  • I simply love him!!!

  • Thank you, Steve

  • I just burst into tears (i don't care how gay that sounds!!) when i watched this. He is so amazing........

  • @kiwibelt

Hi glad to hear that not only I was moved, like I haven't been.

This singer is incredible and he looks the part, he feels the part, he iS the part.

Never has this song moved me so, right to my heart.

    Thank-you Steve Balsamo

  • Respond to this video... Steve - it couldn't get any better, what passion, energy and talent - Thank-you

  • I have to say that this is truley the most stunning and emotional performance i have ever heard or seen, absolutely awesome voice. This man has a god given talent, those high notes are fantastic,i defie anybody to be unmoved by this song, makes you want to listen to it over and over again.

  • I really want to say...He is the BEST. I would like to see his performance on a real stage. Go Steve!!

  • Best versioin of Getsemane I've ever heard!

  • The best version. I can't stop listening and watching to this... He is one of the best male actors/singers I've ever seen and heard!

  • impossible singer!!!!!

  • Saw him twice as Jesus - simply stunning.

  • impresionant

  • BRILLIANT, AWESOME, MAGICAL!!! Steve has made this song his own

    PHENOMENAL!!!!

  • The best perfomance of this song so far! So amazing, so stunning!

  • This guy is a great Jesus!

  • Amazing!!! An incredibly great voice - just made for this very song it seems. I've heard, seen and admired others in this role -nothing compares to Steve's performance! Seems to become one with the character and to feel the pain and desperation - there are even tears! Must be very hard to act like this on stage over and over again. THANKS for sharing this!

  • Just plain fantastic! (Also good and loud sound.)

  • This is intense. I love it!

  • Doesn't matter how many times I watch this it always gives me goose bumps!! Awesome performance!

  • Personally, I feel that the original recording with Ian Gillan is the standard by which all others are judged. But it is a truly incredible piece of music that demands all that a vocalist can give. We'll never see this attempted on "American Idol". thankfully. Peace:-)

  • Fantasztikus!!!

  • Amazing !!!

  • This is the best rendition of this song I have heard since Ted Neely. Ted is still number one but Steve is definitely close behind him. Steve's voice is magnificent. A great performance of a great song.

    Ymarsha

  • drew sarich do the beset version

  • Shows no emotion!!! You can't get any emotional than this!

  • I have directed this production 4 times and have worked with what people say were the best Jesus's ever. This guy is by far the best Jesus ever. This is a perfect performance.

  • this is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! his voice is perfect for this part!

and stevie if you are watching this.....HI!

  • bach did better

  • Easily the best live performance floating about on the Intertubes.

  • If my eyes are serving me, there are tears coming out of his! For me, what he's doing so consistent and honestly is putting the CHARACTER and the intentions behind the melody first. There needs to be a core-reason for the character's mega-high wailing-they're not just notes-he's representing an iconic historical character who is coping with life-changing conflict. If there weren't already noted performers (Gillan, Neeley)'owning' the role,he'd be just as household..still may. Bravo Mr. Balsamo!

  • I saw Steve in London 7 times dong JCS.... I adore this man!!!!

  • I saw Steve in London 7 times dong JCS.... I adore this man!!!!

  • ¡Sublime!

  • Absolutely great performance, such a great voice !!!!

  • i thought it was quite good though i dont believe in god. i might try to sing this the way he did

  • wat the hell. tooo slooow. He Killed it. watch Gethsemane (2000)its much betta!

  • Nah... no way!!

  • In my opinion the best rendition of Gethsemane ever...

  • i have perfect pitch, and i have heard a lot of good singers, that was the most increadible performance of any song i've ever heard.

  • I agree totally...

  • Steve Balsamo as Jesus?! OMG! I have the English soundtrack of Notre Dame de Paris, and I can only think of him as Phoebus.

  • every version i see of this a wait for the scream, none of them even begin to compare with gillan

  • Rubbish! Try harder.

