  • Keep it angry Bruce!

  • This is the only time Bruce kinda saw God. And it's in no Karaoke book at all. Hey "Boss," why did you depart from this Path? Too Punk? Too Cool? His Irrelevancy doesn't know. :P

  • This is the only Bruce Springsteen song I actually like. The rest of his songs I actively avoid.

  • Capitol Theater , Passaic .NJ New years Eve 1978. Concert was booked for

Southside Johnny. Bruce was the afterparty surprise.

  • I'm not a big fan of Bruce either, only have maybe 7 of his songs stored on my car stereo/iTunes, but the live version of this song is one of them.

  • I'd say this musta been 20 September 1978 (or possibly '79). Anyway: Thanks for the upload, because Sony just about blocks nearly everything the 'Boss' ever did. If I didn't know better I'd probably swear Sony was trying to hurt themselves, or something.

  • @EagleMedieval 9/23/78; his 30th Birthday - see my post above..

  • the clue to the very negative post below is in the poster's name KING..DORK. don't give him the decency of a reply.

  • Masterpiece! This is why he is NJ's greatest musician..

    Such raw power...

  • Who is Fall Out Boy?

  • @KINGDINGLEDORK

Ha ha. Very funny. For a moment I almost thought you were serious.

  • he wrote because the night fucking dumbass he gave it to her he thought darkness on the edge of town would never come out so he gave some of the songs to other artist such as FIRE and because the night NOW go fuck yourself u teenage girl

  • @liamrocksmysockstm

He gave a lot of songs away because he wasn't legally allowed to record for three years but he cowrote Because the Night with PS, it wasn't pre-written then given to her.

  • @glammer Because the Night was 99.99% done and a demo recorded before Patty even heard the song. Jimmy Iovine (her producer) begged her to add a hit to her lame sounding album and she finally added her "contribution" of a couple of lines of verse and recorded the song. 'Co-wrote' is a huge stretch.

  • @GrafficGuy

I knew she wasn't exactly that bothered about it and Bruce seems to sing some different lyrics live but not 99.99%. Iovine seemed to do the same with Graham Parker's 'Endless Night', a really pointless "guest appearance" that did neither any favours.

  • @kindadork u are a big fool and knw nothing abourt bruce if u dnt like him then go away hey "why do u stick around and watch his videos....bruce put a black man on his album cover that album cover is called born to run one of the greatest roll albums ever made..

  • Was at the Boston show for this tour.......speechless watching this stuff again, amazing experience.

  • All I can say is.... WOW!

    Whatta song.

  • @KINGDINGLEDORK

Fist, I cant say i have listen tp any FOB song, perhaps some but they i didnt like em but everyone have the right to like what erver he and/or she want.

And sellout? I would say that's the last thing hi is.

And last, a racist? Not giving spotlite to "to the that black man"?Are you kidding? Clarence Clemons is the one member who get the most recognition and spotlight. His the "Big Man" he sings about in "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out",

  • @KINGDINGLEDORK you are so right. he should definately have showcased that spook playing the tambourine. tambourine solos are so great. you are a complete IDIOT. what are you like 12? are you really comparing one of the pioneers of rock to fk'n fall out fags? Sellout? He is one of the original bad boys. His music was/is original not a carbon copy of a hundred other wanna be's like fall out boy. Jesus Christ you are shallow.

  • FallOut Boy did it first and better.

  • @KINGDINGLEDORK I am confused by your post. Are you suggesting that Fall Out Boy did Candy's Room first and better?

  • @nedtaddei HELL YEAH!

  • @KINGDINGLEDORK Dude, this Springsteen video is from 1978... How old do you think your FOB boys were in 1978? Could possibly be the dumbest post I have ever seen.

  • good stuff here

  • This music nails the Northeastern US

  • YEP! YT! for posting,

  • pretty sloppy, pretty amazing

  • One of Bruce's best. Splendid.

