its john's conscious. first of all, john neglects his conscious the whole game. whether you are good or bad he only has his own goal in mind, and allows people he knows are bad (abraham reyes) to succeed. also, this quest is not availible to jack marston, which suggests that this man has a personal connection to john. which implies its john's conscious. if it were death it would be availible to both jack and john because death sees no difference
he is the devil not death death is not sinister he only does his job of gathering souls the devil is cynical and tends to trick people into sin . which is why he says i wish my boy turns out just like you satans son , just like john which kills so easily
@hemir9 then why ask john to help people? Deaths only job is to collect the souls of the dead. Seems like he is the devil. Wants his son to be like him? The Antichrist. Makes sense to me.
it could be God. during the scene with the nun, john says "ain't it the Lord's responsibility to look over his flock?". that's when the nun says "but the Lord has brought you to me". this could be a reference to the stranger telling john to visit the nun.
If any of you have read the bible, the locations you meet the man in, are very similar to the locations satan attempt to tempt Jesus. Just thought I might point that out.
Hes obviously death "I'm an accountant" obviouse reference to death. And when he fired his gun the first 2 shots fired and the 3rd one jammed refering to John and his wife dieing and Jack living(he represents the 3rd bulet.)
@Demonccm2 :D HAHAAA!! YEP!! I saved my game (campfire) near him an pushed him off a lot lmao me an a few mates we drinkin so we pushed him off them cliffs over an over again hahaa it took awhile to stop being funny
He's not "God" or "Satan" or any other "Good vs. evil" mythology character. He's too neutral. He assigns John missions where he has a clear choice to make. He doesn't try to influence John's choices.
At the end of the day, I suppose he's whoever you want him to be. But the whole point is he's something that John can't possibly understand fully while he's still alive.
The fact that Johns last encounter with the man is at the place where he will be taking his dirt nap does seem to support the idea that he is the Reaper. But, as some have already said, he may be the visual representation of Johns moral conscience. The possibilities are endless with this guy!
and by the way, This is a spoiler of the Dark Tower novel----
The men in black is not human, maby he was a long time ago, but now is something like an essence in a human body. The men in black exist in all the worlds in several times, so there will be another men in black in this world. Sorry about double post but this can help you with your theories.
Red dead redemption take a lot of references from the "Dark Tower" novels by Stephen King. For example, the name of "John Marston" cames from "John Farson" called the good man in the middle world. In this series, the gunslinger follows a strange "Men in black" who have a lot of names like "The Dandi" This men have some paranormal skills, for example he's able to see the future, read minds and ignore the guns fire. I think this men in black here is another reference to Stephen King's Dark Tower.
Yea at first I thought he was a ghost too but I think he's death specially the last time you talk to him. But I can also see him being a reflection of john and his past and present life.
i think this man is the physical representation of death because he claims the spot where john will be buried is a "fine spot" and he also states that he'll "see him around."
im pretty sure its his self he sees, everyone damns john, he has a son that he wants to follow what he is deep down, but not the outlaw side, the things he does show a reflection of who he is, each task he does shows who he is, he can be either good, like his inner self is, or darker, like the actions he does all the time, its up to the player to see how they want marston to act, these tasks are not only to show insight on who john is, but also, how the player views and wants him to be
The phrase "God damn it" is not directed at God Himself, therefore if the stranger is God the fact that "many have" damned him could not be linked to that phrase.
i thinks its god because he also sed that "i wish my son turned out to be just like you" and god had a son(jesus) then when marston says "damn u" and the man says "yes many have" comes from the phrase "God Damn!" then the bullets foretell marstons fututre. such as the 3 bullets that fire and go through the man the three bullets that fire and the last one jams. mean the three people that die (SPOILER) john marston, abigail marston, and uncle but the last one jams that is jack. he is still alive.
I think he's Death, some of the things he says would make it unlikely he is God or Satan, but he is someone who judges people for their actions and their life, well Death is that. The middle man who controls the balance of life and judges them acordingly < ( think i spelt that wrong ) just the part where he says about his boy. But just my opinion feel free to add to it or correct me if need be :)
The scenes are metaphors for the inner conflict within John in terms of infidelity, death, the question of god and hope as well as redemption - ultimately leading him to a place of serenity. He's expecting death at anytime, and damns himself in the end.
It's interesting that John becomes the Strange Man to the people (if he chooses to) he helps. He just pops up and tells a guy not to cheat on his wife, then leaves. He just pops up and hands a nun a fat wad of cash, then leaves.
i dont think its satan death or god, well maybe death, its a fortelling of johns future think about it he picks a good place for john the exact spot where john is buried and in the last scene john only fires three shots but trys four and the gun jams therefore you have a bullet for uncle, abigail, and john and i believe the gun jamming on the fourth shot signifies the only character that lives jack THUMBS UP IF U AGREE ON THIS OPINION
I think he's nothing more than John's imagination, John always had a problem with his morality, perhaps it's his way of thinking about him as a good guy...
He's what the player makes of him. If the player takes the bad choice in his missions, he's the devil if John takes the good road it's god. If the player takes sometimes a good and sometimes a bad choice he's death.
the son he references is confusing to me...I think he's god since he says he wishes he'd known more about life, almost like he wishes he'd know more before starting this shit heap on this planet...and yet he gives John the choices, much like we all have free will to follow gods plan or not..whether you believe or not.
I can't imagine he's God, since God's "son" is long matured at this point. Then again, the son comment doesn't seem to work in any context. I assumed he was some personification of Death because of the "life" comment and the general morbid tone and appearance. He's also very non-judgmental, not advocating either for good or evil.
you know watching this i kind of think that this is god or death judging John the last few days before he gets gunned down. I mean that's what they both supposedly do, and he gives you a choice weather to help or hurt. So maybe its deciding weather he goes to hell or heaven
