  • I think we can ALL relate to this now.

  • Pause it at 1:00 it says Jay Leno was on the show....

  • It's good to know I am not the only one who likes lsitening to tv sitcom theme songs. It brings back memories!

  • thats cabrini green on da north side its all toe down now real projects nawmeen

  • Very apropo for the times .... "keepin' your head above water / makin a wave when you can / temporary layoffs (GoodTimes) / Easy credit rip offs (GoodTimes) ...." uncanny

  • "Hanging out and jiving" would be much better.

  • You know, I could totally hear "chow line", but after reading that the line is supposed to be "hanging in and jiving", I listened carefully and can totally hear that line now lol. I thought this was a good show, and it created the atmosphere so realistically.

  • OMG...it does sound like "hanging in and jiving"...lol. I like that better than "chow line"

  • Not sure about the show itself, although its heart was in the right place, but that is a *damned* fine theme song.

  • what's up with the alternating upper and lower case? Are you such a unique person?

  • BeST shoW eVeR..why u tHiNk iT ShOwZ everyday?

  • hanging in a what? I never understood that line...

  • hahahaha.

i watched this only because of the Chappelles show.

it asks people what is that part.

it's actually "hangin in a chow line."

  • "chow line" = soup kitchen line. alot of people think a chow line is a lynching...

  • Anyone else notice Jay Leno as "the young man" in the closing credits?

  • this show is horrible

  • if jimmie walker could fuck, im fucking everybody

  • The guy riding his bike is cool! He is the coolest!

  • I used to LOVE this show! Ahhh, the memories!

  • LOL: Per Wikipedia, the theme song writers actually claim that the infamous "hanging in a chow line" lyric is actually "hanging in and jivin'"

I dunno - it really does sound more like "hanging in a chow line" to me.

But, the voice of the lady that sings the line seems a bit slurred - that may be the problem.

  • haha this is like one of my favorite tv shows idk why

  • hanging in a chow line!

    good times indeed.

  • chead!!tosco

  • hangin in a jury!

  • look-in outa da window , watch-in da asphalt grow! ---

hanging in a chow line/ so many peps don't ? that lyric.

  • o she said hangin in the chow lines ooo

  • i'll admit it. "hangin' in a chowline"? wondered all the time growin up what the fuck that line was...

  • yeah w/e weve all seen chappelle

  • speak for yourself man. i've never seen an entire episode myself.

  • Hanggin in a chow line? Ooooh; that's what that line is. I've always wondered.

I was just typing a comment to ask what that line is.

  • chow line = soup kitchen. alot of people think it refers to being hanged but that is wrong...

  • LOL, you have to be slow to think it means being hung. I just couldn't understand the words.

  • Ghostface killah sampled this..good stuff bra.

  • hanging in a chow line xD

  • The GoodTimes Show was DINOMITE

  • Temporary Layoffs?! That ain't Good Times!

    Hella catchy song, though....

  • Depending on where you work at, lol...

  • i'm 18 and i love this show!!

  • there always seems to be a lot of racist remarks towards white people in this show...black people are forever putting the blame on white people..i don't understand this...why don't they be productive

  • I think your last sentence pretty much answers your first point.

  • "there always seems to be a lot of racist remarks towards white people in this show"

BTW, this show's producers and the majority of its writers were WHITE.

So, you're barking up the wrong tree Kimosabe.

  • THE WRITERS OF THE SHOW WERE WHITE! So if there were racial comments, it was the fault of the white writers who wrote the scripts. You can't generalize all blacks by making it seem as though they blame whites for their issues. Do you blame yourself or your teacher for not being able to put a sentence together correctly? Who did you blame for being an idiot when you didn't pay attention in school?

    Your stupidity reigns supreme!

  • aint we lucky we got em...!!!..

  • temporary layoffs

  • Thanks for including the closing credit theme, most of the time watching this it was stepped-on by network voice-overs.

  • Did Yall see Jay Leno in the credits at 1:00 ? wow

  • those were the good times. i got a tear in my eye!

