I have a 3 months old gsd and he pulls like crazy when i try to walk him. I dont have a long leash like that so what i do is when ever he pulls i stop right away and let him sit for 10 seconds and keep repeating. U think this method is good? Thanls for your vid
THX SOO MUCH!!! well actually i havnt tried this yet but i love how u dont have to pay to learn how to fricken train your dog. AND IT SEEMS SOO EASY!!!!! 1 question. will this work on puppies?
Thank you so much for these videos!!! I'm 14 years old and my mom got me a dog, but decides not to help me with ANYTHING. My family's idea of training dogs is hitting. And it makes me really sad when my dog makes a mistake and my sister seems to beat the crap out of him. These videos just gave me a huge smile(: THANKS!
when you apply tension the dog feel tens and not relaxed then he realises once the lead is un tence he relaxes and so do you so he knows that if he dosnt want to feel your tension he must walk by your side or behind you but not in front :)
I have a boxer/mastiff mix that is dog "aggressive". He doesn't want to eat the other dogs, but when he sees one, he tenses up, fur on his back stands up, he pulls and lunges at the dog. The situation escalates to the point that I'm almost unable to control him. Do you have any tips or thoughts on how to get rid of this behavior? Thanks in advance for any tips you can provide.
I recently rescued a 4 year old cocker spaniel that just PULLS when I try to take her for a walk. I tried this technique and it really works!! Within 30 minutes of going back and forth she started walking calmly. It really works, it just takes patience to actually walk back and forth over and over and over. Thanks so much!!! :) I will continue to do this exercise with her until she fully gets it.
I have had a 4 month old Australian Kelpie / Labrador cross for about 2 weeks. He is a very intelligent young dog and has already learned how to sit and stay. However, he pulls on the leash something terrible when walking. After watching this video today, I took him for a 30 minute walk and applied this method whenever he pulled. After about 20 minutes he was walking nicely on a loose leash! I'm amazed at his quick progress. After a few more walks I think he will be just great on the leash.
I tried that today with my puppy and it worked. Thank you so much! She's had lots of trainers and none has been able to teach her to walk on a leash. She can do every trick in the book but basic manners evade her lol.
I was curious what kind of collar you have on this dog. Is it a choke collar? I use a premier harness that attaches on the front so she has more of a challenge pulling forward. It worked with that harness. She flipped around but it didn't hurt her just let her know I'm there.
I recently adopted a 1-1/2 y.o. Boxer Beagle that is extremely smart. However, I have been having problems with him pulling while on walks. I saw this video and thought I would give this method a try. (Tried other methods that did not work.) Within 5 minutes my dog understood what was expected of him and we finished a nice walk with a very loose leash.

