I saw Harry 4 times in concert and he was ALWAYS better live..........he was just so full of life and loved what he was doing it just poured out of him, he always stayed after to sign autographs and talk to his fans. He played for 3 stright hours at Pine Knob after the afternoon act ran long and it put him late starting his show..........he left the stage for only 3 songs and he was so horace by the end, yet he save Sniper for next to last! WOW! How I miss him!
I heard this song and I instantly fell in love. It made me smile from ear to ear, and it's one of the very definitions of truely great music of the ages. Thank you so much for putting this up, it means alot.
what I find so great is that his family has continued his charity by still giving half of the money that his music generates to it.The one thing that we can all agree on is that we miss him and all the music he might have written. I was surprised to find out that many of his songs were based on Sandy's poems, like Tangled Up Puppet and Cat's In the Cradle. she even helped on songs about his past girlfriends. Amazing, isn't it/
Well, It feels good to be put in one's place. You know the old cliche," You learn something new everyday" I guess I did in this case! Thanks for the info. I grow up listening to him, I miss him :(
Hello, He did not die of a heart attack! He was killed on the Long Island expressway by a Truck hitting him from behind. He was on his way to his own Concert in Long Island, NY. Where did you get your information?
@TheVulcan321 He had a heart attack which is most likely the cause of the accident. He drove into the path of a truck during the ordeal. The official cause of death is cardiac arrest. It's on Wikipedia with citing and numerous news story. The road accident was a result of a heart attack.
my dad always used to play this piece on the piano and i always felt a strange melancholy come over me. i never quite understood the song but i felt it.
now, years later, listening to it, feeling the words, understanding them and letting them mingle with my own experiences of dreaming, being in love... it's a powerful song, this one. it hits all the notes of memory that make me fly through the times when i really, truly and genuinely, wished time could just freeze.
I am so thankful to my family for making Harry Chapin's music a part of my life. I have often cried to this song and as I have been blessed with a daughter it has just become more amazing to hear this song.
It's a happy tune punctuated by whistling but it's a sad story about how he never got around to realizing any of his dreams ( he wanted to be a ball player, he wanted to be a painter ).
She wanted to be a doctor but he ended her dream by marrying her.
It's actually kind of depressing if you pay attention to the lyrics.
@westeightyone --I think you miss the point. No, they never became painters, ball players, dancers, etc. But they had a wonderful life together and built a beautiful family. There dreams did come true. They just didn't realize it!
@pamelot5 - 2bh i always saw it half and half, lol. They didn't do the things they wanted in life, but it wasn't as bad as it could of been since they had each other lol.
1 thing we can all agree on Harry Chapin was amazing, and that this song, along with his other songs are brilliant.
One of the greatest story tellers with his music. He always loved to perform for his fans, and most of his proceeds went to charity

Harry Chapin died in a car accident- I like the fact you are honoring him and I love this song, but at least get his life story right

@g5pigott
He died of a heart attack while driving. They don't know if the heart attack came before or after he was hit.
BuynFiyh 1 year ago
@g5pigott Both correct -- he had a car crash, but the autopsy showed he died due to a heart attack.
