  • This is the "extended ending", however, many people confuse this ending, with the second ending that was shot. This is NOT, the second ending! That ending was longer, and depicted a dual between Molosar and Glaeken, which took place in the upper tower of the keep. During the dual, the roof collapses and a giant laser light comes up from out of the basement of the keep. The two antagonists begin falling. There is more to it of course. Only still photos from this ending have been seen in public.

  • @InCameras

From what I'd heard, this sequence was never completed because the effects chief died and took all his secrets to the grave. Some of the blue screen or green screen footage, as it were, was shot, but the effects were not, so the entirety of it was scrapped. The end you are referring to was in an early version of the shooting script, but I'm not sure how much of it wound up in the final shooting schedule, anyways.

  • Love this movie and have seen it DOZENS of times but first time I've seen this ending. I like it but I think I like the ambiguity of the other ending as it allows the viewer to ponder, but thanks very much for posting it. Now I have something new to ponder.

  • I worked on the laser SPFX for Glaeken's staff in 1982 at Filmfex when I was 21. Nice to see the movie is still appreciated these days.

  • His original film ran 3 1/2 hours, that's why the cuts.

  • Much better ending. Hopefully some day soon we'll see the uncut version. The one we got is such a mess.

  • A much better ending to one of the most under rated films

  • It's not bad, I think that is interesting if it was that way in the original novel. But since it was not released that way--it feels out of place. Like the "happy ending" forced upon Terry Gilliam on "BRAZIL" by the producers. I will be more than happy if it gets included on a Blu Ray release someday...

  • Either way, The Keep is a masterpiece of 80's synth-horror-scifi-laser-awesomeness...

  • I like the other ending , sacrifice should have some weight and permanent consequences to add real value to the sacrifice I hate 99% of Hollywood movie happy ending I was more happy with the gloomy ending.

  • The book is great too! Much more detail about most aspects of the story. And this ending more closely matches that of the book's, you will be glad to know. But what a book it is!! I highly recommend it!

  • @ashika1009 Hey ashika. I'm responding to your posting about the movie "The Keep" and it's alternate ending. In it, you mentioned the book and how much you liked it. I love the movie, didn't know about the book , but would like to take your recommendation and read it. I wonder, would you mind forwarding the authors name to me by chance? I'm sure I would enjoy it as well. Thanks for your insight. Sincerely Dennis Richards.

  • @iman80zMan F. Paul Wilson. The book is a masterpiece and slays the film

  • ah j'adore!! je préfère cette fin la !!

  • i LOVE the Ending they should make the sequel!!!Excellent film!!!

  • Thank you, thank you for posting this! This is one of my favorite movies, but it always made me sad, because he sacrificed himself for the good and lived forever in the dark. This ending should have be used, for it shows the real triumph of good over evil.Humans need to still believe in that concept, those of us that are still human. Feeling powerless against the inhumanity of man. I can now think of this ending instead and still believe in the endurance and power of love. Thank you. Love&Light

  • Great movie it takes its time to tell the story and is all the better for it, liked the original ending more than the on shown above. I agree with jorges003 remake or even a prequel!

  • Im Been Searching this Movie For Years,,, i Finally Found it !!One Of Michael Mann rare Excellent Film Of All Time ,,There Should Make A remake And A Sequel!!!!!

  • I was surprised that this movie got 11% on Rotten Tomatoes. I mean, yeah, the pacing was kinda drawn out, but the end result is still a superb film with a hell of an atmosphere. I don't find anything wrong with this ending, but I still preferred the original, even if this is more true to the book.....

  • I love this movie and the book is great too. Read the book first then watch the movie. The music is the all time best. Tangerine Dream did the soundtrack. I saw them in concert in Germany. I have this on VHS from the 80s with this ending. Thanks for posting it.

  • Now available via Netflix streaming!

  • Ahhhh, this is wonderful! You have made us, Alberta Watson fans, a big gift. Thank you so much!

Wonderful film, first class actors, first class director.

  • Thanks.

  • Listen on 'E' and your mind will free its self. Such a beautiful sound.

  • Thus is one they should do a remake. With all the CGI availalble would EFX would do great

  • One of my all time favorite movies. Best score ever written. Besides maybe Halloween 3: Season of The Witch or Angst.

