there are some true tards about! 99 percent fail because the coolant system insnt serviced properly or have been ragged witless .dont blame the k series mines just clocked up 92k and my dads has got 146k on oe head gasket!
And so goes the way of all Rovers. When the last Rover is towed to the scrap yard, the world will be a better place. (My 416 went the same way this piece of shit did, so I know from experience what happens to these things.)
rover=head gasket faliure, this cars probably being driven to the bone yard. the k-series rover engines are the last of the modern cars to actually need regular servicing ( ok all cars do)
you need to check the coolant levels every couple of days etc... these engines started out life as 1.1 amd 1.3 units and were rebored to make them bigger, but little was done with regards to the cooling system, so you have a small cooling system on a high powered engine...
The larger engined k-series weren't "bored out" at all but had a longer throw on the piston which had essentially the same effect as a larger bore.
Dont get me wrong, the k-series are notorious for hgf, as mine has just gone....but when they run they are amazing engines and have loads of power for such a small engine.
yea theres plenty of power in some of them, a mate had a 214 sli twincam 103bhp, very quick for a 1400 but head gasket went at 42k mind you he was heavy footed, my niece has just had the head go on her 2004 mr rover 1.4 at 48k and has been told its already gone once before from the garage..it gets worse my uncle has the 1.8zr and the head blew he has just paid out £1700 for another engine to find out the water pump has also gone, his is also a 2004 model bought new
I saw a complete tosser in an MG-ZR 1.8 blow his head gasket! He was using a busy 40Mph Dual carridgeway like a race track cutting inappropriately in and out of lanes in front of traffic. Later on, 5 miles down the motorway he was on the hard shoulder with his bonnet up steam going everywhere and kicking 7 bells of crap out of it!
rovers have this problem, i had a 1999 rover 400 1.6i and at bout 80,000 miles the head gasket blew. apparently its common on rovers (even tho the engine is honda)
not tottaly true coz the head gasket can allow water into the engine which would make it smoke like that i would know this as my dad had been a motor mechanic for near on 40 years and i am also a motor mechanic too;)
on my pug205 i dont know if its the had gasket or a cylinder problem but its using alot of coolant over the past week, loss of power wen pulling away, but i dont get any white smoke (steam) from the backbox. ive noticed slight oil in my coolant which makes me think its the head gasket, could u help me out?
Well actualy, it lets the antyfreeze get in the bore and will wet you spark plug and make a bunch of smoke and eventualy stall just like my kawasaki did a week ago. Thought I blown the engine but it was only the head gasket but i still rebuilted the whole top end. lol
i have recently done my head gasket on my rover 220 coupe everything went well until i did a oil change afta fixing gasket i used a semi synth 10 40w afta 20 mins of ticking over thick white smoke bailed out n i mean thick could it be the oil change or is it still the gasket
Legendary British Rover quality indeed.. Very common fault also in Land Rover Freelander 1.8 (Rover K-series engine) - happens also in "well-serviced" and maintained cars. How might the situation be with the Chinese Roewe?

k series rover engine is a great little engine, used in a lot of track day cars, only reason head gaskets go on them is because they are not properly maintained.
@joshuaking3090 Rovers have the shittiest engines ever? The K series is a very strong and reliable engine,the only reason head gaskets fail is because people don't look after them,and service them properly. I have had three Rover 214's (one is my current car),and they have all been an utter delight,1000's of miles without a single problem.A very solid car with high levels of comfort.

K-Series Engine are amazing engines, Just one vital Flaw was the Engine block being made from Steel and the Head gasket being made from alloy.

@Boeing757basher07 No,the whole engine is made of alloy.

no it's not a honda engine, yours is still a k series
racer4ever30 2 years ago
is it? the interior etc was identical to the honda accord of the same year and i knew some rovers had honda engines so i presumed it was a honda unit

Naff maintenance leads to this, it's rare to have a "random failure".
Checking coolant and oil regularly will catch any issues that will lead to problems in most cases.
mattyprice4004 3 years ago
isnt it true if its headgasket that the smoke coming out will smell like burning oil? and its white or blueish color?
wofobo 3 years ago
normally the sign of a head gasket failure or burnt out piston ring will leave a blue smoke
white smoke normally can indicate a inlet manifold seal gone or can also be the headgasket
simple thing to remember
white smoke = h2o
blue = oil
black = fuel

I understand the problem is fixed. In fact I believe that MG Rover had a solution but never got round to applying it to their cars.
