wikipedia has a whole diagram which visually explains the various offshoots and incarnations of this band which makes them look like the psychedelic mafia. I'm confused, but I can definately say that I like their early space rock stuff best.
@Miwof That's nice- I guess we can all go to hell for digging this nice little groove. And you will be the only one left on earth with no one to shred for.
This is Pierre Moerlen's Gong right? I've been a fan of the early (60's) Gong stuff when Daevid Allen was the main man (Camembert Electrique is one of my fav albums EVER), and didn't really follow Moerlen's 70's stuff particularly. However, whilst playing GTA IV I heard this tune and liked it, and used the ZiT number in game to find out who it was by. I was incredibly surprised (and happy!) to find out it was a Gong song =) Totally made my day.
@grEzyRyd3r Mick Taylor's stint with the Stones was something of a mixed blessing, I think. It made him v famous but did little to let the world know just how good a player he is.
There are in fact two guitarrists in this track: Mick Taylor ( guest ) and Allan Holdswortth which to me is the best jazz-rock fusion guitarrist in the world.
@grEzyRyd3r Gong are an amazing band who have gone through many changes during their time. I have seen Gong play Manchester Apollo a few times in the past and their gigs are always something unique and very special.
As well as seeing Gong live, I have also seen the man himself Daevid Allen live at the Apollo too. The guy is in his 70's or 80's now and still going strong, I think he still runs Banana Moon studios somewhere in the Canary Islands, he's one whacky guy!!
French group, originally weird and very varied psychedelic rock, peaking with the "Radio Gnome" record trilogy in mid-70's. But then the original leaders left and it turned it into a jazz-fusion band, fairly close to Mike Oldfield style. The first records in that style were good (like this) but then (80's) it went downhill. Nowadays, original Gong has reunited and plays space-phychedelia again.
So you may find "Gong" music in two different styles. (And which one you like best is up to you.)
@robbienicoll Originally, they were a group of musicians of different nationalities led by Daevid Allen. They used to live together in a cabin somewhere in the french woods. There they tripped balls 24/7 and wrote awesome music about a planet called Gong. Check out their "Flying Teapot"- album
@robbienicoll French psycheledic group, related to Soft Machine. Broke up after success with their "Radio Gnome Trilogy", then rebuilt under Pierre Moerlen, and became a fusion group. It is a famous group, it is easy to find out more (although the full story is very confusing).

For a minute, I was expecting Joe Walsh to start singing, since the groove is similar to that on James Gang's "Walk Away".

Compared to the world class playing and composing on previous "Gazeuse" (esp.: Esnuria, Shadows of, Expresso, Night illusion),
I find this track simply boring.