  • @HAEM0RRHAGE

Great Sci-fi horror fantasy Lovecraftian vampire movie eh? if you liked this one, i recommend Lifeforce, Near Dark, Prince of Darkness, Hellboy 1 & 2, Fright Night 1 & 2, The Hunger, Daybreakers, The Bunker, Vampire Hunter D 1 & 2, The Fog, Vamp and Lair of the White Worm.

  • Outstanding.

  • one of the greatest films never to be released on dvd and excellent to see this ending thanks for puting it on

  • Not a bad film, but the book was much better. Tangerine Dream always does such atmospheric scores, though.

  • @shiromori This movie impressed me a lot more than the book. The book was just a vampire story, this movie was a great deal more.

  • Comment removed

  • @Sostratos If you read the sequels, you'll see that Rasalom is much more than a vampire. The whole eastern european connection was just a bunch of lies he made up to disguise what he truly was. In "Reborn" and later, Rasalom comes across almost as a sort of Anti-Christ, though stripped of any religious context.

  • @shiromori That may be the case, but in the context of this movie and the book upon which it was based, I found Rasalom to be vastly more compelling in the movie. He's one of my all time favorite film antagonists.

  • There have been numerous bootleg CDs of the soundtrack, and one official one. In 2001, Tangerine Dream put out a 3 CD set called "The Millennium Edition" which was a super limited edition set, and it came out only in Britain. However, it did NOT contain the end theme of Walking in the Air, which was a huge disappointment. Almost all the other parts of the soundtrack have been released on various other TD CDs, but not that one song. (Most of the material is on the "Logos" CD.)

  • If you get the Tangerine Dream Album 'Logos" it is choke full of features from this soundtrack!

  • thankyou i've loved this movie since i was a kid never seen this ending before. five star mate thanks.

  • I'm SOOOO glad I found this on YouTube. I watched this movie in its full extended version on a local channel that needed to fill time, and that's the last I ever saw of that version. I remember a very cool scene (at least I think I remember--please tell me I'm not crazy!) of Molosar and Glaeken standing on some other plane of existence or in some smoky realm. They were sort of fighting but also talking. The music during that scene inspired me as a child. Does anyone remember this?

  • Oops! Sorry. Didn't want to mock you but that sayno2drugs12 fool. But I don't think he's ever coming back.

  • There was also another ending, know as "the duel". This ending has never been seen!Molosar and Glaeken duel inside the keep and the fight moves to a tower on the roof of the keep that was also cut from the movie, the duel progresses until the structure of the toer collapses down into the interior of the keep and a large blue laser light shoots from out of the basement and then the two somehow fall into an abyss, purportedly a time tunnel like cavern. It featured wire work to simulate fall

  • @Rasher1111111, I believe that's the ending that I saw! Holy crap, I thought I was going crazy. Were they standing on some other realm of existence or something with smoke all around? Were they talking as they were fighting? I remember that scene (I think!). That was more than 20 years ago, so it's hard to remember for sure. The music during that scene inspired me as a child to be the composer I am today!

  • The most underrated film in History. One of my top 5. A classic!

  • i saw the version of the keep with this ending on bbc2 on sunday night in a film show in 94 called alex cox's lost classic's

ever since then i can never get the film out of my mind and i'm trying to buld little collection of stuff to do with the keep all i have at the moment is the book, a graphic novel, the vhs and a dvd copy oh and the last book with Molosar in it NIGHTWORLD does anyone know where i can get any other stuff.

  • check my videos for a soundtrack.

  • @tobie1 Where can i get the soundtrack

  • @Midnight3377 oh one more thing has anyone got a copy of the keep with the alt ending

  • NIGHTWORLD by F. Paul Wilson reveals our hero's "ultimate" fate.

  • I wonder why Michael Mann chose not to keep this ending, it's a lot better than the usual one and it's in the book as well.

  • @penelopeat8pm The studio altered the movie... Michael Mann was not at all happy with their tampering of the film.

  • Ahh ok... that makes sense. =)

    I hated the ending.

  • Agreed. But for whatever reasons, he chose the ending he did.

  • because from what ive read, the producers basically took over production due to it being over-budget and out of time. And thoroughly destroyed Mann's attempt at a more accurate adaptation of the movie.

