One evening in Georgetown/DC club hopping early 1970's walked into Trammps Club on Wisconsin Ave, NW and heard this infectious song. On the first note couples descended to the dance floor - black, white, latin, asian, middle eastern - beautiful sight to see! I learned latin dance, the hustle, and hand dancing off this song by this band! I'll never forget this song, this band and the night I learned to latin dance!
Beija! Bellisima! What a facinating rhythm this was. Can't forget the funky forties theme of their musical style. And Cory, what can I say? Love always! She's my sweetheart chanteuse. Edith Piaf, Streisand, Karen Carpenter, Diana Ross, Natalie Cole, Chanka Khan, La Lupe, for get about it! Corey is the one, two, and three!
BRING THEM BACK!!!!! BRING THEM BACK......PLEASE!?!!!!
Two hard to find combinations of musical talent: Their Stage Presence and Their Music!!! Let the young group of people today hear this band....CLASSIC and FUNK!
They had another good song called "Mr. Love" that was on their 2nd lp "Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band Meets King Pennett. I'm sure that lp has never been reissued. I just searched for Mr. Love on Youtube and it's not here. Maybe Coati will post it
I was in high school at the time and it seemed like EVERYONE had the album. Everything about them was FUN. I wanted to be in the group because they just looked like they were having so much fun. LOL! Besides Cherchez Le Femme,, "Sunshower" was the other song all of us loved. Moreso than "I'll Play The Fool." I Loved them. I think I went wore out 2 copies of the lp. Thank God for cds. LOL!
@behdoc I was attending a private elementary school in San Francisco and though my upbringing was necessarily strict, I didn't get a chance to venture out to the dance places because, at the time, my generation weren't really hooking up like that. (Oh, the punk rock thing, forget it, nobody in my age group paid it any attention let alone understood it, basically it went over our heads) but, undeniably, disco music was the Big Thing. This group, I remember this song so very well.
@Khultan I meant, 'not necessareily strict' but I clearly remember hearing this song and mind you, alot of the music on the airwaves, I would never see the videos of these groups, so in many cases, this is really the first time I am ever seeing bands suchs as this excellent Bronx band. : )
There were no videos of groups back then. What you're now seeing on Youtbue of performances from back then are from live television performances.
Growing up in NYC in the 70s was interesting. The punk scene was in effect and even if you weren't into it we were all well aware of it. You couldn't really avoid coming into contact with it in NYC. So you had disco, punk, funk, r&b, and rock all coming together.
@behdoc Interesting, but the fact is, you're older than I am, my juvenile age group (non teenagers) never spoke of punk rock or funk, but it wouldn't be unusual for me to come into class with my uncle's BeeGees, The Sylvers album (hey, that was that time) or hit of the time. It's interesting, I didn't get to hear much funk music on a SF radio station. Honestly, I think you lucked out being able to go out into your environment. I would have loved growing up in NYC in the 60s and 70s.
@behdoc I've got a line of music (cocaine is helluva drug LOL) and I will eventually get to CD's song, cool and thank you. Should I note anything in particular or just groove to the music?
@behdoc It looks like I'll be getting the album or cd, I have a turntable that can upload music off vinyl : ) Well, I'm sure I'll be rewarded with however Pow Pow sounds : )
My Initial Vocal Mentor amongst many was indeed Mrs. Corey Day of Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band. Thank You to my Jazz Brother DJ "Rick Eckstein of WTCC Radio 90.7 FM in Springfield, MA. I've been in love with this album since I was 11 Yrs. old. Thanks Corey! Love Ya!

without the "disco era flourishes", you would have only a repeated semblance of the big band sound...they were savvy to incorporate the "en vogue" flares of disco to appeal to the masses at the time....
reason big band wnt out of style is because the massive orchestra became non cost effective....hell yeah they sounded great, but do YOU want to pay all those musicians? Disco being no stranger to Orchestration blended very nicely
i dont know about that erickliddell...i think big band went out of style simply because of changes in musical taste. as for the cost-effective factor, go to a concert nowadays...say.... ughh....ANYBODY & see if $25.00 even gets you in the parking lot ! I went to many Earth Wind & Fire concerts back in the day & needless to say there were a good 10 people on stage...tix price: $12.50 !!! LOL I agree with you that disco did blend quite nicely with orchestration. It was a great time!
Kid Creole and the Coconuts used to play during the summer at Penn's Landing's ampitheatre in the 80's and 90's. Cory Daye was along to do this one year.
This could have done without the disco-era flourishes, but I guess updating the sound was the idea at the time.
yeah..I was there, too..! Maybe 89, 90.... Incredible. Top three concert experiences of my life. Thank you, Andy..! (The original album is one of those that I can't imagine living without. Definitely, a desert island album.)

The whole Dr. Buzzard's cd is great. Every song is a different mood. Cory's "Pow Wow" was on her solo lp which I don't think has been reissued on cd.