@cesarseizure He's not death he's the devil. Thats why he knows all the things john did.Thats why he tells john he will be responsible for what he did.It is also why when john says "damn you" he replys many people have. have you ever heard the quote damn the devil? thats what he was talking about.
@zeroinked Or he could be God when he says damn you and he says many have... Goddammit? also he judges you at the gates of heaven and he will be responsible for what he'd done. Idk that's my guess
I think it was death I mean he looked mean had black around his eyes like he was really tired and also where John tried to shoot hm that's where he's buried
@y0tub3starr if he was god then why did he give john the option to encourge a man to go have sex with a hooker and cheat on his wife or better yet steal from a fucking Nun if that man was god then i don't think god would of told john to do all of things i just mentioned above
I'm just wondering, when the man says that he will be responsible for his actions, and John proceeds to fire the 3 shots, did he seal the fate of Uncle, Abigail, and himself? Or was it already known they would die and the 3 shots just represents them?
I think it's suppose to be god because he try's to get you to do good deeds like change the guys mind about cheating on his wife and giving the nun money. He also knew when and where these things were happening. The nun said that "god" had sent you to here (most likely referencing the guy) and when John says "Damn you" and he says many people have, I think its talking about phrases like god dammit, and stuff like that.
@wowknobs sweet jesus on fire it's not fucking god it's not the devil it is DEATH it's obviously death if it was god then god would have told john to tell this man in some town to not cheat on his wife or how about in mexico where "god" tells john to give money to some nun and if it was the devil then john would have done the opposite like instead of telling the man in some town to cheat on his wife john would say "go for it" same with the nun instead of money she gets robbed by john
@wowknobs but its not god or the devil its DEATH death just wanted to see if john would do the right thing or wrong thing its all about john's morality and to see if he has changed
Honestly I think this is John's father. He said several times that he never really knew his father. It could be his subconscious telling him that he needs to be a good father to his own son. He seems to know so much about Marston, much more then even he does. Then the last time you see him if you walk into the farm on the top floor it says something about "go forth my son" leading me to believe it's his father, but he doesn't know it.
i tell u what rockstar could made an incy tincy better. when u turn into jack marston u could go down to mcflaranes ranch and see bonnie and say hell oor somethin or go see the marshal or whatever. though i hope theres a number two based back when john still rode with the gang. that would be awesome
I feel like the stranger could be God, because when John says, "Damn you" and the stranger replies, "Many have" I feel like the stranger refers that to people in general using God's name in vain saying "God damn" I feel like it just makes sense to me.
@Noodles37UK Jesus Christ get a fucking life, you do realises that everyone doesn't always have to use proper punctuating all the time. As long as when they do actually need to use proper punctuation they do then there's not a problem with it
I think the stranger is the Grim Reaper because he is draped in black clothing and knows exactly where John is going to be buried. The belief is that Death aka the Grim Reaper's job is to sever the last ties between the soul and the body and to guide the deceased to the next world without having any control over the fact of the victim's death. Seems to be exactly what the stranger is doing to John Marston.
The gun doesn't jam. He inspects it because he can't understand why the man isn't being injured. The clicking noise is the gun reloading or the bullet casing hitting the ground.
Oh God top comment or not, punctuation was evolved in the written word for a reason, you FUCKING CAVEMAN. I truly detest your " cool " generation. Pay more attention at class and less time on these games. That hurt my eyes.
I just noticed that John shoots at the man three times and three people died for each shot (John, johns wife, and uncle) but the gun jamed on the fourth shot which saved jack
@EmperorofTerra Oh and by the way, I just remembered (even though its a month later...) the .30 cal LMG (used in WWII mainly) was made in 1919. That's probably what got you confused.
I think he's god because when John asks if he knows him (the stranger) the stranger says "I hope so" meaning he hopes john is a believer in god also when John goes to the nun John says "isn't it the lords job" the nun says "yes and the lord sent you to me" and the strange man sent John to her hinting he's god
@StraightEdgeNexus1 When someone says "God Damn it!" they aren't damning God. They are (sort of) requesting that, well... God damns it. Oh and I changed my mind. I think its Death. He is neutral. He offers a good and bad choice, where Satan would only offer bad. He also claims that he will be held responsible, and that John WILL be judged by the proper authorities. Red Dead REDEMPTION (He would be bound to Hell but instead is bound to Heaven for saving his family? Death decides where souls go.)
@Itsamemario0510 true, good point the strange man also says 'sometimes i wish i'd known more about life, wish i'd had better guidence. mot sure what hes trying to say any clue?
@MrMoverby1 Well, Death is dead, agreed? One who decides where souls are bound, be it Heaven or Hell, must have had a depressing, potentially awkward life.
I think it's supposed to be God. Whenever you encounter this stranger, he is always on high ground looking over the lands. He also mentions that he is, in a way, an accountant. Also, when John says "Damn you!" he says, "Yes, many have" probably referring to the phrase "God damnit"
bwt notify:Wild animals not attacking when he camping on mexico and hes not dying after we shooting him so he will be angel and hes gone mysteriously when we shoot 3 times
thats bullshit that theory!! it's the devil not god he is testing john and when he is saying it's a nice spot he is looking onto john's ranch were he is going to die. the three bullets symbolises the three meetings with the devil.. his gun jams because there wont be a forth
I believe it deppends on the honor : if you're evil natured he's the devil and the other way around. The "hope my son becomes like you comment" seems to point in that direction.
After i talked to him in Mexico next to the donkey i walked off and heard shouting. I looked behind me and death himself was being attacked by wolves i decided to save him. I SAVED DEATH!!! Wait...
its john's conscious. first of all, john neglects his conscious the whole game. whether you are good or bad he only has his own goal in mind, and allows people he knows are bad (abraham reyes) to succeed. also, this quest is not availible to jack marston, which suggests that this man has a personal connection to john. which implies its john's conscious. if it were death it would be availible to both jack and john because death sees no difference