There is a simple method against pulling that is friendly and very well working. At the moment the dog puts tension on the line. stop walking , moving etc etc etc. also do not make contact or look at the dog. Just wait and wait until the dog himself steps back to take the tension of the line. At that moment start walking again and make complimenting sounds. The moment the dog walks too far and again there is tension on the line, stand still again etc etc etc. Works garanteed.
how do you stop a dog with way to much energy from pulling? got a german sheperd. he pulls all the time. even if im standing still hes strangling him self to death. i have tryed everything. even proffesjonals trainers couldnt help. he listen on anything exept not pulling. maybe he dossent like the leash ?
@0kriz when the dog starts to pull just he stop until he dceides you are not going any more. when you start again and he pulls just stop. you may have to do this many times but soon he will stop pulling and walk by your side.
God, it works!!!! after a week of suffering with my pulling new doberman/terrier mix of 8 months (it's a really strong dog) she totally understood after 10 minutes of going nowhere, to one side and the other. Of course is not perfect, it will take a while for her to make it perfect but for being the first day, WOW nothing had worked out with my dogs for years, and now this is working, thank you SO MUCH for this video, you are great!!!!
My pit previous owner had him pulling cars for exercise. Now my dog who is wonderful inside the house and with people is a pain on the leash. Others dogs outside make this even worse. I will try to technique but im afraid if i turn around i will be on my ass!
@phreum ahahhaha my doberman pinscher is the same too. when he's with a leash he pulls me so i cant do this to my dog, I'll try to do it but i dont think that this will work :D
Ok..I'm back from walking my dog according to this video...
My GOODNESS MAN!!! This really works man!!! I walked with my dog today & did everything in the video..10 minutes of walking made a REAL DIFFERENCE! My dog is about 1/2 way to not pulling now, a few more days or even a week I should have no pulling at all!
I also wanted to say i have been doing the "Dog pulls, You stop till there's slack" method for 2 weeks...My dog is getting alittle bit better at paying attention to me but she still runs ahead & pulls when i take 1 single step forward LITERALLY!
I'll try your method for a week & see if there's any difference at all.
"Now My dog is going 1 way, I'm going the other way. The dog is going to hit the end of the leash with the correction but now he's 6 feet away from me, by the time he turns around all he sees is me walking away"
I'm sorry..that part in the video is just funny to me for some reason!! Dog would be like.."wha the fork? where he going?"
My dog is very distractable on walks, always rushing to the next spot to sniff.
It does take some doing, but this right here does work. Every time Phil heads off his own way, I do a quick Uturn a couple times till all eyes are back on me and then we can proceed.
I found, this too late, i had been doing the pulling and tugging method. Although when started this he kinda had the jist of what was happening. then he would start to pull away. After awhile i even started to run, its such a good feeling having your dog running beside you looking up at you ( can only imagine what he's thinking) Thanx very much for this i feel we still have a long way togo. But we are heading in the right direction now......
Oh my gosh! This worked for my 7mo old GSD puppy. We are only on day two of trying this and she is totally getting it! So much so that when she feelings me drop the slack in the leash before I turn around, she is thinking and stops pulling and looks at me! Thank you for this awesome training technique
Might not work with all dogs, but has nothing to do with the dog's size and it doesn't mean that the alternative is jerking your dog around as there are other positive methods that might better suit your dog if this one doesn't. I think it's awful when ppl (and I don't mean you) suggest that "Since the dog is big, you harsh methods", thanks to Cisar Millan this idiocy has fans. Positive reinforcement might take longer, but seems to always get long term results that are sustainable.
Make sure you do not talk to the dog while you are working on this. Dogs get excited when you talk and will confuse them. Keep your head high and relaxed and give firm but fair corrections. Once they seem to be getting the hang of it and you are walking with a loose lead, then and only then can you pet the dog for approval or speak and give a good boy compliment.
step 2: The dog will hurry to catch up and as soon as your dog passes you turn around and repeat the step. It can take 5-10 minutes a day to work on it and can take a week or two but keep doing it and they will learn. good luck!
I had a dog that pulled and through lots of research came across a great way to cure the problem. Start with your dog in sit position, without saying a word and with a loose lead start walking at your normal pace. As soon as the dog decides to run in front just turn around and give the dog a quick/easy correction. You must be confident.
I think this is great fun its always played a lot at the weekends with my uncle he is totally awesome at it. I was lucky and found it perfectly free for my ps3 from here one blow . com they have thousands best thing about it is they are all free oh by the way 2:33 - 2:53 was fine