They used the other ending, they cut out a lot of scenes, etc.

  • @penelopeat8pm Maybe he thinks heroes to sacrifice themselves to save others is more epic than the mega happy ending.

  • @penelopeat8pm Agreed, I would have edited a little for pace but I like this ending better than what was released.

  • @penelopeat8pm yeah, seriously.

  • @penelopeat8pm good question.

  • Wow, thanks for this! I'd never thought I'd ever get to watch the alternate ending!

  • Scott Glenn would've made a cool Silver Surfer back in the day.

  • I just finished the book, and it's really cool, but the movie...it's really awful, I didn't like it at all. There are so much good stuff that was cut, important for the story. Someone should remake this film respecting the plot and with a better soundtrack and good effects this could be a great movie!

  • I also read the book and the story is certainly worth of better movie than this. There are few things I would recommend for re-use from this old movie. The music by Tangerine Dream is good. There are also some effective sequences that Michael Mann made very well, such as the stealing silver cross and the first appearance of Molasar.

  • he became mortal and lived his days out with her....the end....

  • I hope I see a part 2 before I die and leave this earth.

  • eh... and Godfather would be good if it wasn't so 70s? And 12 Angry Men would be good if it wasn't so 60s? Gimme a break dude. I almost deleted your comment but I'm going to leave it on here for everyone to see and mock.

  • I wish her hair wasn't so 80's. ;)

  • you don't get me, it's set in the 40's but is bare 80's, as in the feel of it, godfather doesn't seem 70's it seems pretty timeless, don't know what 12 angry men is, also no one has mocked me so merked

  • @pewburrito Mock, mock, mock!!!

  • @pewburrito

i'm with you. that's what gave this movie that certain mystique. Face it, Mann is pure genius.

  • @sayno2drugs12

Would you rather see a modern remake?

  • @sayno2drugs12 being made in the 80's is what makes it so great! No CGI, just pure imagination and story with a unique musical score by Tangerine Dream unlike the generic mundane shit around now.

And before you think i am some old twat (aged 36) against the use of technology, let me tell you that i have been computing for about 30 years from early 8 bit, 16 bit and current technology, but there is now an OVERUSE of CGI that detracts everything, so as such masterpieces like this don't now exist

  • Thanks for this.

  • I don't mean to offend anyone here...honestly...but I'm amazed that the film was actually released rather than being indefinitely shelved. How the studio thought this was going to find a sufficiently large audience is beyond me and what a waste of a fine cast. I had no idea the movie was this bad.

  • Fair enough. But when the 3 hour director's cut [hopefully] gets released on DVD, it may go a long way to improve the film's public perception.

  • Rbatty2, it probably was the studio panicing and cutting the film to shreds, so that scenes just seem to suddenly start and stop without any consistent tone being built up, but I still think the movie seems very abstract and ungrounded in any sense of it's own reality. I guess we'll never know unless Mann does release a longer version. I still think this is a cult movie though, like Ridley Scott's Legend.

  • I will admit while Michael Mann is one of my cinematic gods, this is one of his weakest. And the original F. Paul Wilson novel I like a lot more. But again, the long version will probably be a different film. As it stands, the theatrical version for me is a great film to watch for the visuals, mood and the Tangerine Dream score.

But I do wish it would make more sense.

  • Yeah I heard so much good stuff was cut out.

  • We may get to see it.

  • The film is a metaphor for atomic weapons and the Faustian choice involved in their creation. Molasar (atomic energy) is confined (in a square pile) and his release vanquishes evil, but at a cost for the future.

  • I want a director's cut of this film....NOW!!!!!

  • uh okay, i should have read the comments :-)

  • 1:05 to 1:20 sounds A LOT like "walking in the air" from Howard Blake

  • now there is the reflection

  • I like this alternate ending. It is also more faithful to the Wilson's novel, compared to the other ending.

  • so does Eva's (I tink thats her name) father get zapped back into his disabled, elderly form by the evil humanoid? He looks as if he is walking under his own power.

  • I thought he was reincarnated as Jurgen Prochnow, but seeing Scott Glenn does it justice

  • Does anyone else think this music sounds like The Snowman?

  • That's because it is the Snowman theme.

  • It is similar isn't it? Same key, D, similar theme and chords. I wonder if Howard Blake was inspired!

