Anita had a beautiful, pure voice. She was the best singer in the Carter family. Notice how tasteful Chet's guitar fills are. He was such a gifted player! He used to back the Carter Family before he became famous on his own.
I saw Anita Carter on the Johnny Cash television show sing a beautiful song. In 1993 she was on the show with Johnny and June in Branson, and reminded her of it. I wish I could remember the name of the song. She wore a long buckskin dress with fringe. It might have been the Indian Love call, or something like that. Does anyone remember her singing it?
I agree with you, farmgent. I have always considered Anita Carter to have had the best female voice ever, until I met.........Susan Boyle last year on Britian's got Talent. Their voices/singing styles are totally different, so I consider both of them my to be my favorites! (I was never that ehthralled with Patsy Cline; good, but not that great.
I love this old country classic. My girls' trio sang it in a show a couple of summers ago. Since this video is from 1955 when you couldn't show cleavage on TV, that's probably why she is holding those lovely flowers. But she is the real flower! And nobody plays like Chet.
Anita was very appreciated. Everyone knew she had the best voice in the business. She didn't like a lot of attention and made it as far in music as she wanted to. We all know she could have been a huge star, but I really don't think she cared to be one. I heard that out of the Carter family, she was least enthusiastic about performing. I am just glad we have these videos to be thankful for. More would have been nice, but Anita did it her way!
The best voice in the Carter family but the least appreciated. Far better than June but real commercial sucess never quite came due to her affliction with Rhumatoid arthitis. The drugs that she took for this condition damaged her pancreas and eventually ended her life at 66. One can only wonder what might have been had Anita struck out on her own from the beginning.
On the personal side, three marriages and four divorces didn't help.
Anita may be the best singer of a superb family. Too bad she was plagued by arthritis. And, Chet, well has there ever been more "feeling" extracted from steel strings?

Such a shame she got almost no recognition while her sister, June, (who couldn't sing for crap) always got center stage. Anita's voice gave me cold chills, June's gave me an urge to buy earplugs.
I sang and played this with Emmylou, this is such a great rendition. I must have met her when I loaned a Fender Bassman to the Johnny Cash show in London over 35 years ago.
In my opinion Anita has a smoother and sweeter voice than Patsy Cline. Both great but I like Anita better, any one else agree? *This is just my opinion so please, no nasty responses.
In Traditional Country Music, Anita Carter had no equals! There wasn't a prettier voice out there as far as I'm concerned. It's a tragedy that she was to become nothing more than a "back up" singer for Johnny Cash! She should've had a career of her own and a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame........... Just my opinion of course.
When 3-4 of the greatest singer/ musicians end up staying together for as long as the Carter family did I do not think you can consider it a trajedy. I enjoyed Anita singing with her 2 sisters more than any music that I have ever heard except when their mother was with them. They were all great and even greater together. You very well might be right about Anita being the greatest singer of all time. I sure love the way she sings the lead in All Smiles Tonight. Shes was fantastic.
I agree 100% about the success of the Carter Family and Carter Sisters. I just meant that Anita would've held a place as one of the top 3 greatest female soloists of country music history, and may have well earned a solo spot in the Hall of Fame had she went out on her own. She had the talent.......... I loved Kitty, Loretta, Patsy, and the other great ladies, but Anita's voice was pure music from the first note. I don't think there was anything she couldn't have sang.
@zerblis Wow, I listened to Mandy, she does sound great! Thanks for the introduction. But my ear still leans toward Anita. I guess I'm set in my ways!
@farmgent I think you're on target. Patsy transcended country and was so cosmopolitan. She's incredible, but Anita had that purity of the hills...so blue collar and lonesome. Beautiful, absolutely beautiful!
@farmgent Anita Carter is great. sweeter sure, but smoother is a toss up. I prefer Patsy Cline because she cries while she sings. Yes, Anita Carter was always country, and country royalty at that, but although Patsy enjoyed cross over success, deservedly, she always had that country pain in her songs, and has always been able to affect me more than Anita.
it's amazing, i first heard this song by Social D, thought it was great, i get on youtube, then find Emmylou's version, then Kitty's version. now this version. this song has a life of it's own, because it's a great song. i love every posting of it. thanks for posting! Chet is one of the greatest guitarists ever, adding Anita Carter was frosting on the cake!
Anita Carter had the voice of an angel. Its too bad she never got any great songs written for her like the big singers did. I dont know the whole story but its as if someone was holding her back. She had the voice, the looks, but not the corporate backing. Nice to see her songs posted on this site.
The story of Anita's career is an interesting one. She didn't promote herself and wanted more than anything to sing with her family. A good resource if you want to learn more is the book "Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone" and if you can get her cd box set it comes with a book about her life and career. But it is over $200.00. I found it on craigslist for $25. She was the least interested in performing of all the sisters even though she had the best voice.
I have Kitty Wells version of this song on cd and she can't compare to Anita. I think all the sisters could have gone it alone but the family was more important to them than having individual success.
Kitty Wells sang this originally, as I recall. Margie Bowes also did a beautiful recording of this song on Decca, with Jimmy Capps backing her up on guitar, but it was never promoted as a single.
Social Distortion did a cover of this song many years ago. I thought it was an original until my dad heard the Social D version and told me that was a song from when he was a kid. The original version is a great song too!
You are very ill informed about Atkins. He was also a master at playing recording sessions where he did not necessarily play his signature thumb/fingerstyle.
His style was much more than fully developed when this video was made. Atkins always said that his best playing was from about 1950-1955.
Anita could've been on top of the charts for many years had she pursued a solo career!!! She always seemed to yield to the men, or to her family and stay in the back ground. What a shame. The Carter Sisters have long been overlooked for Hall of Fame inductions!!!
great great voice , check out the clip with hank Sr," I cant help it if im still in love with you". What fantastic phrasing the first two lines, the whole ting is awesome and some.
At the end of the day though, I would rather lay down next to sweet Anita!