One of the doggies got a really bad cough immediately after hitting the end hard. I took him to the vet, who gave him hydrocodone. He coughed and was afraid of the leash for a week (the dog, not the vet). Glad to say, he got over it, and I got over "correction" as a training method. He's now walking loose-leash better than his buddy.
@Nitah89 The idea is not that the loose leash WILL lead to a correction, it is that anytime the dog walks ahead and can't see the handler, it has no idea what potential action the handler can take. While a competition-type heel (similar to what Sam does) is going to be impractical for long walks, the main idea is for the dog to follow the person. With a healthy balance of reinforcement and correction, any dog can do it.
yeah this would work great but my dog gets all twisted in the leash and he is falling and I am falling.... guess that is what I get for having a POMCHI
I wish Roxy would learn!! Shes a german shepard-husky mix, and when she pulls, she PULLS. Whenever she puls, I just stop in place until she stops, and over the weeks, its starting to work. Istill want to train her to stay by my side, so she wont run away. any advice?
give food dropped from your mouth to get attention of the dog. Dog will learn that staying close to you it ges food reward, but gets a pinch on the collar if the dog pulls
@bubbly384 I knew a lady who had one with that same mix and that thing was a terror. Awful dog lol. She was a nice chick and all but that dog was just diabolical and mean.
@bubbly384 what i do is randomly give my boys treats when they dont pull, but they dont know when i do and dont have treats, so they'll be good ALL the time. hasnt really worked yet though...
Thank you for this video, I try'd and apply to my dog but it not work, my dog is over two years old and he is German Shapard dog. Kindly tell me what to do -- so he will obay me and should not pull leash while I am taking him away on road. Also he is keep on sniffing on road - please tell me how to stop is sniffing habbit. Kind regards, and waiting for your reply please.
I have a wonderful service animal that is a dog. He's well trained, well mannered, and very cooperative. My life would be different, and limited, if I were not able to have him in attendance with me. Over the past 18 months, I HAVE LEARNED AND TRAINED to work with HIM. This is the most important part I realized about learning to use my service dog effectively. (see part 2)
(Part 2) The dog is trained; if I don't learn the proper to way to utilize him and to make sure he stays trained and to reinforce his obedience then, his training will become ineffective. The same principle is applied in training any animal or dog. The OWNER is being trained to utilize these skills effectively so that the owner is able to train the dog. (see part 3)
(Part 3) An additional note, training a companion dog is different from training a service animal. A service animal must have the capability of "intelligent disobedience." This means that even if I am not aware of my own need, usually medical, my service dog is able to discern this, recognizing the potential that my safety and welfare are at risk, and his "disobedience" is deliberate. (see part 4)
(Part 4) However, companion dogs are reliant on the training, and the willing cooperation, of their owner because they may not have the capacity to learn discernment on their own. In summary and in each case, keep in mind - YOU are being trained to train your pet.
I have a 5 month old Staffy/Collie/GSD cross who's tiny, but pulls like mad. I tried the stop/walk training, that didn't work. Then I tried the walk a bit/give a treat one, that didn't work either.
I wonder if there's an age when these things begin to work? ie maybe it's too much to expect a pup to walk to heel all the time in the street? I'm hoping if I keep doing 'heel' for a couple of yards in between the mad dashing and stubborn sitting, the pup will get the habit eventually. I do 'heel' with treat in hand and he has to follow the hand.
Yeahhh I keep hearing that she'll "calm down" in a few months - I went out and bought a nylon harness and she seems to have calmed down with it on - I would love to teach her to heel but it is so hard to get the attention!! Yeahh I guess if you keep doing the heel thing eventually he;ll get it!! How old is your dog?
IT WORKED! My 13 mo rottweiler was a rescue dog & didn't have any training. Pulled constantly. In < 5 min, she followed me instead of pulling me. When there was a distraction, I quickly turned & walked away. She "snapped" herself quite a few times but she stopped pulling. If I shorten the leash, she stays close; if I let it out, she may go to the end but will not pull. Wish I had it on video to show it works for big, untrained dogs!
i love watching your instructional videos. i find them both informative and highly satisfying knowing i can train my dog without paying an arm and a leg for a stranger to do it. i noticed in all your videos you work with dogs that are already trained in the command. i would like to see you work with dogs that aren't trained for that specific command so we can view a typical dog reaction and proper correction. thanks again
I was thinking the same thing. I notice a lot of 'trainers' already use dogs that are trained! Our dogs arent trained and it would be nice to see the 'training' in action.
As a 'trainer' this is difficult much of the time as a paying client won't want to stop due to filming considerations and so on. I can film myself with my own trained dogs with relative ease (tripods etc.) Getting someone to film me working never seems to be that easy! Unless you're offering!? :)
I agree, but my trainer showed me this exact same thing and it does work.
It takes some doing but it will get the dogs attention and keep it at your side.
And trust me, my dog is a excitable walker, not only will he rip your arm out, I've seen this 35lb puppy drag 270lb men.
Before I head out with Phil, we do a few laps up and down the driveway using this methods. There's still a way to go, but walks have been alot easier since.
you would see him pullig the hell out of it .. I totally agree with you - he's standing there with a dog that doesnt pull at all and tells me if he WOULD pull me i WOULD. My dog pulls i turn around and it keeps pulling - HELOO!?! - thats the firs reaction that you get when your dog has no idea what to do .. be real pls!