  • For comment; a contrarian theory:

This song is actually about a guy who's fooling himself about Candy -- he's not one bit more closer than all the other guys Candy sees. But Candy has a way to make him feel so special that he believes that "What. She. Wants. Is... Me." Which of course, is Candy's magic.

What a brilliant song. The only bad thing about it is that it ends.

  • THE BEST

  • To the non-Bruce fan, this song's title makes it sound like a regular about-a-girl song. But listen to it, esp. the "Live 75-85" version, and this song will generate enough electricity to light a house. This song gets my blood going! Bruuuuce!

  • real.....

  • Hmm. How about we simply enjoy this for what it is... one of the most gorgeous Springsteen songs, and one that shows Little Steven at his best as well. O.K.?

fballx15, you got it in one.

  • Just over 3 minutes of heaven. All of my favourite songs are like that and leave you wanting more. The Boss is in my top 5 and of everything he has ever done " Candy's Room" comes out top. A crescendo of a song starting with double ride Hi Hat joined by a wonderful piano riff as the vocals begin. The song turns into a rollercoaster ride that is only broken up by a guitar solo that proves that true inspiration will always win over notes per second. And with lyrics which take you into his head.

  • I said he wouldn't play this then the drum started and got so excited. You were so adorable and fun.

  • A Great Moment In Rock and Roll.. I'll never forget the Capitol Theater. It was Jersey's Fillmore.

  • Yah, I never heard that -- but FOB owning metal is funny. They are just pop products that no one will care about come 2013. Enjoy them and revisit them in 2020. Sure, they are big now but don't say the own Metal, all real metal bands laugh at them, their image and what they stand for. FOB = Joke.

  • Fall Out Boy would probably give anything to be as good as Springsteen was then and is now, there is no way they will last as long as Springsteen. When FOB is releasing new albums 30 years from now then you can talk, maybe.

  • Great vid, wish more people know this song. LOVE it.

and on this topic, ironically, Springsteen's daughter (Jessica is her name, I think?) is a huge Fall Out Boy fan. I forgot where I heard it, but it was from a very credible source. Her and her father went to a show or two of the band's together.

  • @DJWROCKS I never heard one song by "Fall-Out Boy"---and don't ever care to. I have no idea who these new groups are. None of them compare to Springsteen, you're right! Old music is all I care about.

  • um...Springsteen in a legend... a classic. FOB is just one out of an entire lineup of completely manufactured bands. They are a trend, they will fade. Springsteen is like a LBD, he will never fade, he will never go out of style. His status of a legend will never diminish. Springsteen is a storyteller who evokes emotions and stirs up feelings in his listeners. FOB can barely string together a meaningful verse; at least not one which people will look back at in years and remember as having depth.

  • oooooooooooo rock en roll is back

  • This is Bruce & the boys at their peak! Bruce was and is a fantastic guitarist.

I'm sick of his political BS too even if I agree with most of his stands. How fucking bigoted to rip republicans too BTW. Fucking Dems are the same powerhungry bastards incapable of independant thought. Check out libertarian & other parties for independant thought.

I'd love at least one more oldschool record with the power, energy and passion of his first few albums again!

    Killer clip, thanks for sharing!

  • blistering white hot...why isnt this on any of his "greatest hits"?

  • Live 1975-1985 is sort of a 'greatest hits' isn't it?

  • I get chills...

... "in Candy's room there are pictures of heroes on the wall.."

Such raw emotion here, it brings me to tears.

  • i am i the only one who thinks bruce is very underated as a guitarist?

  • No, you are not the only one. Bruce has an amazing feel for the guitar, his bends are unique and he controls the dynamics exactly as he does with his singing, song arrangements, and his band. Not to forget he's also playing great rhythm while singing AND playing leads and fills. Back in 1970 he was known as THE guitar player at the shore - more so than his singing. He canned the big Les Paul/Marshall stack sound when he turned to a more folk/Van Morrison/Dylan/The Band sound.