  • I agree..me too

  • Always thought Hanging in a chow line too, but its actually Hangin in and jiving!!! Ask the ones that wrote the song Alan & Marilyn Bergman. Yeh I know how to use Wikipedia and smoke blunts at the same time, LOL....

  • Love this song!

  • I have a tear in my eye... that was magnificent! Beautiful!

  • Hanging in a chow line !!!

  • GOOD-TIMES is recorded on tape b4 a live audiance ....lol

  • aint we lucky we got em.......GOOD TIMES

  • Would've liked to See The PITS Films logo,of course,it's hard to find.

  • Live forever Good Times, live forever :)

  • interesting, mike evans[all in the family co-created''good times''and janet dubois wrote ''the jeffersons''theme song as well sang it.

  • Jay Leno in the closing credits?

  • Oh yes. This was the episode JJ thought he caught VD from a girl he was dating, and when he went to the clinic, Jay was one other patient waiting to be seen. He did have a few speaking parts.

  • Was he famous when this was made Pplscrt79?

  • Not really. He had some other parts later on, but no, he wasn't really famous at that time.

  • I wasn't that big of a fan of the show after they killed James off.

  • those buildings are Cabrini Greens just to let yall know

I use to stay there wit ma auntie when my mom had to goto work.

    We lived in Algrid Gardens

  • Didn't those buildings get torn down because of how run down the community was?

  • Those were the Cabrini Green projects. Most of the buildings were torn down in the early 2000s.

  • Yeah I read a few books back in the early nineties on the Chicago projects. Very poor maintenance and the tenants really had to fight for a lot to effect change.

Rachel and Her Children was one book and There Are No Children Here was the other book.

Drugs, violence, crime you name it. Pretty freaky for the projects. I wonder if the worse parts of Chicago have improved since then or is it the same old same old.

  • search for Cabrini Green on youtube.

  • Will look it up thanks.

  • No frikkin way!!! :D

    Lucky...

  • no its hagin in the chow line

  • I always thought it was "hangin in a jury" when I was young lad, then on I KNOW BLACK PEOPLE they said "chow line" but the writers of the show have made it clear that it's "Hangin and jivin" or however u spell it. Always interesting to learn something new about a show that I grew up watching.

  • I never saw this show, but after watching the Dave Chappell episode with the "I know black people" game, I wanted to hear the theme song :)

  • Can anyone tell me the ghostface song that he did off this

  • Thanks for posting this !

  • What happened to the father in this show. I remember they said he died. Did he really die. Wasn't he the owner of the fake McDonalds in Coming to America?

  • > What happened to the father in this show

"Once focused on the importance of family values, the show was shifting more and more toward the silly antics of Jimmie Walker, who was becoming a runaway hit on the show as the aimless, egotistical, jive-talking teenage son JJ. John began frequently clashing with the higher-ups and, by 1976, was released from the series, with his character being killed in an off-camera car accident while finding employment out of state."

  • In fact John Amos is still alive and well and still acting. I think his most recent role was in Men In Trees. He was also previously on The West Wing. But yeah, I remember only saying Good Times was only worth watching if John Amos was in it. He was soooooo funny!

  • I love this show!

  • Notice how in the opening credits, the Reds are surrounded by grass, then in the end credits they're surrounded by asphalt. "Looking out of the window, watching the asphalt grow". I used to watch this show all the time as a kid, and that didn't hit me until now. RIP Cabrini-Green. Hope the residents all find better lives.

  • isnt it kinda creepy the asphalt overgrew itself...i wish the best to the families that lost their homes what a waste...

  • I gotta tell ya'll. I had serious jungle fever for the women who played Willona. That would have been good times indeed!

  • is that cabrini green where they live?

  • yeah, they live in cabrini green. Anyone notice in the end credits that Jay Leno played the young man.

  • that's the v.d. episode.[note the eboney magazine has ''the jeffersons''on the cover.]

  • this my show!!