my dog is VERY stubborn, he wont stop leading and when i give him a treat for something good he just about bites my finger off, hes not a bad dog just stubborn help me out please
well like any animal you have got to show your dog, your alpha. people take that lightly but its true. when every my dog does something i dont like i stomp my foot and look at him. this techqiue he's teaching works, with bigger dogs especially. my dog will not let anyone NEXT TO ME AT ALL only if i introduce him to them first. sheperds are big and loyal animals, they look at you like your family.
well, the idea that i am a person, human. that assumption is already made clear. dogs see characteristic's of their owner and reflect it on to the others they see, so in retrospect the owner makes the dog =) psychology.
Try being more social with the Dog he has to know the words NO & his name. once thats complete. walking like this video is great but bigger dogs = bigger force. just keep that in mind.
Thanks heaps!! I did this for the first time tonight. It took over 10 minutes just to get him out of the driveway, but once he got the hang of it, I was able to walk him almost 2km with minimal pulling (I had to repeat the exercise about 10-15 times). When I can get him doing this constantly, it'll have gotten rid of my worry for when my Kelpie x Border Collie becomes full grown.
And im only 14, my parents say hes my responsibility, so i walk him everyday, buttttttt he pullllsss like crazy. once he pulled away and got hit by a car, but he was ok! hope this works!!
Hello - How long into the walk do you do this? I feel like she won't learn it in one walk so I won't be consistent if we continue the walk with her pulling.
maybe hurt his neck.if the dog have that much power all the time it maybe turn to bad behavior.did you know that when the dog is in front of you he is in control maybe you don't see it that way but that show the dog brain work. if you want to stop him there is an easy technique. when the dog go in front of you give him a little correction on the leash (important to have the leash on top of the neck) you "ask" the dog to following you instead of leading you.
well, "maybe" it does not hurt his neck because he is wearing that leash attached on the full shoulder ( he is a husky by the way), so anyway I know the rules of not letting him decide where to go, instead I tell him: "left", "right", "there", "here".... and he listens. So instead of writing: "what are thinking?" ask yourself what are you writing! (and just cut it off)
MY boxer pulls like CRAZY on the street. I probably look like a rigid wooden robot, trying to walk at my own pace while he's trying to blast off at 100mph!
I have had chihuahua's all of my life some mix breeds and Yorkies. I now have a Cavalier KChas. I am finding that I am the one needing the training first ! Not the dog! Once am trained.. and realize that each dog / breed is different.. I can adjust some of the technique's and make them work for the current dog. ( I have 3 ).
My huskie and I tried it and he was quite confused for the 1st 5 mins. After that...it clicked and I'm so happy (And emotional) that this works beautifully. Now my huskie walks head held high beside me all the time. (With some reminder at times of course!) THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
thank you for posting this. I will try your technique. if it works, I'm baking and sending you some fabulous cookies!!! Many other things that I need to work on my with marvelous GSD. This is a great start! Thank you.
I have a problem, when I attempt to walk my puppy, sometimes she walks a few meters, then she sits down instead of following my or pulling. What should I do? She refuses to get up and walk but will only walk when she feels like it. Also, when she walks, she doesn't walk beside me, but walks behind me.
u cant train properly with a retractable because you wont have the control and there will be constant tension on the leash which defeats the object of the training
My problem is that my Irish Setter, if he gets off his leash (he broke his collar a while back) is gone...he loves to run, and it doesn't matter if I chase him or not...does anyone have any real suggestions on how to train him not to bolt when he's off-leash? For his safety and well-being, any suggestions are welcome!
How old is the dog? where are you walking him when he does this breakaway? Is he distracted ? How often do you train with your dog, it should be done daily at least every 2 days for a wk, then change the setting a little.. and retrace the steps you did the first wk also. then change in 3 wks.. and retrace area/steps in 1 and 2. (build)
I have a dog who's nine years old and he's always pulled on a leash. My dad has tried to use Ceasar's method to end this behavior, but it never worked. I tried the method shown on this video and within 5 minutes, I was walking my dog with a loose leash!
stop lying. this shit don't work. this only works because Border Collies are the smartest dogs. if you have a hunting dog, this technique won't matter to him.
cubemaster13 - if your dog escapes then practice this somewhere where it can't get too far away and where it is safe. Practice in your garden/yard or an enclosed area like an empty tennis court.
I tried this and my dog got mad and ran away and I had to chase her for 10mins
She's a minuture pinscher and her head is small so she gets off of all the harnesses and collars I buy her please I really need help I'm getting tired of chasing her for over 10 mins she's so fast! Anyone have any advice
I use a choke collar and thats my dogs only collar. I dont choke my dog dont hit my dog I use it to gaurantee that she does not get away from me as she has done with basic collars. BAsic collers have even broke on me. I am a responsible dog owner that has a well trianed loving happy dog.
if you train the dog correctly there's no reason for a choke collar. my neighbor is 13 years old and has taught his 5 month old pit bull to not run off, not bark at other dogs, be gentle with small children, not jump on people, he never barks when someone rings the doorbell, he even trained him to shake someones hand when they come in the door! (that was for fun but its cool) but my point is that if you do it correctly the training IS the choke collar (metaphorically speaking)