  • Nope - many people do. Which is of course strange, as one only has to look back at some of his live concerts from the 70s and 80s to see he can most certainly handle his axe.

  • Goddam that is badass!

  • let the man speak up! no one should be put down for saying the things they believe in! not in these times, not in the free world!

  • bruce has always been a political figure. born in the usa is a critical diatribe. listen to the intro to the river from live 1975-1985. he's always been a political guy and its been a part of the stuff hes created. how could you have such a perspective on the working-class struggle and be a republican in this era? whether you agree with his politics or not, you can't deny that he's 1. always been political and 2. understandably liberal given his background and perspective.

  • who the fuck cares about his politics he needs to shut the fuck up and just play music

  • You're correct it was 7/8/81 at the Meadowlands from live 3 cd set.

  • Bruce still at his best. Bums me out he ditched music for political preaching.

GREAT CLIP!! Don't know where you got this thing but it's 100% platinum treasure! Born to Run & Darkness on the Edge of Town were, are and always will be 2 seminal records in rock history, epic in sound and breadth.

Damn...forgot just how much energy they gang used to have. Unbridled, sheer rock & roll joy...

Much thanks for sharing this jewel!

  • Good sound Quality with this version. I wonder if its the track talen for his 3 cd live set 1975- 85?

  • no it is not, that version, which i believe to be the absolute best version in the universe was recorded at meadowlands arena in July of 1981

  • sans doute une de ses plus belles chansons !! un titre de l'opus de 1978 que j'adore !! vive le Boss !

  • this breaks my heart to hear/see I remember being 15 and loving this song-bittersweet, I guess...Almost as much as "because the night" by patty smith or "Thunder Road"

  • eveything in Darkness sounds great..

  • Never was a big Springsteen fan, but this song is superb. And Bruce plays the hell out of his Telecaster. Bravo!

  • Terrible, dévastateur, absolument poétique, un des 5 ou 6 meilleurs thèmes du Boss sans aucun doute !!!!

  • Man!Bruce can play that tele!

  • pretty much my favorite song ever.

  • wow, this is what I love about Youtube...we are lucky to have this. Just thought of this song, hadn't heard it in ages, and then like that find this video. I am not even like a huge Bruce fan, but I have to say he is one of America's top poets and songwriters. This song is so emotional, and like a lot of Bruce's stuff just gets down to the soul of what its like to grow up in America. Praise the Boss!

Plus I dig seeing Stevie and Max there too.

  • @robuyube Live, Passaic, NJ, 9/23/73; his 30th birthday; broadcast live on FM up & down the Eastern seaboard via Starfleet radio; I still have the recording...

  • i love this song. makes me think about how my life is in candy room!

  • ignorante, non capisci un po un cazz!

  • You're deaf.

  • I agree....as long as "bad" means "awesome"

  • CANDY"S ROOM

  • 1st Song of the Boss - he is a Genious

  • Bruce's finest -- hee hee

    Candy

  • Indeed :)

  • One of Bruce's best, as well as one of my favorite love songs -- the passion and frustration oozing from the lyrics, music and delivery is almost TOO intense to bear. Thanks for posting it!

  • One of the ultimate Sprinsteen-classics!

  • i pity you boy because you cannot see the truth. go post on another site. if you don't like him then why are you fascinated with writing comments about him? hmmmmmm.....

  • oldchevyw; It takes one to know one, and you know 'em all. I don't believe the shit about chevy, you Ford-humpin' MF

  • hey 'oldchevyw'.....you beat up old chevy piece of shit......I'm glad to have Bruce tunes hit the G spot every time......idiot. You are right about one thing......he's got tons of hits comin' out his ass. Go suck on a tailpipe while us Boss assholes revel in his shitty masterpieces..........you friggin' wing nut.

  • Bruce es Dios, en Spain pensamos lo mismo. Great songggg!!!!!

    Thank you!

  • Golden.

  • one word: GOOSEBUMPS!

