There I was - a 12-year old White boy in '69. The radio played this. My brain exploded. FANTASTIC! How can you not want to groove? My mother walked by my room and comes in to advise me that I could turn the dial to a station that plays 'good' music. She turns the dial to a whining country station, smiles, and leaves. You see, this kind of music was too Black then. My total adoration of this music was a threat. Naturally, as soon as she left the room I immediately turned it back on - quietly.
@411Rocco You got that right,,the HOPPED UP VERSIONS "SUCK". This is the perfect dance record. My radio audience when I was at WGOW in Chattanooga couldn't get enough of this record,,I used to play the full version off the LP.
The other side of this 45 rpm was just as popular. Do an ole girls heart good and post that one for me. I think it's called, "Whe You Touch Me, I Can't Stand It".
@collectoroffrance well of course the music changes with time, no two albums are alike, but when you lay down a perfect track the first time no need to remake it. know what im sayin?
I have a copy of this in my collection, normally im not one for covers but i do like Gene Chandlers version too. He made a good job of it and did it justice. Nice post thanks

There was a time when James Brown dated Tammi Terrell and would KICK HER ASS and Beat her in her head, check out the TV segment called "UNSUNG" featuring TAMMI TERRELL and it tells of the physical abuse she endured until her mother intervened.
@nursedjones I think it's during a tour that Gene Chandler a/k/a "The Duke of Earl" saw what Brown did to Tammi and gave her money to go home and call her mother to let her know what happened. Since then, James and Tammi never seen or speak to each other again.
I don't know if I heard this until the 1980s but it floored. Sort of the way Tyrone Davis' Can I Change My Mind Did. And I am glad to see others think so highly of this song which may not be as flamboyant as some of his bigger hits.
@THEMOJOMANsince1959 When I was 'on the air" I got hell from my PD for playing this record TWICE BACK to BACK. I played it and just as I started the second one (using two turntables) I put James' scream from I FEEL GOOD in the middle for a split second. The phone LIT UP and the audience was asking me: WHERE CAN I GET "THAT' RECORD. That kinda stuff is what's missing from radio today.
@THEMOJOMANsince1959 Damn you are so right...but the corporate owners don't even want good music , much less great...they want predicable " product" and they wonder why everyone is bored??
@blessOTMA It's not the corporate owners,,it's the programmers,,plus they don't want to PAY for talent. it's been years but I have no doubt I could make the phones LITE RIGHT UP and make listeners STARE AT THEIR RADIOS. Air Check FB TheMojoMan
@billchew450 I only had two PD's that knew their SH**. Sam Holman & Jack Gale Sam died fairly young in Vegas,,Jack's still kicking in Sebring,Fla. he's 85-86 now,,still does VO commercials. Has a great webpage JACKGALERADIO*COM
Does anyone know where I can find the full version of this song on CD? It's from the "Live at the Apollo"? I tried to get from Amazon.com with only 8 minutes 32 seconds. But there is a whole lot more to this song. I remember my mom used to have this song on an LP years ago. We played the lines off of that album!!!!!!!
OMG! I love this song. I love the crackling sound of the old record player as the records spinning... brings back memories. I'm so glad I got to see him live! Long live the Godfather!
For me the VERY BEST version of this fantastic tune. The ambiance, the horns, the bass simple but extremely efficient, the guitars being nearly mechanical, the drummer(s) giving the righ intonations, etc. And of course James controling the hole soul machine! Thanks again James, you made my day with your fantastic musicians!
yea, took me right back to the late sixties, just makes ya wanna dance, we all get together any type of weather, then we do the camel walk, now there really was a time ha ha
It's a REAL SHAME that someone doesn't have this FULL LENGTH VERSION of him on video. The short ones ON HERE just don't cut it. Also what kinda DUMMY does a remix of JB "STUPID"
Notice I said "When I was at CHATTANOO,GA at WGOW radio. Saying that really made the phone get hot and almost melt. I explained that there had been a mistake years before because it was really CHATTANOO,GA THEMOJOMAN(.)COM
THANX FOR POSTING THIS "ORIGINAL VERSION" and it's full length. Love it ,it just Keeps On Keepin On !!! Puttin' the wiggle in you walk and the giggle in your talk.
I forgot the name of this tune and didn't hear it since about 1970. I was just watching some JB vids then I saw "There was a time" and I knew it was this tune. Awesome! I am so glad I finally know the name of this tune. I wish I could find the album this tune is on.
@tmack43 MAN I AGREE WITH THAT "THE ORIGINAL VERSION" I was at WGOW in CHATTANOOGA when this hit and got hell from my PD for 'overplaying" it. My night audience couldn't get enough of MR. BROWN

This was recorded live at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, NYC in 1968 and released early in 1969. I agree that this is his best version.