You dont get the reason that I have a collar like this. I know and understand that I have an animal that has instincts to run after other animals whether they are trained or not this will happen. I have had regular collars fail and my dog is to important to me to have hit by a car or run up on another dog, because at 5 months old they havent reached adulthood and are less likely to run off at that young of an age. My dog again is well trained but it is an animal.
That is good that you don't want your dog to escape, one great collar that I have discovered after using choke collars without being able to train my dog is a gentle leader it prevents pulling because it makes the dog's head turns sideways when they pull instead of tightening so they can't go forward much. If your dog already heels and the collar is just to have an extra strong collar that works though.
My advice would be this- Do not chase your dog when it runs off. Chasing it makes it think this is a great fun game.
My dog is four years old. When she was a puppy she used to run off all the time until one day I decided i wasn't going to chase her anymore, so what i did was, I turned my back on her instead and slowly walked in the opposite direction. This showed her that the game wasn't happening anymore and she began to follow me.
It's hard but it does work. My dog does not run off now.
I have this problem with a friends dog. When i clip him off the leash he will surely just run away but i a not sure if hes already dependent on me enough or if he would just walk away lol. So i reather chase him. Better then if he gets hit by a car or lose. maybe after some time. Althoug its reather stupid to train a dog which you have just temporary. My friend dont have time to train him though :-/ .. guesse i need to get my own dog and take care of him myself :-D
I agree. Don't chase your dog! We had a german shepard that loved to play the run away game. He thought it was a lot of fun. Once we stopped chasing him, the game was over. We would just go home, open the gate, place a big bucket of fresh water by the door, and within ten minutes he was home. Eventually he stopped the run away game.
Loads of people say it doesn't work, but I usually find that these people don't practise it the right way. I don't even look at Elly when I walk away. It was either... get her to follow me, or lose her, and I certainly didn't want to lose her!
If an owner gets the dog to stay with them while walking of the lead or leash, then it solves all sorts of problems in the future like running away from home and running off if the leash gets accidentally dropped or broken.
OMG I wish I had the guts to do that... Mine has run off a couple of time, and although I know the theory, I'm always too scrared... So I run like mad after the dog! :(
@amoramorena if you are scared from your own dog... the dog will notice that and make adventage of it -_- u gotta show whos in charge..... if you respect your dog and give him love and mostly the attention he needs he will respect you back + never kick or use angry body language to your dog because then you will feed him with fear wich involve to agression....(the thing is , people who are scared from there own dogs dont notice they are just making one!)
my dog is a runner, and when he gets off the leash I stand still and call loudly. Once he see's I'm not with him, he get's nervious and stops right away.
If I ran with him, he'd think it a game.
Ironicly using this method my dog has better off leash then on. It seems the leash is becoming counteractive to training him. On the other I live in a very populated heavy traffic area so I'd rather live with that detriment as apose to the potential of seeing him hit by a car.
This really worked! I tried it last night on my 7 month old Newfoundland. She's 80lbs so I was very tired of her pulling while we were on a walk. She pretty much got it after 5 minutes! Thanks!
Thanks Eric! Our little Maltese was always in a hurry to be a step or four ahead on walks and would pull and pull. When we stop, he would heel but starting again, pull pull pull. After about 7 times of reversing directions, he got the idea that at my left side was the best place for him during movement. He was kinda' pissed or frustrated the first couple of times but I think he thought it was him and not me and now he doesn't choke himself, he seems happier, and I couldn't be more proud. YAY!
well you shouldn't pull you should correct with the snap of a training collar..the important part is to really make a positive and negative..this method shown on the video works eventually... You should say heel as you walk the dog and repeat good good heal as he walks on your left side with no pulling or sniffing the ground
i think my dog was a serial killer in a past lifetime...lol...nevertheless i SHALL put this video into practice tomorrow and see how the bitch reacts to it, hoping also my dog will learn how not to pull on the leash.
Outstanding. This worked PERFECTLY! My 1 year old Beagle Mix pulled like a maniac for the entire walk up until about half an hour ago when I watched your video. He now walks like an angel and he just seems pleased as punch about the whole thing. Thanks so much.
tnx ill try that... its a great idea... i think that would prevent pulling me sidewards... wat about pulling me forward..? tnx for the suggestion... really appreciate it
when it pulls you forward you should try what the video shows.i read in another comment that he pulls you the other way when you turn.that means you just have to practice it more.if you still have trouble i would suggest wearing your dog a choke collar so the effect of you pulling the other way will be greater.
thank u very much... i think this dog of mine is the most hard headed dog i've ever handled... he doesnt like people too... he had trauma after an accident... tnx again 4 ur help i'll try to do that
I have a 3 months old gsd and he pulls like crazy when i try to walk him. I dont have a long leash like that so what i do is when ever he pulls i stop right away and let him sit for 10 seconds and keep repeating. U think this method is good? Thanls for your vid

