a cant get the same little size boxes that you can

  • @FuzzySnuckums sounds like your grid size may be set larger. I can't think off the top of my head where it is located, but that is what decides the size of the blocks you put into the map. Increase or decrease the grid size (its on there I promise).

  • Please help ASAP D: i cant find out how to add to them to TF2 T^T

  • Press F9 while in Hammer to Compile the map. Then run TF2, and Create a Server and select the name of the map from the list. If it does not work, rewatch video one, as you might have a flaw that makes the make not work.

  • do you have anything with like geometric rocks and stuff like in Sawmill?

  • I have yet to find a source material to work with to figure that one out as well. I can only assume that it is multiple shapes on top of themselves to create the look.

  • Ah. Too bad you stopped. I was getting into it! I didn't download anything, I only watched so that I might do it later.

  • Have not really stopped, just have to find a place to learn the material to then make a video about it. But in the next few months the DVD should be released, I am planning things out now.

  • You can actually go to Entitys then change to Hl2 prefabs and at the bottom of the dropdown it has simple stairs

    Much faster :D

  • Hehe yes, any tools you can use pre-fab stuff is nice :) Just wanted the viewers to get the feel of dropping objects and making their own things, but yes, that is a great tip :)

  • hey do you know where i can find a tutorial for making one of those like "CP_Bathroom" or bedroom where everything is big?

  • I have not seen that one, but it sounds easy enough. Just build things larger to scale than in real life. One thing to be sure to do is to use a player respawn to judge heights as if you don't want someone to jump the step can't be higher than the kneecap.

  • OK and is there a tutorial of how to Add (Not Make) Doors..And How Do I Add My Map To Tf2? When Im Done

  • 5 stars for the star wipe >:3

  • LOL :) By far the most under-used yet awesome wipe out there today :)

  • same here >:]

  • hey man when will there come more i realy like it :D!!!

  • There is an official DVD with extended content and remakes of all the videos in HD and including how to do Capture the control points. I am still working on finishing it, I have unfortunately had some life situations come up that have hindered its completion, however I am still working on it.

  • ok thx man you rock!

GL with your life and making the movie!

    cya

  • Thanks man, if things go well I will have something out next month, but we will see. The publisher has been busy too so they may not be ready even if I was ;/

  • how do u convert the hammer file map into a tf2 map to play on

  • Press F9 in Hammer

  • Thanks For the Tutorial man! great 5 stars!

  • Thanks man, I UB3R appreciate the 5 stars :) Also, if you can subscribe too :) Both help me very much!

  • one thing to note, the tf2 models are bigger than the green model, not by much but keep that in mind

  • you could also make a large block and use crop tool

  • Can u plz make a tut on how to make map-teleports so when u go into/step on it you will be teleported to another part of the map. that would be great! <3 yah ;)

  • You are great at tutorials and I have subscribed thanks so much for the easy explanations

  • why don't you make Team Fortress 2 map tutorails anymore? I loved them and they were the only tutorails on the web that halped me

  • Because I was picked up by a publisher and need to finish making the official DVD. I would have had them released by now but dealing with more personal issues than most people would survive at the moment, but I am very close to getting it done.

  • how do u test a map?

  • F9 to compile the map then run TF2 and create a server and select the map from the list.

  • Hey I dont know why, but in my map the stair is about the size of a whole guy, and since its the size of one whole box, I cant make it smaller without making it completely flat.... help please?

  • Adjust the grid size at the top. If you change it to a lower size with the MINUS on it I believe it will make the box smaller so you can make it knee height instead of man height.

  • Thanks a million Mattdawg. your videos are great, I subscribed, so keep em coming! =D

  • I'm trying to make a map with a small hill in the centre, and a spherical hole leading down. I can easily do this without the hill, but when I try with the hill, the create displacement button destroys the hill, making holes in the floor or randomly disfiguring the hill.

I understand it's a bit complicated and hard to follow, but do you have any idea on how I'd get it to work.

  • You will just have to play with the different commands. A mixture of hollow and carve might do the trick.

  • What sort of thing will be featured in the first DVD?

I really need a user-friendly guide to swimmable water and payload maps but I can't find any, hope you cover them, if not on the first DVD, but a following one!

  • Actually you hit it on the head. The second DVD is going to cover Payload and advanced things like water. I did figure payload out (oh man its a doozy as far as the programming goes) but I haven't found a good water reference to work with to get that going. However, I will find something when I start working on the disc. I just need to finish two more chapters and then the Cap the Control points video for the last one on the first disc. But as soon as that is done, I will start on #2.

  • hey how do you do EP2 rain ? (PM me)

  • I don't have EP2 yet, so dunno.

  • it's fate not phat :))

  • LOL yeah when I am playing online with a headset people are like hey FAT can you repair that turret or what not, lol. I usually ignore it for a bit but then have to be like oh btw its FATE not FAT at some point, lol. But I answer to it in game as I know they are just 133T$P34K impaired so no worries =D

  • MOAR!!!

  • how would u make the whole in the ground to make stairs go down?

  • you make the floor into pieces instead of one big chunk. You then leave a hole so you can drop down. Usually this type of design is retrospective in the sense that I do that alot. I design a level and then have to go and redo alot of it make interesting things like that work.

  • Wouldn't it be possible to just carve a hole in the ground and create the stairs through that hole?

Also, how do you make objects that are angled?

Thank you for all of your help, I never would've been able to understand any of this if it wasn't for you.

