  • I have a much different version under the name of "Eddie Condon's Footwarmers," with Jimmy McPartland, Jack, Mezz Mezzrow on clarinet, Joe Sullivan on piano, and Eddie on banjo, recorded by Okeh in 1927.

  • According to the Rust discography, this is not a Condon group, but the Ben Pollack band recording under Irving Mills' name. The Condon version was recorded several months later.

Both are classic even though they prove that all jazz solos were not extemporanious.

  • Holy cow! How did I ever miss this one?

I have the Eddie Condon 10/30/28 'Makin Friends' with McPartland & Mezz, but never heard this one until today. Absolutely magnificent! McPartland, Big T, Gil Rodin, J. Dorsey, Larry Binyon (saxes), Vic Bredis (piano), Ray Bauduc (drums). Recorded April 4, 1929. On the Challenge 999-B, issued as 'Dixie Jazz Band'. THANKS MUCH FOR PUTTING THIS ON UTUBE!

  • Thanks for the correction of my mistake. I haven't heard the Condon record since years and was a bit sloppy.

    Addendum - Bruyninckx discography write:

There were also Tommy Thunen (tp) Dick Morgan (bj,g) Harry Goodman (tu,b) on record.

Take 4 (mtx.8543) was used and released as follow.

    Banner 6360 as "Kentucky Grasshoppers"

Columbia 36010, M-673 as "Jack Teagarden and the Whoopee Makers",

Challenge 999, Jewel 5569, Oriole 1537 as "Dixie Jazz Band"

Regal 8768 as "Jimmy Bracken's Toe Ticklers"

  • There was a session with slightly different musicians (incl. Benny Goodman, Big T) on February 11, 1929 who recorded take 1 & 2 but never released.

DIXIE JAZZ BAND was an pseudonym for Irving Mills recording groups.

  • Ouch! Made a bit of a mistake.

"Tailspin Blues" was done on 9-25-1929 and T's solo on that record is nearly identical to this one, both in technique (no bell) and phrasing.

Anyways CDB, if you're interested in selling this record or, perhaps, a trade, I'm pretty confident we could come to a fast agreement - this was 24 year old Teagarden's first recorded vocal and, as a HUGE fan of his, I'd love to have this beauty in my collection.

    Please let me know.

  • DIXIE JAZZ BAND is a very interesting pseudonym for a another pseudonym band THE KENTUCKY GRASHOPPERS. In fact it's the great Jack Teagarden on vocals & trombone with Eddie Condon and his Footwarmers: Jimmy McPartland (cnt), Mezz Mezzrow (clt), Joe Sullivan (pno), Eddie Condon (bjo), Art Miller (bs), Johnny Powell (dms)

Recorded 30 October 1928, New York City

  • Yep - I knew Teagarden and Condon were in there, but didn't know that it was an actual Condon assemblage. Sounds like a couple saxes in there as well.

Sounds like Big T did the same thing he did in "Tailspin Blues" w/The Mound City Blue Blowers in 1928 - took the bell off his horn & played his solo with the slide alone.

CDB, if you ever feel like selling this 78, I'm sure we could quickly arrive at an agreeable price. Serious.

    Just let me know.

  • I'm happy with this copy on Utube...