  • if seen this live....

    you almost wanna cry

  • i'm in awe. truly amazing. what a voice. I love this guy. who is he?

  • Steve Balsamo - at least, that's what the text next to this vid sais ^^

  • No good...nobody can sing this song as good as Eric Kunze..check him out sometime...

  • Brillant!!! Love his tears ;)

  • Not Bad... One of the best version.

  • nice ted better but very nice

  • I have to agree this is the best version of Gethsemane I've ever seen. It's such a great performance and for once it actually makes me wish I could have seen this live.

  • This truly is the best version of Gethsemane I've ever seen. The emotion is gigantic. I purely love it.

  • So good. So emotional. Steve is good!

I thought the one in the movie was better (than the one the musical). But this one is the best.

  • I was there in Ahoy, and i liked it very much, I also saw him do a song of the Poe musical, that was even better! Gillan stays the best at this song because he is the original singer and this song was written for his voice. But I think Balsamo beats Neely (sorry to all Neely fans)! 5 stars!

  • I agree mostly. Gillan is the best and Neeley was great, but this version is way up there. Besides, it's much better than the Glenn Carter version.

  • did you notice that he actually teared up

    (4:40-4:50)? thats pretty powerful.

  • great performance, I think Ted's version is more powerful, but i think steve has a better voice classically. does anyone know what note he hits on "whyyyyy should i die."?? its awesome

  • It's a high G.

  • anyone who says this isn't the most amazing performance of this song, ever, is a hater.

  • Amazing performance, although personally I prefer Glenn Carter's version.

  • Those of you that are bashing this singing clearly don't have a clue! As a singer myself, I think this one of the greatest displays of perfect pop tenor belt and falsetto I have ever heard! As far as Iam concerned that can't be sung better!

  • I was there when he sang this. Most incredible performance I've ever seen. Neeley an Gillan are also good, but I prefer this one.

  • Wow! Such emotion. This may be even better then Ted Neeley, altough Neeley's singing is alot more powerful and steady, this has such passion.

  • Good version. John Farnham's version has much more power.

  • Argh fuck off! Do better!

  • I prefer this version.

  • ...wow, not bad... but I still like more Neeley's and Gillan's versions

  • The best one after the original with Gillan, thanks for sharing, 5/5

  • i swear this is the most amazing version of this song, no comparison, no contrasts...he is so incredible. and he is very good looking!! i lvoe this.

  • You don´t compare Steve Balsamo with Camilo Sexto. Steve is God!!!

  • This guy doas a very good job and I did check out Michael Balls version and honestly could not put it in the same league overall as this. I also watched Michael Crawfords version which is outstanding and probably the best. Michael has the emotion and power and anger without going over the top at times. Having said that this is pretty good and both Michael C. and Steve are good looking guys in there own ways and neither one says like an imitation of the other.

  • Emotion to maximum!

  • terrific!!!!

  • Camilo Sesto has the best interpretation of Getsemani. Look him. Really impresionant!!!!

  • EVERYONE should check out the Michael Ball version in the Albert Hall presentation.. ITS AMAZING!! He doesnt do the falsettos but its just as amazing or even better.. go check it out tell me if u like it.

  • one of the best songs EVER!!!.. and steve just made it better!!!

  • Impressive

  • his acting is the best iv ever seen.......voice is matter of taste....and he is gorgeous

  • HOly sh!T buckets!!!!!!!!!!! He is the bes Jesus next to the real one!!! way to go steve!

  • Wow By far the best version that I have ever heard. Ian Gillan's version si great also but this one just blew me away. One of the best that I have ever heaerd

  • My favorite version

  • He's just singing.

  • is it a production or is he just singing the song?? ;-)

  • just one word..AMAZING!!!! he's actually crying...what a great performance... are there more videos of him and this whole production?? I'd like to get the DVD if there is one?? can you help me??

  • I think Steve Balsamo is definitely better than Ian by a longshot, and on par with Ted.

  • I like it, but I'd like it to be more desperate and rockish, put some rasp in to that voice! This is not a lrical song! HOWEVER, his interp. is very well done.