  • It's THE song, by Howard Blake. Its credited. Howard Blake's song came first, then Tangerine Dream did their cover for the end of the KEEP. :) Sorry I wasn't specific enough before.

  • Ah yes, I've just seen it on IMDB. It also seems to be filmed about 15 miles from where I now live, in north Wales. Weird!

  • Wales is AMAZING!!

  • Does anyone know if there is a clean track without the movie effects available somewhere? On a CD perhaps?

  • Tangerine Dream has the isolated score, somewhere, including their version of "Walking in the Air (Snowman)". Unfortunately, the official soundtrack was never released because of a "rights-fight" with Virgin record label.

If a DVD or bluray *ever* come out , there's a chance there might be an isolated score as a feature, but I really, really doubt it.

For a detailed history of all the delays and broken promises regarding the DVD release of this film, check out its page on IMDB and Amazon

  • @Fuligula Actually, I recently saw "The Keep - Ultimate Edition" a 3 CD collection of all the music Tangerine Dream did for the movie. A lot of it unused material. I'm not sure exactly where you can find it but it's out there.

  • @pewburrito The fact that they covered the theme tune from an earlier production kind of takes away some of the power from that particular part of the score.

  • LOVE this film sooo much, thank you for posting the alternate ending! Wish it was out on DVD. What a treat, seeing a new bit after all these years. :-)

  • movie sucks did not do justice to the book. man am i sorry i watched this,

  • Actually, in the book Glaeken Trismegistos is allowed to return and become mortal because he has stood as the guardian of the evil Molassar throught the ages and protected mankind from him. By destroying Molassar his duty is completed and he is rewarded.

  • And that is exactly my point: F. Paul Wilson's Molassar is a "Gothic Horror" character based on the same Eastern European legends that prompted Bram Stoker to create Dracula.

There are 500 years of history about The Golem that can be researched, and in this case, a 1980's film can have the ending(and the special features treatment)that it deserves.

  • Did you see the 1966 film "It!"? This one was also about the Golem. I had read about the Golem some time before which is why I went to see "It!"

The film "The Keep" does not show the novel's early manifestation of Molassar as a Dracula-like character, which I think it a shame.

  • Good call, Angeloschild

I loved watching "IT!" on late night weekend schlock, and that film deserves cudos as a Hammer wannabe horror classic.

But considering Molassar's rebirth, he is a revenge character who choses his own master, who then becomes Molassar's personal monster by curing his ailments. The frail Dr, Cuzo turns into a healthy "Igor". How vampiric is that?

  • This is much like the ending in the book, the hero doesn't get sucked into the keep and never to be seen again. He gets the girl, because he's the Guardian of the Keep.

  • Refurbish the original and include the remains like TAK says, because this film means different things to everybody.

I always felt that this film is a sequel to the 1920 silent film THE GOLEM, based on a novel written 500 years ago about a Rabbi that animates a man made of clay, who learns about good and evil from the men who control him. Golum is subdued, but in THE KEEP's rebirth, he reverses the role as long as he can have a living host to do his bidding: Revenge for his dead villagers.

  • What I meant by "remake" is done with new direction and script. The original should simply be remastered and the deleted scenes replaced, so that we can see this beautiful masterpiece of light, music and sound as it was meant to be. A classic should never be tampered with...only refurbished. It would be like trying to recreate the Ancient Ruins of Greece or Egypt. You just don't do it.

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've been waiting for most of my life to see this. The combination of the absolutely _awesome_ (and still unreleased, as of 2008) music with the proper footage of the movie's end is one of the best audio-visual marriages ever accomplished in film.

  • Also I just watched this piece again. Most of the music from the Ninja movies I watched growing up stole from TG. Dream. What a rip off. My childhood is now ruined

  • True this would be a bad remake as Herc T says. This film is an alchemist's nightmare, but the metal cross power puzzle is easy.

The silver cross attracts evil and snares it, the nickel crosses charge the natural power of the earth to keep evil subdued, the iron cross symbolizes the blood of a "humane man"(relative to hemogloben), and the crooked swaztika releases rage from both good and evil(and Prochnow has a wonderful monologue about that!). And then there's the Talisman...

  • thx for the upload. this movie is one of my favs. definately glad they didnt use this as the ending tho!

