I'm wondering if this is the way he originally composed the song and then changed it to 7/8 to make it sound cooler and flow better. Otherwise I don't get, how a person can come up with stuff like this or 5+4 9/8 in I Hung My Head (well, I do, but it does take an awful lot of talent). Sting's the best!

just find where the phrase repeats, count the eighth notes, 123456789...Really just takes experience, but the 7/8 version is better!

for sure, but this 4/4 version has the advantage of different feels with the double time/half time changes around 3:30 onwards.

Ideally, the song should be 7/8, with perhaps a 4/4 chorus thrown in at the end, just for variety.

Sting said in an old interview that he hated this version. I think he was asked by the label to do it (See also the rock mix b-side version of "When We Dance.") You can practically see "contractual obligation" written on his face here.

Same here. I just like the 7/8 arrangement a heck of a lot better. At 1:53 Sting drops an eighth singing "Its course across the sky" just a little early. :D

Then there's the missing a capella intro that sets the mood for the song. Alas, it is missing...