Thank you so much for these videos!!! I'm 14 years old and my mom got me a dog, but decides not to help me with ANYTHING. My family's idea of training dogs is hitting. when you apply tension the dog feel tens and not relaxed then he realises once the lead is un tence he relaxes and so do you so he knows that if he dosnt want to feel your tension he must walk by your side or behind you but not in front :)

0kriz 1 year ago

ME SO HAPPY! YES YES YA"LL!!
jbentley8383 1 year ago
I also wanted to say i have been doing the "Dog pulls, You stop till there's slack" method for 2 weeks...My dog is getting alittle bit better at paying attention to me but she still runs ahead & pulls when i take 1 single step forward LITERALLY!
I'll try your method for a week & see if there's any difference at all.
jbentley8383 1 year ago 2
"Now My dog is going 1 way, I'm going the other way. The dog is going to hit the end of the leash with the correction but now he's 6 feet away from me, by the time he turns around all he sees is me walking away"
I'm sorry..that part in the video is just funny to me for some reason!! Dog would be like.."wha the fork? where he going?"

very important point....don't let the neg reinforcement be associated with the walker....good

It is far better to change direction 90 degrees instead of 180. A dog is easily moved sideways, and it's therefore less harmful.

Does it works with all dogs?
lyricjam 1 year ago
@lyricjam
Positive reinforcement might take longer, but seems to always get long term results that are sustainable.
gavroash 1 year ago
Make sure you do not talk to the dog while you are working on this. Dogs get excited when you talk and will confuse them. Keep your head high and relaxed and give firm but fair corrections. Once they seem to be getting the hang of it and you are walking with a loose lead, then and only then can you pet the dog for approval or speak and give a good boy compliment.
lilcoz08 1 year ago
step 2: The dog will hurry to catch up and as soon as your dog passes you turn around and repeat the step.

JiveDadson 2 years ago
But wouldn't the dog associate the un-tence leash with the correction? "Oh no, the leash is slack, now I'll feel uncomfortable"?
Nitah89 2 years ago 7
@Nitah89 The idea is not that the loose leash WILL lead to a correction, it is that anytime the dog walks ahead and can't see the handler, it has no idea what potential action the handler can take. While a competition-type heel (similar to what Sam does) is going to be impractical for long walks, the main idea is for the dog to follow the person. With a healthy balance of reinforcement and correction, any dog can do it.
Great video, and good boy Sam!
Sabot46290 1 year ago
@Nitah89 i think its because it creates a small tug which lets the dog know he's made a mistake

