Also 70% of blacks and Latino's who are in jail are there because of drugs not violent crime. Also blacks spend more time in jail for the same drug crime than whites. Whites are more likely than black to get probation for drugs. We are facing a problem thats not going away. This is a multi level problem and racism is a part of it.

Yes, horrible crimes such as murder, rape, robbery, and the like, have been and always should be illegal; and people should be punished harshly for those crimes. However, simply because something is illegal, does not make it inherently wrong. Minorities and women were not allowed to vote at one time, and that was the law. Individuals who commit serious violent crimes are given shorter sentences than non-violent drug offenders, who get mandatory minimums. I find it ironic that in the late 60's when civil rights was a hot topic, african americans were standing up and demanding respect. Martin Luther King Jr. and John Kennedy among others, helped see an end to segragation for the most part. Which meant that the demonizing of diverse cultures had to be shifted. Enter the war on drugs which for the most part started in the late 60's. A new way to demonize blacks and latinos and to lock them away all while making a shitload of money at the same time.

Also 70% of blacks and Latino's who are in jail are there because of drugs not violent crime. Also blacks spend more time in jail for the same drug crime than whites. Whites are more likely than black to get probation for drugs. We are facing a problem thats not going away. This is a multi level problem and racism is a part of it.

Individuals who commit serious violent crimes are given shorter sentences than non-violent drug offenders, who get mandatory minimums. Prisons are built in communities where the 3rd grade natl standardized scores dont meet certain levels. Test biases limit students from lower socioeconomic status. A guy holding 5 grams of rock cocaine might get 10 years. Without looking at the individual closely there is no way anybody could say "they deserve it". Maybe some do, but a lot of folks are just trying to pay the bills and need to be sentenced to 18 months or so to teach them that what they're doing is "unacceptable". Some men learn, some don't, but America's obsession with locking people up should be an outrage to any civilized person.

furthermore im glad they brought up the marijuana issue! Its a shame that something thats been used for centuries and was such a great crop has been tarnished becuz of race, money and propaganda. Its a sad day when the demon of Greed has locked the country in backward practices and corruption. If you dont believe me you can look up plenty of marijuana history videos or info but im just happy that the truth about it is finally starting to surface more =]

sadly race does matter & 2 some powerful ppl & unless you live in the areas that these ppl do & are RAISED in the situations then dont you tell Anyone wat they should do, & bloozeman its kinda hard to do that when your raised into it, we dont wanna complain but wat are you gonna do when you see things aint changin? & ur missing the point, they asking why can the big drug companies get away with this but when someone sells an equally dangerous drug (or harmless like marijuana) they get hard time?

I find it ironic that in the late 60's when civil rights was a hot topic, african americans were standing up and demanding respect. Martin Luther King Jr. and John Kennedy among others, helped see an end to segragation for the most part. Which meant that the demonizing of diverse cultures had to be shifted. Enter the war on drugs which for the most part started in the late 60's. A new way to demonize blacks and latinos and to lock them away all while making a shitload of money at the same time.

Lol...you're still lost. You don't even know the difference between racism and being prejudice. Racism is an institution based on power. People of color (African and Hispanic) don't have the political or economic power to suppress any group; only whites have this power. They (white people/Caucasians/Europeans) have the ability to suppress any minority group (Asian, Indian, African or Hispanic). The people who have the power will control the institution, and therefore have the power to be racist.

No, actually I would say that many wrongs have been done in the past, but that we must move past that. I am the product of that actually with Native American blood and Anglo blood. Also, how were the blacks destroyed? The only people in the WORLD that CURRENTLY enslave black people are other black people (Chad, Sudan). The people that initially captured slaves for white people in America were African BLACK people. Don't use history as a weapon because it will surely bite you in the behind.

Well, Obama seems to be in the pocket of the money interests same as your average politician, and he shows no sign of ending this particular "war."
Look at Obama's pick for drug czar, Jim Ramstad. Opposed needle exchange in DC (highest HIV rate in the nation) Opposes medical marijuana and supports federal prosecution of providers and patients in the states that have made it legal.
Regardless, the real power over this is in the hands of the lobbies for prisons and alcohol among others.