  • What an amazing songwriter and performer, and major props to the E street band! This song is beautiful, epic, and immensely powerful!

  • I remember watching him on Midnight Special back in like '76 and while I FELL IN LOVE that night, I knew that at the time, people outside the tri-state area would NEVER understand either the lyrics or the locations he sang about...good thing I was wrong! Rock on Bruce...I saw ya in Jersey summer of '99 and baby you still got it!!

  • She says baby if you wanna be wild you got a lot to learn, close your eyes

Let them melt let them fire let them burn

`cause in the darkness therell be hidden worlds that shine

When I hold candy close she makes these hidden worlds mine...

    VERY BTFL..

  • i love this song

  • Great song, and mostly unknown. Done back when Bruce was great.

  • still great ... the rising =D

  • Jumped the shark when he started putting Scialfa on stage with him. She sucked him dry.

  • "putting Scialfa on stage with him. She sucked him dry"

    Agree! Agree!

Pity enough, he told her when she was very underage that she could come back to him when she was a bit older.. and she did! (and was also clever enough to do a music study in the mean while)

  • Where are ya, Maloney? I know you've seen this... Damn, this brings back memories!

  • So, here are some die-hard fans?

I wanna know.. does somebody know what I mean with the performance in which he fainted while doing (if my memory works well) Rosalita?

  • I remember back in Sept. '79 at Madison Square Garden in NYC "No Nukes Concert"....(I was there one night) where he "pretended" to faint during one of the encores. I don't remember if it was during Rosalita. Is this what you're referring to?

  • Maybe!.. I gues so..

    Thanx for the reply!

(gonna search further... now I know there are more fans who know what I meant.. cool!)

  • sjakdotpunt: While you're here on youtube, type Springsteen Quarter To Three....in the search bar. This is an old Gary U.S. Bonds tune. This is where Bruce "pretends" to faint, at the NO Nukes Concert in New York. Hope this is what you were searching for..........I'm a prisoner................of ROCK & ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yes!!!

    That's what I meant!

    Thanx! Thank u so much!

So cool to see that back.. all the nrg...

omg, had that concert on vhs, was in my teens... u dont wanna know how often I almost crawled into the tele 4 watching it.

    Thanx!

  • I love this song

  • bruce rocks...the anthem of my youth.

    bernie p./akron ohio

  • This one kicks! Been back a few times and will be back a few more!

  • grat song from the boss!! one of my favourites!

  • this reminds me of eating candy in my room 3 muskateers were my favorite

  • Ah, the Darkness Days. '78 was a very good year for Bruce fans.

  • to "1bossfan": I couldn't agree more. I'm a life long South Jersey native. I have this concert on VHS, and also on 8-track, if you can believe that. Used to listen to it every day when I was 17, back in '78, in my fathers '66 Mustang. My girlfriend thought I was nuts. She once said, "You'll be sick of this soon". Well, its been almost 30 yrs since that comment, and I guesss I'm still nuts. Rock on 1bossfan to another.

  • this is unquestionably the best version of this song every

  • The boss captures the essence of the youthfull rebel heart and his misic is eternal!

  • Damn!

  • What a song! What an album! This song reminds me of lying on my bed and listening to this CD (when CD's first came out) in total darkness and getting lost in these stories. Ahh, Bruce.

  • hell yes. Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuce!

  • i love it, his most underrated song.

  • Oh how I miss the Capital Theater. Those were the day's. Everyone played there. Boss rocks.

  • Makes sense. I've got a bootleg boxed set of Passaic '78 on vinyl.

  • I think it's Sept 1978 if it's Passaic. It's made the rounds as a Brucelag favorite by many. Regardless of video quality, it should be released. This was also broadcast on radio at the time, clips of which have been played on FM radio in the late 70s and early 80s. Hopefully better quality footage exists out there, because the Darkness and River tours were pretty awesome. The Born in the USA and Tunnel of Love tours have tons of footage.