  • CLOSING THEME LYRICS Mmmmmm Just lookin' out of the window. Watchin' the asphalt grow. Thinkin' how it all looks hand-me-down. Good Times, yeah, yeah Good Times Keepin' your head above water Makin' a wave when you can Temporary lay offs. - Good Times. VOICE-OVER spoken by John Amos: Good Times was recorded in front of a live studio audience Easy credit rip offs. - Good Times. Ain't we lucky we got 'em - Good Times.
  • OPENING THEME LYRICS Good Times. Any time you meet a payment. - Good Times. Any time you need a friend. - Good Times. Any time you're out from under. Not getting hassled, not getting hustled. Keepin' your head above water, Making a wave when you can. Temporary lay offs. - Good Times. Easy credit rip offs. - Good Times. Scratchin' and surviving. - Good Times. Hangin in a chow line - Good Times. Ain't we lucky we got 'em - Good Times.
  • In an interview last year the writers of the song said "Hangin' in a chow line" is incorrect -- it's actually "Hanging in and jiving" ;)

  • That was the one line I could NEVER figure out what on earth it was. I just copied and pasted those lyrics from the TV Land site. LOL!

  • F the kid with his black power fist salute.

  • JAMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the intro is longer than that. thats' the suckass syndication intro. cut to shit

  • Is the Title meant to be ironic? 'Cause it looks like Shit Times living in the ghetto.

Anyone ever live there? Is this show realistic? - coz I can't imagine anyone being happy living like this. Why would you bother? Why not take off for the open land or another country? - Ghettoes look barely better than hell!

  • In hard times, we like to celebrate the Good Times.

That "hell" you speak of produces beautiful and stronger people.

And yes, this show is a classic of American TV.

  • Hard times are good for the character - but really who would want to be there - why not go live in the country? Cities were a good idea thousands of years ago when they were small - say 100,0000 people - but megalopolis is just not natural - it's a shit life. (Of course the world now has an overpopulation problem, so to some extent it's unavoidable.)

    Truly these are Bad Times!

  • 100,000 not 1000,000

  • if people had that kind of money to up and buy a house in the country, they probably wouldnt be living in public housing.

  • Well, that's kind of the point. Public housing was all the could afford.

  • i luv my ghetto...its so quiet XD

  • cabrini green!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Classic Bass line from a time when guitar players would fight over the bass position.

  • who told you that? cuz that aint true

  • can anyone remember the child abuse episode regarding the iron and fade to commercial?

  • Isn't that the episode that resulted in Penny (Janet Jackson)being a regular cast member?

  • thanks for your response. i had posted this message about 4 times over past year to see if anyone could remember it! i am not sure if it resulted in miss jackson joining but it is the episode that sticks out the most. very touchy topic for 1970's comedy...

  • If you remember the School of Rock movie, Jack Black sang part of that tune after his date with the principal.

  • The female voice on the song was Motown artist Blinky Williams, her most well known song was "I Wouldn't Change The man He Is" in 1968

  • its song by bookman, and willona, 4rm the show

  • That's not true, but it is funny!

  • Yes i love this song, I use it for the start of my dj sets when I play at clubs. Good Times .. ain't we lucky we got 'em !!

  • Yes i love this song, I use it for the start of my dj sets when I play at clubs. Good Times .. ain't we lucky we got 'em !!

  • Norman Lear was a fucking genius....I mean who the hell is writing shows today cuz they all suck ass!!!

  • At the end of the song, I always thought it was "If we're lucky, we've got 'em"! LOL

  • WHO SINGS THIS SONG?

  • I think Janet Dubois sings it. She's the woman who played Willona (and she also played in "I'm Gonna Get You, Sucka!". She wrote both the theme songs to "Good Times" and "The Jeffersons".

  • Does that mean someone is hung in a jury? lol

  • Please post more Good Times opening theme songs (like the one where they show the cast members, etc)

  • Is it -Hanging in and jivin-or -Hanging in a chow line?

  • Hanging In A Chow Line!!!

  • LOL this is the most disputed lyric of the entire song. In fact the correct line is "hangin in a jury" I had to look it up myself.

  • no its "hanging in a chow line"

    when u sing the song

"hanging in a jury" dont even sound ryte

i been watching the show for years

    i kno the song

  • nope its jury.

