This was the best filming of the material I have seen. I do not understand why David Lynch's version is preferred when he strayed so badly in presenting the combat methods and brilliant military ideas created by Herbert. One of the problems with the material, which the screenplay of this TV treatment brings out, is that Herbert had trouble conceiving what it would be like if a truly prescient human was entrusted with the future of mankind. But at least he tried, and he created an amazing drama.
The Golden Path is not clearly defined in the series....the ultimate survival of mankind, everything else is trivial...that is why if they do plan to film "The God Emperor of Dune"...they will have difficult time doing it...
The only problem that I had with this mini series was the fact that they changed the way Alia died. her death in the book was so much better. Aside from that this was WAY better than Sci Fi's original Dune mini series.
@Ashleyls17 That really depends. Some say the mini-series sucks, citing crappy SFX, acting and costumes. Others slam the David Lynch movie for taking liberties with the book's setting. Both the movie and mini-series are definitely one of those movies you have to see for yourself. Keep in mind though that part of the appeal is seeing Frank Herbert's masterpiece 'Dune' coming 'alive', so to speak. This might not appeal as much to you if you haven't read the books.
@mnbgfdsa Actually, the song is supposed to represent the language of the Natives of Dune, but actually, they just hired a singer that uses her voice as an instrument, rather than saying words for any language in particular. so no language at all.
@Jazokills The language actually is Fremen. The writers of the show however did expand on what was available and made some new words. Says so on the making of part of the DVD.
@Jazokills That's not totally accurate. Azam Ali is from Iran, she uses her voice as instrument, yes, but she actually sings in languages as Farsi and Turkish. The language of this song is Chakobsa, the Fremen language, with a little make up of course, with a vocabulary gathered from the books by Herbert.
@mnbgfdsa It's in the Fremen language. In other words, it's the language that Frank Herbert made up for his Dune books. If you haven't read thme you should ASAP.
An excellent montage for Inama Nushif! Thank you so much!
And unfortunately it's true. The film project is now on hold. You can plug "Paramount Ends 4-Year Attempt To Turn Frank Herbert’s ‘Dune’ Into Film Franchise" and you'll find the article that details recent events.
Crap... -.- But, of course, the movie Battleship will be filmed along with 5 sequels. God forbid that they actually film something worth watching for a change..
@o3oSeyren me too, I never gets old, I come at least once on the month to see and hear it, if I ever found a girl as beauty as Ghanima I will gladly sign for the royal concubine post...lol
@AkiraBrahe Dude. The women of Somalia. I work at a large shipping warehouse. Many women of Somalia work there. Everytime one of them walks buy me I get shivers up my spine. They are all stunningly beautiful. They wear the most beautiful long flowing colored robes. They are the Bene Gesserit. Dune is us. It is all in front of our eyes. We just don't know it.
@Itsaboutthewaterlife ...tastes are different...I favor girls with who have a "Hispanic" look like Ghanima or Alia, they look like a mix of Arabian and European blood which is simply stunning for me...as for the Somalia girls, well, yes they seem to be more beautiful than the average....thank you for the info....
I am amazed at the mind of Frank Herbert. How he could produce such a colossal wealth of ideas as Dune contains is stunning. I often think science fiction writers have a better vision of humanity and where we may be going than many scientists and so-called 'futurists', because they can consider so many different things at the same time. Kind of like Paul Muad'Dib, I guess.
@squamish4244...hehehehe nice one there..aren't we all when the GOD Emperor of Dune takes center stage...of course with the exception of Duncan Idaho whose unpredictability delights and amuses the Worm and is highly valued by both the Atreides and their descendants..
@squamish4244 Frank Herbert created an unprecedented tapestry of culture, religion and politics in a way that only a student of history like him could could conceive. He was a man who saw things in the long term, which is probably why his epic saga spans nearly 6,000 years, all built towards saving humanity from it's own self-inflicted extinction.
I have always liked the tune, sort of mesmerizing.. I like the movie because it exposed my 2 boys to reading! Sci fi classic of all time. So detailed in the book and so complex.