  • No, it does not suck!

I, and I think many here are sick and tired of your comments on this vid.

There is no definitive way of singing it and Steve is doing it his way and it works. Unless you have ever done a production of Jesus Christ Superstar then you cannot appreciate how much work has to go in to make this one of the highlights.

Please stop slagging Steve off because he is doing it how he wants to and leave us real fans to enjoy it.

  • This performance does not suck; it's just that there are only two people on the face of the Earth who can perform this song as well as Ian Gillan or Ted Neeley,

Those two people are "Ian Gillan", and "Ted Neeley". All anyone else can hope to do is emulate them, never match them.

Two incredibly unique and special gifts to humanity.

  • Wow... that makes me want to go see a show. Right now.

  • this is the only man who can give this song justice. it might as well have been written for him

  • not the only one i have seen another one.....;)

  • I totally agree amaaazzzing musical performance!

  • WOW. this guy was excellent. i've been watching all the Geths here and he is one of the STRONGEST! love Drew too.

  • Yes, you should check out the you tube clip of the

original version of this as sung by Ian Gillan...No one has come close and he invented the phrasing and style this would be forever sung with!

  • If you think Camilo Sesto is garbage, then you are an ignorant man, I tell you that Andrew Lloyd Weber himself wrote a letter to Camilo Sesto when he listened CAMILO SESTO's version in 1975 telling him that his version was one of the best versions ever performed (I suppose Andrew Lloyd Weber knows of music just a little more than you)

  • guys, guys, guys.....all of you bring up great points about the song but the truth of the matter is nobody on earth sings this song like steve balsamo, there may be better jesus' but balsamo is the king of gethsemane

  • 2:55-3:10 (ish) Prove his ability to not only sing, but to sing with emotion....incredible emotion. 4:20-5:05 (ish) shows his enviable acting talents! In my opinion the best Gethsemane i've ever heard/seen, hands down...but why argue over the second best part in the show?

  • GOOD ^_^ emotionally, You can feel his confusion and confrontation . Technically, you can see everything is under his control

  • One of the better versions I've heard of this amazing song. The original singer of this song is Ian Gillan. There is no video of this but someone has posted the audio on youtube. See how incedible the original is; look for "Ian Gillan Gethsemane" and listen...

  • beautiful voice, good singer, well done steavie!

  • Camilo Sesto sings better than both Ian Gillan and Ted Nelly.

  • Camilo Sesta is absolute garbage, sir.

  • very touching! great performance!

  • he's 'aight' ..I still like Ted Neely better

  • This guy has to be the best Jesus i've ever heard=)

  • great but so good it can beat the original

  • this guys ok,but check out the 1972 version with deep purples ian gillans gethsname ,but this guy is good

  • I would love to see this play

  • What, which one? Me or the other guy?

  • Nah man he didnt mean you. He meant someone else.

  • okay no more fighting you have your opinion and i have mine

    he sucks to me

    he rocks to you

    but he sucks more!

  • Ha ha alright I'll let you have the last word. At least we both agree in the amazing talent of Ted Neeley!!

  • Forget all the feudin' an' a fussin' this is probably the best version of Gethsemane I've seen aside from Ted Neeley. And lets face it regardless of age anyone who could sing like that would probably be famous unless they were hideously ugly and even then they'd probably still make it.

  • Agreed. Steve Balsamo and Ted Neeley have portrayed the role of Jesus better than anyone else I've seen. There has been many good Jesus' over the years though. Ian Gillan, lets not forget Jeff Feinhold on Broadway for a while in the 70's. The marvellous Paul Nicholas on the Westend, and more recently Balsamo, and Arvid Larson who was also excellent. Then they pick Glen Carter for the film. A marvellous Simon Zealotes on the 96' recording, but he should have remained in that role.

  • you dips*** im 15 now!

and to the rest of you i can sing and i would out sing anybody

but you will never know that

    and glenn kicks his asss!

at least glenn can sing unless this asswhole!

