I will remember Oak Knoll for what it was a place o healing and redemption for staff and patients alike. through WWII, Korea and Vietnam , through the Cold War and Desert Storm 1 we were there, our Docs, Nurses, Corpsman, MSC's and Dental were the best...all of our staff was No 1. Our theme song going out should have been Queens we are the Champions cause were were. Damn thew Base Closure movement. God bless America we will raise to greatness again lets form a assocation Daviddan1@comcast.net

I also trained as a neuropsychiatric tech at Oak Knoll, 1967. However, first I served a general medicine ward, then awhile in the delivery room before being accepted into psych tech school. I served on the locked unit and then open unit just above it. Must have really gotten hold of me, because now I'm a clinical psychologist. The things that happened. The stories we could tell. There ought to be a reunion.
@philbrownellatlogic A reunion would be so touching... I could just imagine the stories that would be shared. Thanks for watching my video and commenting. I have a petition for a memorial to be placed at the former Oak Knoll site on Facebook, if you're interested. The link is in the video description.
First, I trained as a psychiatric tech at Oak Knoll in 65, right after Corps School. Then as my final duty station with my Marines after Vietnam. What a sanctuary and repose. I loved this hospital as much as any war vet who did their stint. I watched it grow up from wooden WW2 beginnings and now implode with dis appreciation. War horse no longer needed. Semper Fi..! Old Girl.....
I was stationed there in 1995-1996. I was a fully functioning medical facility. It should have been kept open due to presence of military retirees in the area. Before closure, Mayor Harris visited the compound and made a mention of the Oak Knoll Bowling Alley was the only bowling alley in Oakland. Once closed, Oakland has no Bownling Alley.
@docguch The main hospital building itself was only 28 years old when it was shut down; it could have provided many more years of medical care to veterans, but instead it was shuttered and neglected.
Now the land is set to be developed into housing, but I have a petition set up to try and get a proper memorial in place after all traces of Oak Knoll are gone. The link to the petition is in the video description, if you are interested. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! :)
Oak Knoll was the best duty I had and I can't imagine it getting any better than that. I always wonder what happened to my first love from there, I always wish I had been a better lover.

Sad to see this. I was born there 54 years ago. Always sad to see a part of history disappear like that. But it was old and pretty much a nusiance.

@vinvori It's too bad that the place was let go to deteriorate... if it wasn't, it could have been saved! :(

@docambra It deserved much more respect than it received on April 8th. You're lucky to have the memories of the place when it was operational.
If only everyone thought like you and actually cared.

@67mustangreg No problem. It's the least I could do for this beautiful old base and hospital that served so many. I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)
