@helloadios12 He never held back. He put 100 percent in trying to win. That's what the movie is about: it's not your genes that win but your determination
The "perfect" people know their capabilities and their limits, whereas average people can push beyond their limit just like Vincent. They know what they can and can't do, so they actually limit themselves and as the leader of their organization said "no one exceeds their limit"
The scary thing is that something similar is actually happening... The genetically modified food is making people all the same. It's almost as if they're machines... And then I remembered this movie...
@Relesy BS. I oppose genetically modified food for other reasons (environmental and "intellectual property" reasons), but it doesn't matter what the DNA of the food you eat is. Chemical and nutritional content is another story though...
@Relesy Far from it. There has not been enough research in the area to prove anything. There are a few papers published that show some link to harmful effects, but the methods used were less than satisfactory, so these papers are highly criticized. Thinking about it more, I could see how crops that are engineered to produce their own pesticides could be harmful. But none of these crops are approved for human consumption as far as I know.
@Relesy What's sad though, is that researchers cannot research the effects of these crops. Companies like Monsanto license their crops like software, and they come with "end user agreements" prohibiting people from trying to modify, reverse-engineer, or publish any studies on them whatsoever. So all the data examined has to come from the companies themselves. Which, of course, raises issues with all the papers using their data.
@ektrules Someone like you isn't worth my time who hasn't even SEEN the research I'm talking about. If that weren't enough, the saying makes sense too. "You are what you eat." You are GMO. People don't even give it a change, because they've been programmed and they're all machines. Metaphorically speaking of course.
do you know whats most cunning about the scene, how cunning the directors were? the first time iw atched it, i didnt know that that detective was anton ahahahaha
@Bobdude7 hey man whats up! now i realize that you dont agree with my observation, but that does not mean that i missed the point. i know that his line was a double meaning that refers to the unquenchable fire that is the human spirit. by not saving anything for the swim back in life, he was able to find the strength to overcome his challenges as a man considered inferior. at least thats how i see it. class dismissed! just kidding. love you man
@jokerrhe HAHAHAHA i know right!? so the other day i was having sex with another man from behind when i go for the reach around and find that he has a boner. what a fag right?
@fagottron68 He didn't intend to save anything for the swim back, but since he already beat his brother, he turned back. He could've kept going if he wanted to. And yeah, you completely missed the point
@thenewplayer it seems your observational skills surpass mine! i stand corrected! but i did not miss the point. if you dont believe me then check out my response to my good friend bobdude. or not. whatever you do, i still love you. just kidding. but not really.
Thanks for posting it, I've just finished watching the movie, never get sick of it, such a beautiful movie, so well written. This is my favourite scene, so inspiring to me. One of my absolute favourite movies ever, I'm so glad I came across it, by fate, downloaded with a bunch of other movies from a guy I worked with. I meant to watch it years ago but never got round to it, so glad I finally did..
"is that the only way you can succeed? is to see me fail? GOD! even you are gonna tell me what i can & cannot do now!?"
-amazing emotional response. its amazing how those lines are so true; only you are the one who can judge how far you will go & what you will do. there is no gene for drive/desire as Gattaca shows. i love this movie & all of its messages.
I read a story about something like this where a brother pushes his deformed brother to be as good as him. But the opposite happens in the story I read than in Gattaca. The deformed boy dies and his brother is left with guilt. Personally I prefer the message of this scene being the opposite of what happened in the book I read.
Great script, great movie, good camerawork... but the acting is not always so good. That's a pitty, because otherwise it would have been a masterpeace.
He's trying to prove to vincent that he doesn't need rescuing anymore and he is sucessful. "you want me to prove it to you!" Vincent wins because he only has 30.2 years and he never saves anything for tomorrow.
'it is impossible to beat your potential. If someone did, then the potential that we gave them was not accurate'.
this movie is incredible. vincent won because he put everything into that race. not this 1 but th 1 before, he knew that if he couldnt beat his brother in that race he truely wasnt better than the others. so he would have drowned before losing, he out everything into it unlike his brother, and he won.
this film wasnt a success at the box office but is still amazing!
This is awesome man. Everyone should be like Vincent. Thank you so much for posting this. The movie best scene ever. makes me wish to be better everyday
the only way to test human possibilities, is to test the impossible... it is quite realistic, it's your belief in things that claim it's not realistic that will be your limit.
this line is how people are afraid to live, and I love this scene and quote... the world squelches and laughs at others dreams, only to bring misery back it's company.
this movie is so poetic, and life reflecting as well. It shows that even if there's someone better than you, you're not lost, but you have a chance anyway
@nickalexis1123 your comment may be a year old, but now that i ponder about it, it seems like vincent meant, will a brother crush another brothers dreams? yeah anton was hella douche
"I never saved anything for the swim back" greatest quote of all. Most inspiring scene from any movie i've ever seen. This scene, is truly life changing. The human spirit mixed with a burning desire is the way it's done!
what it means isn't that he never looks back or never gives up exactly.
when he says he "never says anything for the swim back," he means that he is willing to risk everything, even his life, to achieve his dream. That's why he was able to do what most people could not. Because most people don't have the mentality to really put themselves in the success or death scenario. They hold on to a 3rd option, to swim back if necessary. But Vincent gives himself only two options: success or death.
No, your wrong, I understand it better now. Next time reply it to me you coward. Watch Gattaca 2 by galferez. He said that whenever they swim, the would have to save the same amout of enery, same amout of strokes to just to swim back. But after this event, Vincent never saved anything for the swim back. He never save any of his energy or "strokes", he uses that last 50% of energy to go forward, to go to the other side. Have nothing to do with success or death scenario.
this is my favourite scene in the movie. I studied Gattaca in year 12 so saying why this is my fav scene would exeed my comment word limit. Anyway what are your 1st and second?
1st "The Second Morrow" ( beach scrubbing scene) I felt that he was tired of being Jerome & wish he couldn've discarded him. As Irene was in love with Jerome not him. The 2nd was "Irenes Theme" (The satalite dish array)
this is an amazing movie showin us even with our flaws we could still be amazing and nothing is truly impossible, just believe in yourself corny but very true
Vincent saved his brother because, despite their strained relationship, Antwone was still his brother. Also, when Vincent said, "it's too late for that, we're closer to the other side" and later, "I never saved anything for the swim back," Vincent (at this instant in the movie) had nothing to loose. Discriminated because of his imperfect DNA and unable to live in a world where he was unacceptable, Vincent chose to swim to the "other side" rather live in that world.
Okay, I understand what he meant by that now. I can go to further details if you want me to. Just request it and I'll gladly explain what he means by it. ^.^
the competition is you swim out as far as you can, the first one to turn back loses. So he won because he never saved any of his strength for the trip back to shore. Him saying he saved his brother was basically him bringing up "remember the time I beat you years ago" (same swim contest presumably). Thats why the brother said "you didn't beat me, bla bla I'll prove it to you"... basically wanted a rematch.
Na this one is "The Other Side" by Michael Nyman. The main theme song of the movie is "The Departure." Theyre very very similar. I almost couldn't tell the difference the first time I heard the two

wat did vincent mean when he said "I never saved anything for the swim back." yet in the movie he saved his brother... nid help people im confused

It means he gave everything he had to win, even if it meant risking his life during the swim or breaking the rules to go to space.

@liqui1987:

Thats why the brother said "you didn't beat me, bla bla I'll prove it to you"... basically wanted a rematch.

the song is called "the departure"
soulfher 3 years ago
Na this one is "The Other Side" by Michael Nyman. The main theme song of the movie is "The Departure." Theyre very very similar. I almost couldn't tell the difference the first time I heard the two
