It was a bug during the PvE NF preview. The heroes were able to capture more than one pet.

OMG a hippo! I wasn't able to join the preview, where there were still hippos. When Nightfall went live, they were replaced with crocodiles :(

It's true that you can't have more than one pet. This is a bug however, that only existed in the preview event

Heroes weren't allowed to keep animals, but still able to use charm animal. Just tell him to charm one, it gets added to the list of allies, find the next one, repeat..