  • Please tell us, how did you get this ending - is it from one of the Laserdisc releases, or did you record it from TV or were you able to get ahold of some actual film?

  • Definitely one of the most misunderstood and most mysterious films ever. The music; the scenery; the characters...a dream...a classic...and I hope it is never redone, as it will surely be ruined.

    Herc T

  • Mann is a lot like Kubrick in the way he interprets a novel adapted to screen. Case in point is MANHUNTER which I thought was better than RED DRAGON.

This movie is unique in the horror genre because it shows a vampire crushing a cross in his hand. You must see why by watching the entire film.

It's good to see Glaeken's soul redeemed by his taboo lover in the end; and of course the SFX are top-notch which means only one thing:

PLEASE PUT THIS ON DVD! I WANT IT!

  • whats funny about this is that this ending was actually used in prints used for tv to extend the running time! my father has a copy of this movie that he taped from late night tv, and its actually better that the offical vhs release, and has this ending.of course the tape he has is more than a decade old, but its just wierd the stuff you run into at 2 in the morning.

  • If you are wondering why the music sounds like The Snowman that's because it is. It was a nod to the fact that Radu Molasar is a golem (in the film) like the snowman could be considered as.

  • I found the article. The restored 3 hour version [a newly struck 35mm print] was screened at the Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square in London on January 26, 2008. It was accompanied by a Q and A with the cast crew [don't know if that included Mann]. I envy whoever attended. Let's hope those prints get circulated around the globe so we can see what Mann intended.

  • Are you for real? This is the only mann movie I have never seen. Its like The Donner Cut of Superman. You hear for years about thses kinds of movies. I want to see more footage. It needs the Blade Runner treatment!!!

  • Fantastic! Thanks for this. Astonishes me that Hollywood didn't do the usual 'happy ever after' ending - especially as it is the way it should have been according to the novel.

  • I heard awhile ago on the Fangoria website that Mann is restoring his original 3 hour cut [yeah, that long] and was screening it at some film festival in Europe. Hopefully we'll get to see it. If Paramount chopped it up, it would explain Mann's problems with the theatrical version. Thanks for posting the clip, its a big improvement on the original ending. Mann is the MAN and Tangerine Dream rocks!

  • they should perhaps redo the ending (molasar/gleaken fight) in cg like beowolf, so the movie can finally be seen in its full glory!

  • This is THE ultimate cult movie. I don't know why Mann shuns it - I guarantee it will one day be acknowledged as one of his finest work when all his other 'ordinary L.A cop' films lose their shine - this will remain.

He should have some balls and re-birth it.

The parallels to Ridley Scotts Blade Runner are very similar...

  • Tangerine Dream's music is one of the greatest things about this film along with Michael Mann's directing. Could someone please upload the entire film on here please?

I think we'd all really appreciate it.

  • they're playing it during "the festival of the Fantastic Film" in Brussels. Man, I thing they should relaese this film on DVD. This truly is Michael Mann"s best film next to "The Last of the Mohicans" & "Colleteral".

  • Yeah, I know. Have you been on the site to The Keep done by that french special effects guy? He'll be present at the festival.

  • yep, I have. It's even registered among my favorites (websites).

  • Thank you!!!!!!! This has to be one of the most underappreciated movies of all time. It is magical and hypnotic. It is a real shame that I have to live with a 20+ year old VHS copy. Mann and Paramount should just do the world a favor and release it to the public domain. Let someone who cares produce a DVD.

  • god damn! i've been waiting for years to see this ending! michael mann needs to get off his ass, quit making sub par miami vice movies and remaster and re-release this on dvd! kudos to pewburrito!

  • The Keep was truly a one off, ie a great movie. Everything about it I loved I must have watched it 20 times and was never bored. Scrounging video shops for old tapes for sale I managed to get 2 copies on VHS coz this one special movie. They are absolutely NUTS for not releasing a directors cut on DVD.

  • Michael Mann is an awesome director. Two of my top 10 all time favorite films are this one and Manhunter. The music for both is incredible. That helps to make the movie that much more wonderful.

  • The song is 'The Snowman' it doesn't appear on any Tangerine Dream cd's, I picked up a dvd transfer on ebay, probably the best you are going to get, I asked Iain McKellan about it a few years ago and he doubted the release of a dvd ever coming about.