There were several empires that melded Greek and Eastern influence, something Herbert knew.Which was one reason why at the beginning of the book it was stated that the Atreides could traced their origins back to some Greek house. In the first book anyway
Selucia itself in time was covered by a sand dune, however the greeks who founded it from the ruins of Babylon lived on.The first work of science fiction " a true story" is traced to an Assyrian author who also wrote Stratonice.
@UpstairsMaid How could you even begin to compare such a well orchestrated and ingenious masterpiece such as Dune to Avatar?? If anything Avatar was influenced by Dune, like a lot of sci-fi, Dune set the standard, hands down.
I decoded Paul's teachings and have solved the water and heat crisis of our very own Earth Prime, I wish to summon up all the magic in creation and be the lead mysterious standing only cameo in the film. I didn't really like the first miniseries...but I loved the second, even though it made some departures from the novels...but Dune is one of those stories you don't have to follow Exactly, and it'll still be awesome.
@SgtSplatter782 That's beside the point. What's wrong here is that B. Taylor plagiarized the lyrics from the Dune Encyclopedia. I would no problem with this song if he wrote lyrics in Farci and claimed it was Fremen, because as you mentioned the languages are very similar.
But he didn't write the lyrics, he copied them almost word for word from the Dune Encyclopedia, changed some spelling, added a few nonsense words, and wrote his own "translation". That's wrong and that's why I have a problem.
@sadailinikada86 ive read the first 4 books almost 2 years ago and I'm still trying to figure out what Herbert isgiving us with these messianic figures. Leto was a stopcock for progress. But the entire series ends with another messianic figure in Duncan; also all of them being men, while the women (bene gesserit, honored matres), bring conflict, but also growth.
Brian Taylor claims he wrote the lyrics to this song after researching the Fremen language in the novels. This is not true. The lyrics are almost entirely lifted from a translation of a Dune passage found in the Dune Encyclopedia.
The music is cool, the English lyrics he wrote are cool, but the Fremen lyrics being sung are not his creation.
Not fair that Leto got to live on as a god emperor and Ghanima had to live a normal life. How did Leto bear the thought that he would live on when she was dead?
I so freaking much love Dune, especially the last Book the finally reconciles humanity with science in the form of the Machine Hybrid Duncan Idaho and Erasmus and frees Humanity from the various Dogmas that held them captive it.
@tbilisicentral No, no there are still 3 books you have to read.
Chapterhouse Dune, Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune ;) the last to are from his son with help of letters and conversations with his father to end it in the general direction Frank Herbert wanted it to end!
@annata12 interesting...i didnt know about the exitance of these books. i did have a feeling that it might require more explanations before ending the saga. thanks. i found some audiobooks pre-Dune-ing about each house: Artreities, Corino, and Harkonen. have u read them, are they any good?
@tbilisicentral No not those books, but I've read the Butlerian Jihad and The machine Crusade, which play roughly 110000 years before the first Dune Book! They explain why the Dune Universe is so bereft of technology and scientific progress and so highly religious.
@annata12 well, "children of dune" and "god emperor of dune" kind of explain the situation, although, by just mentioning the occurance of those events. its definately an epic.
The series is incredibly complex. It's impossible to fully grasp it even in the mini-series. You would have to handle it like LOTR in multiple segments to fully appreciate everything going on from the Butlerian Jihad to Kralizec.
Great upload and first attempt! Dune is easily my favorite piece of escapism (sorry Tolkien). Love the miniseries aswell (<3 Chani & Paul), I hope they carry it on some day.
I love this song. It always calms me down and puts me at ease. Brian Tyler's truly an amazing composer o.o;;
In any case, the Dune saga is probably one of the greatest pieces of science fiction I've ever laid my hands on. The sci-fi makes of the first two books were not bad at all. It all depicts great amount of philosophy as well as political ideologies. Although idealistic, I love the symbolism of the second one in which Leto destroys the myth his father was trapped in and made himself a god
dune and avatar are completely different. avatar is a fantastic visual voyage. dune is best read, it is a wealth of incredible ideas, thoughts, complex plots and character development. I love avatar, but am in awe of dune.
