@sonicfigurefan - haha. Tommy seriously has lost his mind .. by this I mean he has trouble even remembering his own songs.. Tommy is developing Alzheimer unfortunately, but hells.. if you're a real great friend of him, i can ask him about you and see if he remembers.. chances are.. he wont though. Oh and by the way.. he recently came back from Hawaii after seeing his daughter getting married. Hope this answers a lot of questions hehe.

@GingerGilligan They were capitalizing on the "Elvis" fad when they put him in this TV film - it was supposed to be about Elvis' story (very loosely). I personally thought he was cuter than Elvis. Then he married Nancy Sinatra, and I thought "how perfect". But they ended in divorce, and I have no idea where he is now.

I loved Tommy Sands. He married Nancy Sinatra hoping to get ahead through her Dad and Frank saw through that and was indifferent to Tommy. At 14, I sensed Tommy didn't really love Nancy and when he left her Nancy had a breakdown. Frank told her that she had family, friends and people that loved her and her grief would pass, that Tommy wasn't worth her tears. Rumor had it that Frank blacklisted Tommy and shot down his career. Tommy Who???

Tommy Sands had his own radio show when he was a kid. They wanted Elvis in The Singing Idol, but the Colonel refused because they couldn't meet his offer. Tommy Sands only wore sideburns in this one movie. He wasn't trying to be Elvis anymore than those two guys in the movie The Idolmaker were trying to Avalon and Fabian. Sands' best recordings were The Worrying Kind and the fantastic I Ain't Getting Rid Of You! (my opinion) The Singing Idol was released as SING, BOY, SING to theaters. Joe

Tommy Sands had a great song in the late '50s on Capitol called "You Hold the Future"

Performed it on Bandstand, even though it was the flip side of a now forgotten song. Awful hard to find.

The Singing Idol was supposed to star Elvis, but the Colonel wouldn't let him do it due to Elvis' commitments. Tommy Sands has his own show before Elvis ever recorded anything! SING BOY SING was a revamp of his TV film. His best song was an Elvis-type slow echo-laden song titled I AIN'T GETTIN' RID OF YOU. The best he ever sounded! He was going to write a book about him and Nancy. Frank stopped it! Joe Scibetta

Tommy Sands' mother gave him a guitar for Christmas when he was seven. He taught himself to play, and at age eight got a job at radio station KWKH in Shreveport, Louisiana.

In 1951 he cut his first record for Freedom Records. In 1952 he signed with RCA Records.

He wasn't trying to be Elvis - he started before Elvis, who started in 1954. Sands was a pioneer of Rockabilly music.

And since you have lived forever (25 years)

He lived with his grandmother here in Greenwood la ,i live in shreveport and i talked to miss kity and johnny 3 yrs ago when they was here for la hayride reunion and they asked about tommy ,they remembered playing on out door sm wooden stang at magnolia gardens ...thanks this brought back good memories

You could fertilize a good sized garden with the manure surrounding Tommy Sands. Those people who insist that Frank Sinatra was a miniature version of Frank Nitti - see some of the comments below - tell a great story about Sinatra supposedly banishing Tommy to Hawaii after he (Tommy) divorced Nancy Sinatra. It really is hard to believe any man - even an angry mafia don - would be so cruel as to banish someone to Hawaii. Why not just pull his nails off?

If you do a little research, you'll see that Tommy and Nancy were married in 1960 and divorced in 1965. During that period he supposedly banished to Hawaii - after his divorce - Tommy made at least two movies: The Violent Ones and None But The Brave (with Nancy's father); and appeared on the following TV series: What's My Line, Mr. Novak, Combat, Branded and Hardy Boys. Dean Martin - Frank's friend - had Tommy on his TV show after the divorce. Perhaps he had permission to leave Hawaii.

"The Singing Idol" was a TV musical intended for Elvis Presley -- but when Col. Tom Parker refused to let Elbis do it, Tommy Sands got the role -- and this hit song. His string of 11 charted hits ended once he married Nancy Sinatra in 1960 and, yes, Frank Sinatra ordered him into exile in Hawaii after Tommy and Nancy split in 1985. Sands stayed there until asfter Frank died; by then, of course, Tommy was a forgotten man.

Yes, Tommy (as a fictional version of "Elvis") performed this LIVE on "KRAFT TELEVISON THEATER" on January 30, 1957...and it did become a big hit for him on Capitol records. In fact, "The Singin' Idol" was later expanded into a theatrical film starring Tommy called "Sing, Boy, Sing" (1958).