  • You could but if you punch a hole in the floor you need a whole enclosed room down there so the blackness doesn't seep inside. And you can click on an object on the grid and cycle through the modes, and one of them is rotate I believe, and you can use that to rotate it. Also I think there is a control key you can use to pull up a direction menu to rotate with like control m or control t, I don't recall which atm.. I'm sure someone will correct me, heh.

  • fuckin star whipe, lol

    nice tut.

  • =D haha a little nod to Simpsons and Family Guy with that one.

  • Lol, Aqua Teen movie.

  • oh yes .. they went there too :)

  • Haha, star wipe and "In the air tonight" playing.

  • Hey matt,

    your tutorials r fkin awesome.

But it wont let me like play the map in tf2,

it just goes back to menu screen, u mentioned above a flaw in the map, how do i find this flaw?

  • Go to Map -> Check for Problems. (Alt+P) Should tell you if anything is wrong.

  • how can i insert it cause i sent to my docs and put it into TFmaps foplder i cant find

  • If you start TF2 you should be able to "create a server" Then select the map from the drop down list. If it is not there, or does not work, you have a flaw in your map.

  • do you know of any web sites that wold give the distances for scouts jumps and rocket jumps etc

  • there is a wiki out there that gives that info but I don't have the link handy.

  • i cant find anywhere how to make a control point to TF2. like defence maps.. anyone got a link or something ?

  • There is some Wiki out that that covers it somewhere. I am adding a cap the control points to the first DVD when it comes out. I am making progress redoing the videos, it is just taking me time as I am working to make them top notch. But yeah, I will have the video out in a few weeks, and it will explain how to do it.

  • how much will the dvd cost?

  • how do u copy it?

  • Lets say i Gmoded a map. how can i save it as a seperate map and play it in Tf2

  • a question. when i was doing the blue suitcase i right clicked the trigger spot after surrounding the intel. all it gave me was a grouping selection. the red suitcase worked why wont the blue?

  • I am not sure what you did, but perhaps you clicked one of the icons at the top that toggled the selection mode from selecting an item into making a drag around box like how windows works. I would save, close, and reopen the program and see if that works. And of course, you might be able to just start over or copy the other brief case and paste a new copy and then just modify the settings.

  • lol i made a simple map similar to this one then when i compiled it it opened tf2 and the "server" fine. but after i spawned under the map...

  • Did you put respawn areas in that were inside the box? Make sure you have 16 or so for each team. Also make sure that they are NOT touching the floor. Move them ONE unit up so the respawns hover just over the floor. See if that helps.

  • can you make a tutorial on how to make payload maps(pushing the cart)

  • I do plan on it. But unfortunately, Steam hasn't released any information as to the requirements to allow for that to work. But as soon as there is a text based tutorial on how to do it, I will make a tutorial. So short answer is, sorry too new for anyone to know about yet.

  • Could you please help me. This is my first few days of using hammer. How do I play my map? I have clicked Run map but once im in TF2 and I click start game, nothing happens. Please help

  • Make sure TF2 isn't running while you compile the map to make sure it loads properly. Also try to make a simple room first, with no leaks to the outside. Nothing can touch the blackness. Even outside maps are enclosed. Make sure you have spawn points.

  • Another thing is that if your map has any spaces in the name it won't work. You have to use underscores.

  • You usually do NOT want to have TF2 running when you compile the map. Make sure it is closed, as when it is done compiling (F9) , it will load TF2 and then the map. Also, there is a check box on the compile screen that toggles if the game will run when its done compiling. Obviously in this case you want to make sure it is set to run the game.

  • Thanks for your videos -- they're exactly the thing I need to get started. Very easy to follow and you don't go too fast (or too slow). Hope to see more!

  • Love these tutorials! Can you make one about adding lighting to your map?

  • Actually, I've got my lighting sorted. Thanks to your videos, I've almost finished my map! I'm just having trouble with adding ater. Could you do a tutorial on that?

  • Light is hard to do. Also, if you add light to your map, the compile time will be much much larger.

  • On water? Yeah I want to do one on that as well, I just haven't research it just yet. But I will have that in the not so distant future after I get the lighting, texture, and control point videos out.

  • Sure thing! Lighting is another subject I plan to cover. It will be coming up soon.

  • I was going to say how these aren't optimized, but from the looks of the tutorial, this isn't a concern right now. You're out to help people just use the Hammer app at the moment.

  • Indeed. Although these sorts of comments are highly welcomed and encouraged, as everyone should be aware of everything that is possible for making these maps. Any suggestions, questions, or comments are appreciated. If you like, you can post a couple things about optimizing in the comments, or just send me a message and give me a couple ideas of how I should steer the video, and perhaps tips I might not know, and I will pop out a video :)

  • Maybe a future tutorial could cover all of this in one big video, you could tell the new user how to compile, and reduce compile time by optimization.

  • when are u giong to show us how to make tf2 capture bases

  • I assume by capture bases, you mean control points. And as soon as I find a good resource that explains it well enough for me, I will do it. Sadly they are way more complex than just making a brush item, as you have to program them. And there is a certain order of operations you have to do for the cap flow, such as you must get A before B, but when you get B, you can get C and so forth. If anyone knows anywhere I can find this info in an understandable format, mail me please!

  • One thing you should do a tutorial on is how to create barriers so players can't clip onto objects (this would help make moving up stairs smoother), and prevent demomen from sticky bomb jumping to certain areas. Also how to make team specific barriers so players can't spawn camp at the other teams spawnroom would be good to learn.

  • Yeah I don't think I covered it in the respawn room tutorial so I will go over how to make barriers to keep the other team from getting into your respawn areas and such.

  • God I love these videos, I'll give you credit when I make my map (might be a while)

  • Hey thanks man that help alot
