Wrong. There arer various dialects of Japanese. Learning another dialect is like learning a new language. So in a sense, there are various versions of Japanese.

If you talk to someone on the other side of the States, they could have a different accent and use different slang, but they're still understandable. ^^

Each Japanese dialect has different words.

For example the Kansai-ben(Osaka) uses the word 'ahou' for the word 'stupid.' Where as Tokyo uses 'baka.'

The same word can have a different meaning if you are in another part of Japan.

The thing that can help you, is that most pop-culture in Japan is used in Kansai-Ben, so it most people can understand what Osakans are saying.