  • For the sake of clarity, the song is "The Snowman", but it is also called "Walking in the Air". It is, originally, from the cartoon "The Snowman", which is based on a children's story. Richie Blackmore's Rainbow recorded a version of the song for their album "Bent Out of Shape", circa 1982-83. Look up "Walking in the Air" on YouTube. You will find someone else has recorded a newer vocal version of the original song. I prefer the version in "The Keep".

  • Tangerine Dreams sure does some good 80-ish pianos and sounds, especially Risky Business with Tom cruise, if you didn't see it, i suggest you to see it.

  • Ganavon: F. Paul Wilson states in the prologue to same that the GRAPHIC NOVEL version of THE KEEP comes closest to matching his vision.

  • wish they would release this on dvd so powerful hope that i am not the only one who wishes this such awsome tones from tangerine dream been looking for this tune forever

  • please tell me where you got the sound track such awesome music.

  • Read all the books in the Adversary Cycle, for the full effect. "Molasar" is in all but the second and third of the six. They are: The Keep, The Tomb, The Touch, Reborn, Reprisal, and Nightworld. The last three were written as one long sequel to The Keep!

  • There was a fight scene between Glaeken Trismaegistus and Roderick Molasar which never made it to the final print because a key special effects wizard expired before he could put in the critical finishing touches.

  • Apparently this movie was a lot longer as well and the studio wanted it cut to bits and thus thats what happened...hope they bring out the "full" director's edition of The Keep on DVD...I will be waiting in line for my copy :D great movie..magic music thsnx

  • Wow, I wish this footage was in the original. Love this movie and have it on vhs but I wish a dvd would come out. Even though the movie didn't follow the book too well, this ending should have been in the original release....as this is basically how the book portrayed this event.

  • Thanks for posting this. This is like the Holy Grail for people who like this movie.

  • i thought the keep was made 1982 the snowman 1984

  • Snowman was 1982, Keep was 1983.

  • does any1 else think the theme sounds a little bit too much like the one form the animated "The Snowman"? "we're walkiing in the air" erm. Great filam tho, coincidentally i have watched it 5 times in the past 5 weeks getting a little obsessed tbh. Only looked on here since a friedn mentioned there was an alternative ending :E

  • it is Howard Blake's Snowman, redone by Tangerine Dream. They got permission.

  • oh? no way! lol thanks for your reply, at least now my faith has been restored! sample by permission ftw ;)

  • Thanks for sharing this! Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow did an awesome cover of SNOWMAN, too.

  • Search YouTube for "Rainbow Snowman", and one of the hits will be correct.

  • If the only reason this film isn't available is Michael Mann's opposition to its release, then that tells me he doesn't take his work seriously, at all. I hope he reads this and takes it to heart. We want The Keep!

  • This was really awesome to see. I believe this was the actual ending in the book.

  • Where did you get this from? I never even knew this ending existed but now i'm glad i did. I remeber watching this film for the first time and feeling sad when he gets sucked into The Keep but thanx for letting me see this ending. cheers ;)

  • Man that's cool, thanks for that.

You know, you just can't compare the quality of horror movies from the 80's to today. Today's horror flicks are utter garbage. Movies like The Keep really suck you out of reality and drop you in a Tangerine Dream. It's trip for the sober.

  • thnx 4 uploading!!

  • Interesting. Thanks for that. It's interesting the "myth" that has ccome up around this movie, which is partly why it's become so "cult" in the past 20 years - missing scenes, probalems with the soundtrack scoring, Director not wanting it released... no wonder people are intruiged by it! I hope it will see a dvd release. Mann needs to get real and release a director's cut, special edition with commentary and isolated scoring...

  • Appreciate this! This movie fascinates me, especially since the official release is badly edited and doesn't make much sense. This is just one of the cuts. There is also a scene at the end where they go off in a boat together.

  • I've seen stills from that ending boat scene. Some say it was never filmed, others say its on the editing room floor. Maybe it could be restored from a workprint if Paramount and Mann ever get the balls to release this movie.

  • me too! Very odd quality to the film.

  • Wow, beautiful! Thank you so much.

  • Visit the keep message board on imdb and there is a lead to a full high quality version of this, but only for 14 days from today
