Just saw it again in an Anhydrous Ammonia class and the instructor stated it was real and the officer survived but went off on DD. The sporadic clouds of vapor is because when AA leaks it is so cold it often freezes at the leak and temporarily seals itself.
the Illinois state police have a web page showing all fallen officers and there is no listing for any in 2000. I was also lead to believe this was real in a hazmat course.
This is an Illinois State Trooper training video. This entire incident was STAGED!! I know members of the Fire Department that participated. Also you look for the year 2000 and there is no mention of a trooper dying in this month or manner on the ISP site. Nice try folks but do a little research to confirm before passing on bad info.
My work shows this video every year at our ammonia awareness training. It is a real incident. The man in the road died, and so did the trooper. The point is to illustrate how unprepared/undertrained he was to respond to this call. It overtook him like that ::snaps fingers:: A few seconds later, a crew with the right gear showed up. Moral of the story: "Know what to do, and you might live... unlike these unfortunate souls."
@biojenic On the contrary, my father is a retired firefighter who now works as an instructor at the academy. He shows this video to his class and when I informed him that it was staged, he did not believe me, so he personally contacted the Illinois state police. One 'state health official' (I believe was his title, I can't recall) returned his call and told him that it was in fact staged. I was present at the time of the phone call. I recall the official's words as "It's pretty good, huh?"
I am a firefighter and i just took a meth lab class on what to look for if we come to a burning house with certain materials in it and they showed this video in tht clas and i couldnt believe it this is so crazy....how in the world can these meth heads be using all of these chemicals and be putting it into there body it is just crazy......
This is not a fake training video, its the real deal!! If you hear when the officer arrives he thinks the smoke is from the vehicle but they are really the vapors from tank. you can hear his last breath on the radio!!
It's a training video. The whole thing was staged.
You cannot get anywhere near ammonia like the officer did in the video; invisible vapors would blind you way before you made it up to the visible stuff.
Someone Please tell me if this is real... I will say that it is easy to monday morning quarterback a response. Learn from others mistakes or this video. We have to size up the scene as we arrive, Report what we see. Train and Prepare for this... A trooper running up to check on victim is not uncommon for 1st responders with tunnel vision. We all want to help let the training kick in and size it up.
i dnt think its a training video actually, im taking classes now for a fire science degree. its sorta lik fire fighting only a bit more broad. here we go over stuff like haz mat ops. the cop parked too close to the incident from the get go, and so did the fire team. It doesnt matter if u have n SCBA(SelfContainedBreathingApparatus) or not. Fire teams are NOT supposed to park tht close to the hot zone. they also parked in the direction the wind was blowing. This video shows what u shudnt do
also, tht cop made the dumbest move by trying to run in and grab the guy. if u c some1 out cold on the ground and thers an obivous hazardous material in the air around him, and he ddnt know exactly what it was or what it can do, the first thing he shud hav done iz called a hazmat ops team. instead he put himself in danger and made himself a casualty.
Your gun won't protect protect you, a basic science education would have saved your life. Typical pig.