(see part 2)
americassweetie1 2 years ago
(Part 2) The dog is trained; if I don't learn the proper to way to utilize him and to make sure he stays trained and to reinforce his obedience then, his training will become ineffective. The same principle is applied in training any animal or dog. The OWNER is being trained to utilize these skills effectively so that the owner is able to train the dog. (see part 3)
americassweetie1 2 years ago
(Part 3) An additional note, training a companion dog is different from training a service animal. A service animal must have the capability of "intelligent disobedience." This means that even if I am not aware of my own need, usually medical, my service dog is able to discern this, recognizing the potential that my safety and welfare are at risk, and his "disobedience" is deliberate. (see part 4)
americassweetie1 2 years ago
(Part 4) However, companion dogs are reliant on the training, and the willing cooperation, of their owner because they may not have the capacity to learn discernment on their own. In summary and in each case, keep in mind - YOU are being trained to train your pet.
americassweetie1 2 years ago
Does this work?
I have a 5 month old Staffy/Collie/GSD cross who's tiny, but pulls like mad. I tried the stop/walk training, that didn't work. Then I tried the walk a bit/give a treat one, that didn't work either.
I'm tearing my hair out.
Krispyb84 2 years ago
I wonder if there's an age when these things begin to work? ie maybe it's too much to expect a pup to walk to heel all the time in the street? I'm hoping if I keep doing 'heel' for a couple of yards in between the mad dashing and stubborn sitting, the pup will get the habit eventually. I do 'heel' with treat in hand and he has to follow the hand.
HappyHag 2 years ago
Yeahhh I keep hearing that she'll "calm down" in a few months - I went out and bought a nylon harness and she seems to have calmed down with it on - I would love to teach her to heel but it is so hard to get the attention!! Yeahh I guess if you keep doing the heel thing eventually he;ll get it!! How old is your dog?
Krispyb84 2 years ago
My dog's about four months old. I do find the training is easier indoors, where there are less distractions!
HappyHag 2 years ago
Wish I had it on video to show it works for big, untrained dogs!
kathyn1000 2 years ago
i love watching your instructional videos. i find them both informative and highly satisfying knowing i can train my dog without paying an arm and a leg for a stranger to do it. i noticed in all your videos you work with dogs that are already trained in the command. i would like to see you work with dogs that aren't trained for that specific command so we can view a typical dog reaction and proper correction. thanks again
wardlowkd 2 years ago
I was thinking the same thing. I notice a lot of 'trainers' already use dogs that are trained! Our dogs arent trained and it would be nice to see the 'training' in action.
whiteroseuk 2 years ago 101
As a 'trainer' this is difficult much of the time as a paying client won't want to stop due to filming considerations and so on. I can film myself with my own trained dogs with relative ease (tripods etc.) Getting someone to film me working never seems to be that easy! Unless you're offering!? :)
AlphaDogBehaviour 2 years ago
@whiteroseuk
There's still a way to go, but walks have been alot easier since.

well like any animal you have got to show your dog, your alpha. people take that lightly but its true. when every my dog does something i dont like i stomp my foot and look at him. this techqiue he's teaching works, with bigger dogs especially. my dog will not let anyone NEXT TO ME AT ALL only if i introduce him to them first. sheperds are big and loyal animals, they look at you like your family.
darkside3704 2 years ago

AlphaDogBehaviour 2 years ago
well, the idea that i am a person, human. that assumption is already made clear. dogs see characteristic's of their owner and reflect it on to the others they see, so in retrospect the owner makes the dog =) psychology.

Thanks heaps!! I did this for the first time tonight. It took over 10 minutes just to get him out of the driveway, but once he got the hang of it, I was able to walk him almost 2km with minimal pulling (I had to repeat the exercise about 10-15 times). joelstutz 2 years ago
maybe hurt his neck.if the dog have that much power all the time it maybe turn to bad behavior.did you know that when the dog is in front of you he is in control maybe you don't see it that way but that show the dog brain work. if you want to stop him there is an easy technique. when the dog go in front of you give him a little correction on the leash (important to have the leash on top of the neck) you "ask" the dog to following you instead of leading you.
monijento 2 years ago
well, "maybe" it does not hurt his neck because he is wearing that leash attached on the full shoulder ( he is a husky by the way), so anyway I know the rules of not letting him decide where to go, instead I tell him: "left", "right", "there", "here".... and he listens. So instead of writing: "what are thinking?" ask yourself what are you writing! (and just cut it off)

u cant train properly with a retractable because you wont have the control and there will be constant tension on the leash which defeats the object of the training