  • no its chow line.

i have the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd season on dvd

the lyrics are on the back

dont even try and argue wit me

cuz i kno whut im talkin bout!

  • nope. Its jury.

  • no its not!

  • I'm guessing you haven't seen the Chappelle's Show segment on this.

  • Awesome show!

  • I love the theme song.

  • At 1:00 Jay Leno's name rolls on the credits. This IS the episode where JJ thought he had VD. JJ talks to Jay Leno at the clinic.

  • "Hangin in a chow line" is the actual line. Dave Chapelle did a sketch about it. lol.

  • yes rlsroyce ur right

this was filmed in Cabrini Green Projects

  • Hangin' in a jury!

  • it doesnt matter what color your skin is, but if your out there stuggling you can relate to this show, and its nice to see people on tv struggling, not everyone is rich or well educated

  • this episode was on this morning, where jj thought he caught vd and jay leno talked to him in the clinic

  • The housing projects were called cabrini green in chicago. The straight hood.

  • Those buildings were projects in Chicago. My cousin lives there and when i went to chi town she drove us to where those projects were and they are tearing those down to make aparments for the rich.

  • My grandma said she did not like this show when it came out because it showed how blacks lived in the projects and how they had welfare. And not all blacks were on welfare and lived in the projects. My grandma wasn't

  • The Evans wasn't on welfare. It's not about skin color it's showing how some people have to struggle in order to survive. It showed you could have love and family values even if you live in the ghetto.

  • Well they made up for it with the "Cosby Show". Most people don't have a doctor and lawyer as parents lol.

  • We have Good Times here in Canada. It's on Dejaview!

  • Was that jay leno's name in the closing credits?

  • I watched this show in re runs in the 1980's it was good then and it is good now. Everything does look hand me down.

  • kid dynomite!!!!!!!!!!!

  • y was the show called good times if they always had crappy times

  • It's a play on words...sarcasm if you will...if you listen to the words of the opening song, they describe all kinds of hards ships followed by "Good times, ain't we lucky we got 'em" So it's like sarcasm.

  • mang i luv dis show! DyNOMITE!

  • "Goodtimes was re-corded on tape, before a live studio audiance LOL

  • hangin in a jury

  • I'm pretty sure it's "Hanging in a chow line."

  • oh thx, it sounds like hangin in a jury. But when u listen closely i think you're right.

  • hangin' in a chow line.

  • hangin' in a chow line.

  • Jay LENO? Holy crap, never knew that.

  • dats the show!!!!!!!!

  • Ah, childhood memories.

    Great tune.

    Thanks for posting.

  • wow the momories of this show bring me back.

  • It is so awesome that you included the closing in that. TV Land always advertises their other damn shows during closing credits, and that pisses me off. They should play closing themes to their shows because they really add to the nostalgia, which would have bigger audiences watching. Such an advertisement would be worth much more than that obnoxious TV Land voice just talking about other shows.

I love the Good Times theme. Dave Grusin was a real musician with a lot of good stuff.

  • I just noticed... no question marks in my post for a lit. major I suck at grammer...

  • I saw Jay Leno in the credits... when was he on the show - like what episode... I like seeing his older stuff..

  • He was in the episode "J.J. in Trouble". J.J. thinks he has a venereal disease and goes to a clinic to get checked out. Leno's the young man he talks to.

  • cool... thanx... i need to watch this how more often...

my favorite eps. are the ones with sweet daddy williams...

  • man those are some shitty shots of chicago.. did they have to film that on an overcast day? :P

  • Its just the way it has been uploaded, on television its much clearer.

  • what do you expect it was 1974!

  • In 1974, before the advent of unleaded gasoline and catalytic converters, are you sure it wasn't a SMOGGY day?

  • whatt???

  • what, there weren't sunny days in Chicago until the 80s?

  • no the cameras weren't as good!

  • Probably not. Ha, when I was growing up outside of NYC in the early '70s, air pollution in all our cities was ridiculous-- when I hear people screaming about what they consider "pollution" TODAY, it just makes me laugh. Except for when they refer to what now passes for our culture.