alexis700077 2 months ago
@alexis700077 God's job is to judge not interfere and that's what he is doing.
wowknobs 2 months ago

It's scary that I couldn't tell if he was God or the Devil.
YorkJonhson 3 months ago
he's God cause when john says that who are you he don't answer it cause in ythe bible God don't name himself othername besides " I Am"
MrMikShadow 4 months ago
I feel like the stranger could be God, because when John says, "Damn you" and the stranger replies, "Many have" I feel like the stranger refers that to people in general using God's name in vain saying "God damn" I feel like it just makes sense to me.
Boogieboy138 4 months ago
@Noodles37UK Jesus Christ get a fucking life, you do realises that everyone doesn't always have to use proper punctuating all the time. As long as when they do actually need to use proper punctuation they do then there's not a problem with it

@greenday9090 Yeah several years later he buries her... you know... because she dies several years later. Not during the final mission.

Itsamemario0510 5 months ago
I think he's god because when John asks if he knows him (the stranger) the stranger says "I hope so" meaning he hopes john is a believer in god also when John goes to the nun John says "isn't it the lords job" the nun says "yes and the lord sent you to me" and the strange man sent John to her hinting he's god
MrMoverby1 6 months ago 14
@MrMoverby1 True, but nobody has damned God. 5:39 - 5:42
"Damn you!"
"Yes, many have."
It's the devil. He wants his son to be like John because John kills so easily. Son of Satan = antichrist = 7 year war = a LOT of death... etc etc.
Itsamemario0510 6 months ago
@Itsamemario0510 he was refering to the greatly overused phrase "god damn" so he could still be god
although that doesnt cancel the possibility of him being satan either
StraightEdgeNexus1 6 months ago
@StraightEdgeNexus1 When someone says "God Damn it!" they aren't damning God. They are (sort of) requesting that, well... God damns it. Oh and I changed my mind. I think its Death. He is neutral. He offers a good and bad choice, where Satan would only offer bad. He also claims that he will be held responsible, and that John WILL be judged by the proper authorities. Red Dead REDEMPTION (He would be bound to Hell but instead is bound to Heaven for saving his family? Death decides where souls go.)
Itsamemario0510 6 months ago
@Itsamemario0510 They could also say "Dammit to hell!"
RobotWazzy 6 months ago
@RobotWazzy Again, that's damning something else. That isn't damning God, Satan, or Death (the 3 main theories)
Itsamemario0510 6 months ago
@Itsamemario0510 true, good point the strange man also says 'sometimes i wish i'd known more about life, wish i'd had better guidence. mot sure what hes trying to say any clue?
MrMoverby1 6 months ago
@MrMoverby1 Well, Death is dead, agreed? One who decides where souls are bound, be it Heaven or Hell, must have had a depressing, potentially awkward life.

Death.

I think it's supposed to be God. Whenever you encounter this stranger, he is always on high ground looking over the lands. He also mentions that he is, in a way, an accountant. Also, when John says "Damn you!" he says, "Yes, many have" probably referring to the phrase "God damnit"

thats bullshit that theory!! it's the devil not god he is testing john and when he is saying it's a nice spot he is looking onto john's ranch were he is going to die. the three bullets symbolises the three meetings with the devil.. his gun jams because there wont be a forth