(build)

get a choke coller. You dont have to choke your dog with it but it wont get away.
Then teach her not to run from you.
urTimesup 2 years ago
choke collars are terrible dude, why would you even suggest that?
PimpinFilms 2 years ago 3
I use a choke collar and thats my dogs only collar. I dont choke my dog dont hit my dog I use it to gaurantee that she does not get away from me as she has done with basic collars. BAsic collers have even broke on me. I am a responsible dog owner that has a well trianed loving happy dog.
urTimesup 2 years ago
if you train the dog correctly there's no reason for a choke collar. my neighbor is 13 years old and has taught his 5 month old pit bull to not run off, not bark at other dogs, be gentle with small children, not jump on people, he never barks when someone rings the doorbell, he even trained him to shake someones hand when they come in the door! (that was for fun but its cool) but my point is that if you do it correctly the training IS the choke collar (metaphorically speaking)
PimpinFilms 2 years ago
You dont get the reason that I have a collar like this. I know and understand that I have an animal that has instincts to run after other animals whether they are trained or not this will happen. I have had regular collars fail and my dog is to important to me to have hit by a car or run up on another dog, because at 5 months old they havent reached adulthood and are less likely to run off at that young of an age. My dog again is well trained but it is an animal.
urTimesup 2 years ago
Please don't use a choke collar, in my experience they are uncomfortable, dangerous and they teach a dog absolutely nothing!
1blockhead1 2 years ago
That is good that you don't want your dog to escape, one great collar that I have discovered after using choke collars without being able to train my dog is a gentle leader it prevents pulling because it makes the dog's head turns sideways when they pull instead of tightening so they can't go forward much. If your dog already heels and the collar is just to have an extra strong collar that works though.
ItwillbeAugust02 2 years ago
choke collars can be dangerous for the dogs if the owners don't know how to handle the choke collar. You will damage neckmuscle.
GuitarFreakBashing 2 years ago
Get an Invisible Fence! They really work. Be sure to get the real brand though because there are alot of them out there that are not as good.

1blockhead1 2 years ago 12
i tried that alot and she didnt react at all she just kept running and almost got run over D: im never doin that again it took longer to catch her
i have a minuture pincher and they are very small dogs and know to be very very hyper
cubemaster13 2 years ago
I have this problem with a friends dog. When i clip him off the leash he will surely just run away but i a not sure if hes already dependent on me enough or if he would just walk away lol. So i reather chase him. Better then if he gets hit by a car or lose. maybe after some time. Althoug its reather stupid to train a dog which you have just temporary. My friend dont have time to train him though :-/ .. guesse i need to get my own dog and take care of him myself :-D
platonicx 2 years ago
InMaiWorld 2 years ago
Loads of people say it doesn't work, but I usually find that these people don't practise it the right way. I don't even look at Elly when I walk away. It was either... get her to follow me, or lose her, and I certainly didn't want to lose her!
If an owner gets the dog to stay with them while walking of the lead or leash, then it solves all sorts of problems in the future like running away from home and running off if the leash gets accidentally dropped or broken.

Yes, even if your dog has a independent personality (like mine) you always have to show that you are dominant.
For me and Phil, time outs are what worked, but every pup is different. Spike was a loud hand clap and shout.
Whatever it is, let them know, you have the power or they will walk all over you. De dominant, not domineering
Call a trainer if you need help, and when looking for a dog, avoid the puppy cute and be sure the full grown breed is something you can handle.

@IsayRooof
If your dog is agressive towards you, you should seek a trainer.
I'm not trying to call you out, even if he's agressive to other things when you're around, get that under control.
At least where I live, a couple threat reports to the police will have a dog taken and put down :(

@1blockhead1
my dog is a runner, and when he gets off the leash I stand still and call loudly.

YAY!

i wonder if this will work on my rotti pup..??
rinconpinky2011 2 years ago
Omg i'm doing it all wrong. I was told to pull to correct unwanted behaviour. I'm worried he'll associate negative feeling toward me.
Will definitely try this thanks
dazclean 2 years ago
well you shouldn't pull you should correct with the snap of a training collar..the important part is to really make a positive and negative..this method shown on the video works eventually...

Thanks so much.

tnx ill try that... its a great idea... i think that would prevent pulling me sidewards... wat about pulling me forward..? tnx for the suggestion... really appreciate it
syrosis18 2 years ago
when it pulls you forward you should try what the video shows.i read in another comment that he pulls you the other way when you turn.that means you just have to practice it more.if you still have trouble i would suggest wearing your dog a choke collar so the effect of you pulling the other way will be greater.