  • But you said in another comment that you have been singing Gethsemane since you were 4. I was just saying that the average 4 year old would not be able to pronounce some of the words of Gethsemane let alone sing it. The last sentence you said makes no sense by the way "...unless this asswhole???" And your profile says you are 26? Are you telling a few little white lies? You also said in another comment that Ted Neeley was your tutor. Is that really true or are you lying again?

  • What the hell did you just say? Sorry, I need an idiot translator.

  • At least he's not Glenn Carter...

  • So true :)

  • you dont know me so shut up and leave me alone!

  • Ok, I wont annoy you again. I don't like making people cry. You keep practicing and hopefully you will get the shot that you deserve. The average four year old could barely pronounce Gethsemane, let alone sing it. You must be a special, special person.

  • You know what you better jsut shut up!

I have no way of recording a video if i did i would!

you don't know me so don't say shit about me that you don't know you pussy!

  • I got it wrong, maybe you could play Jesus. You certainly have the temperament of the character. All the references of him going around cursing at people and threatening them and calling them pussys. When is your Broadway debut?

  • You're so sarcastically funny dude. That's telling him.

  • Everyone, there is no point trying to respond to Lexeee1234. The fact of the matter is that they are going to keep saying they would make the best Jesus of all time. Of course they are not, thats obvious. It is also obvious that they will not post a video. They probably stand in their room and try to sing gethsemane and get tomatoes thrown at their windows by ol' grannies crying at them to stop screeching like a newly castrated octopus.

  • Steve Balsamo is the Best thing since Ted..Id love to see some of you guys do what he did...in my eyes that performance was better thn any of this Joseph rubbish. Pure, Fresh and above all amazing!

  • let just tell you a little fact about me

i have been singing this song since i was 4 YEARS OLD!!!!

ya i think i know the notes and pitches and expressions on the words better than he does!

sorry to disapoint ya but thats they truth he sucks!

i would put a video on here but i have no way of doing that!

    so just shut up!

HE SUCKS HE'LL NEVER BE GOOD

    SO BACK OFF!

  • I've been listening to JCS since I was about six years old and have heard around thirty different versions of this song. From Neeley and Balsamo to Sarich and Bach, I've heard 'em all. In order to be a good singer singing a song that has been sung countless times before you did, you have to give it something different. If you sing a song like the original, you're just doing Karaoke. Look at Gillan and Neeley. Two completey different ways of singing the exact same song.

  • lexeee1234, your arrogance is astounding. I can only hope that you can back up your ego with your actions. Maybe you'll even be brave enough to put a little proof here on youtube and let us be te judge of you. Until such a time, don't expect anyone to take you seriously. Personally, I think Steve Balsamo performs this brilliantly and it would be a joy to see someone else match up to this level. Got what it takes?

  • he sucks!

  • Whoa! This is the best performance since Ted Neeley. The only thing that's missing is the outburst of ALRIGHT ... I'LL DIE!. He speaks it instead of screaming it out like Ted did. Other than that, perfect rendition!

  • god!! this guy is ficking good!!! he made me cry just by watching this.. damn!!

  • well i would advise you to just take my word for it cause your never going to win!

  • Words mean nothing my friend when the internet is involved. You gotsta have some physical proof.

  • no he sucks!

he over exaggerates the words way too much!

uh you wanna see me on a stage with a mic singing this?

i would do soooooo much better than him considering i have been singing this song since i was 4 YEARS OLD!!!!

i know every fricken note every word and every emphisis!'

i would soooo much better than him!

    so dont even challenge me

  • Well, I guess I'll be the first to ask you to prove it. All singers have a preference for doing songs. Ted Neeley, as awesome as he is, does do his without a lot of care for timing. What you are probably complaining about is that there isn't any rock in his voice, that it sounds too clean. Listen to him sing Immortal, you may find it better. By the way, the note Steve hits in this song is a high G, if I recall my Music classes from days past.

