I love this song. Check a cover version in a bar from two dudes who are trying to focus on the song while a wino is showing his appreciation a bit too much. Just type The Subway Cowboys The bottle let me down...
Sounds fine to me (and I do have a few songs on myspace) His "Live at Billy Bob's" DVD from a few years ago has the whole band with Norman on slide. Its tight, melodic, got a BIG fat sound, priceless. My MOST favorite concert DVD in my collection, for the music, for the tributes, everything. I hope Merle lives forever, and if not I wanna be near his cell doin' time in heaven. :-)
I have seen him and can say his voice and ability to pick his ol' guitar hasn't declined, he still can play with the best of them and sing very well. This video doesn't do him justice not only because of it being bootlegged but also his tele is a little out of tune and has a bit too much distortion in comparison to that clean, hard biting sound he usually has. His guitar playing can rival Clapton's and BB's when he's on.
looks a bit ill i read the post about meds and lung cancer, etc but it seems the cash flow let him down not the bottle little hard after all the years , should have + could have had a few weeks off re coup but thanks for the post.
He's STILL great. Saw him and Loretta Lynn in Milwaukee in a small venue about a month ago. Had dead center seats, lower level about 20 feet from the stage. They were both GREAT. Loretta's son and grand-daughters (the Lynns) also performed.
Yes he has lost a lot of his voice. But he is still a great singer and his body of work, as they say, can stand with anybody's in the history of the music.
That's an illegitimate statement. This video is no indication of his voice. As far as his playing is concerned, even Clapton has admitted that he can tell that he isn't as fast as he used to be. Problem with listening to bootleg video is that the vocals lose pitch as they travel and so it can sound off pitch at times and there are other factors, as well but not enuff space here to post it all. Read my other post, also saw him with Bob Dylan 2 yrs ago. He was better than Dylan (one of my faves)
His guitar playing ability is still awesome. His telecaster was out of tune with too much distortion in much of this concert. He and BB are two of the finest living old school pickers around. Why don't you watch some videos with he and Kris Kristofferson, months after this.
hey incorruptablr i have thought that before but then i listen to george before his wreck in 99 and when he is on like i say that perfect mixture and no Merle is not better they have two styles but I like George better.
That's a pretty dumb comment to make on a Merle video. I too put Jones up there with the best of all time - he might be THE best of all time, but to say anybody could make the great Merle sound like a pub singer is, well, pretty dumb.
Well listen to Merle is right. Merle just had lung surgery a month before for cancer. Dont knock someone that has enough guts to keep on trying. I agree with mka800 you are dumb.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
George Jones is the very finest of all country singers---makes Merle Haggard sound like a pub singer.