  • I'm going to also take a guess that the first version you saw was '73. So what yo know is the emphisis Ted Neeley and/or Ian Gillan used. And as I said before, prove that you can do it better than Steve and I shall be humbled.

  • Why challenge the mentally challenged? I'd love to see a four-year-old attempt to sing such an emotional song. What would I have to do to make him show passion? Take his lolly away? Post something if you think you're better. No 15 year old can match Neeley or Balsamo.

  • if you think this song is great in english you have to hear it in spanish

  • WOW,that's a very good Jesus...great voice and very good playing...5 stars for him and for this video!!!

  • pity you haven't heard the Polish version, awesome!

  • He's the best Jesus I've ever seen!!!And also he's such a great actor!!The other versions ,I hink, aren't as good as this one.

Can anyone tell me if there's a DVD version in which the Jesus is performed by Steve Balsamo??Please!!I only have its CD

  • as a singer for 33 years i thought this was amazing, i cannot understand people who critisize these performances they should have a go, totally brilliant loved it.

  • HE SUCKS!!!!!! majorly!

he cant hit the high note

he cant say the words right

    he cant act

and he sounds like he just got done stepping on a cat!

HE IS THE WORST JESUS EVER!

  • you obviously are not a singer and dont have a clue, how can you critisize such a great performance, i would love to put you on stage with a mic!!!

  • I found an excellent version please check

    Dunya gethsemane

  • BEST VOICE I EVER HEARD!! wow!! such a great actor and singer, love the high notes and the emotion, love this song and this version , wish i saw it live! one of my fave musicals too. TOTALLY amazing, wot a star!

  • Wow! Best version I've ever heard.

Too bad of the 'I will drink your cup of poison' I really like that sentence at the original!

    But it's absolutely amasing!

  • holy crap..... absolutely amazing..

  • waaw!

  • absolutely awesome, wish i could hold those high notes as long as him.

  • he really sings pretty good! i love his falsettos, they're amazing!

  • I've talked to him on myspace before and not only is he an amazing singer but a nice guy too. I saw Ted in the show a month ago and I have to say I like Steve's singing better although Ted is the iconic Jesus that everyone should see.

  • 2.58 minutes in the performance gave me Goosebumps!

  • Neely is awesome & usually I don't care for others but Balsamo rocks this out big time!

  • Balsamo is THE Jesus. He looks like a squirrel though.

  • his voice is amazing and i'm so jealious. lol. i couldn't believe when i saw him cry , i nearly did. he is brilliant

  • I love the musical and this song but I think that this is the first time I've ever cried during it. Amazing!

  • timiexperience you have no idea about registers. Ted Neeley uses head voice for all of these notes as does this Steve Balsamo. NO one can get that high in chest voice. Not even soprano's.

  • Well I think the original(Ted) was great, but if this guy had been Jesus in the film,he would always be remembered as the one who rocked musical show business forever. This song is world-class.

  • Ted Neeley was lucky Ian Gillan wasn't available. No doubt he could hit the high notes well, but he wasn't very refined; good acting though. I can understand why people would prefer his version to anyone elses as it's the one people are most familiar with. That said, I think there have been better performers, and I feel this guy is one of them.

  • While I think that this is a fantastic and emotionally-stirring performance, I do still prefer Ted Neeley's gritter rendition. Balsamo is probably my second favorite, though... can't stand Glenn! :)

  • Nope because he chose to tour with his band deep purple.. maybe you've heard of it before..

  • No, actually. That's a rumour. He hated the director.

Neeley was much better. He changed JCS forever. No one modles after Gillian anymore. Granted, Neeley used Ian Gillian as a modle, but he turned it into something totally different...and better.

  • ted neely was not original, ian gillan was. and he did a better job then neely

  • Well he wasn't picked for the film was he.

  • I think Ted Neeley is still the original and the best, but this was a fantastic performance nonetheless.

  • ted neeley is the best...this guy is good..but he's not ted :D

  • The best Jesus I've heard so far.