Cameron is a huge fan of the books but was mixed on both movies of Dune even though he did liked Children of dune and you can tell Avatar has similarities to Dune all the way and was inspired and even borrowed from Last of the Mohicans, Nausicaa, Castle in The Sky, Heavy Metal, Star Wars, Star Trek and Fantastic Planet in one movie. I adore both the Dune books and Avatar myself, COD is the best Dune movie ever.
@UpstairsMaid i agree with that dunes an ok movie but its the original sci fi novel and nothing beats the original but in movie form avatar is better not by much but it is
@cmsahe They canceled the movie because it's the real of the ity now, that we are Araakis and Dune WILL BE our planet earth if we do not capture the free radicals which are CO(subscript2). Dry ice, set in a 6 pack and a half cooler, let to sit think about it for a couple hours, if you blow into it, it will release a cloud of cool air back at you, cooling you more than the air can around you, with nothing but a thermodynamic heat pump in a double walled plastic cooler. ::Tal:: Paul Mu'DepABQ611
@kiyotewolf Um dude what are you talking about? Dune probably wasn't always a desert planet, if you've read all the original books then you'd know how that all happened, but it had nothing to do with global warming.
Avatar didn't have one shred of original idea. It was basically pocahontas. Avatar, although fun to watch had a VERY simple plot, with its messages (that have already been told in all the same ways) spaced out, and very general in a largely static universe. Dune has intricate, dynamic plotlines that have very real applications for all of time. It was also ALL original. Avatar wasn't meant to carry tonnes of messages, it was meant to be fun to watch, and make money.
@Sunriel [1st response deleted 'cause it sounded a little dickish. Never post before morning coffee.]
According to the story, the Bene Gesserit tried to force that option on the twins in order to preserve the Atreides bloodline. They explicitly? and emphatically refused to accept it. They were close to each other, but not THAT close.

This is the best mini-series ever that brilliantly captures the other Herbert books well, i love it. I've been a fan of the novels since i was 12 about 18 years ago and been hooked into the novels.
why are some of the people in here's eye so intense O.O, and and and OMFGG, I LOVE THIS SONG. I LOVE THESE KINDS OF MUSICC. (=, !ahh favorite! goodjob(: good work!
May i make a suggestion? Check out the Dune books by Frank Herbert. I think that will make the movie/mini-series attempts more interesting for you. All the attempts succeed in some ways and fail spectacularly in others. Children of Dune (COD) does a great job catching the "flavor" but it doesn't try to be spot on. ie Leto and Ghanima are teens in the show but much younger in the book. If for no other reason, COD is worth watching for Brian Tyler's score.
@mrAZcardinal, It is a so called mini-series, there had been another one called Dune (not the Lynch movie), 3 movies, CHildren of DUne were another 3 movies with mostly the same actors.

@mrAZcardinal Just watch the Lynch version of Dune and go right to Children of Dune. Not that the Lynch version of Dune was that great, but (IMO) it's better than the Sci-Fi version.
I thought Lynch's movie was a hideous butchery done by a weirdo who knows no jackshit about the book and he raped it. Dune can never be a film, it's too impossible because i grew up with the books since i was 12 in the early 90's and i thought Lynch's movie sucked cocks.
You glad they are re-doing Dune again for the big screen? i hear it will be 3 or 4 parts as that's the why to do Dune justice and make it like Lord of the Rings. Hopefully it will be better than Lynch's monstrosity and the Sci-fi version! besides we do have Dune-like movies such as Avatar, The Matrix, Star Wars, The Fifth Element, Stargate, Dark City, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Serenity, The Dark Crystal etc. which all had themes and ideas like on the novels.
@enigmaticocean At least the Sci-Fi version stuck closer to the book. And didn't include garbage taken from Lynch's imagination, like "weirding modules" and milking a cat for a poison antidote. :\
Lynch's movie is a cult classic but for the wrong reasons, it's one of those cult classics like Showgirls that often gets watched alot for people to laugh at how bad it is.
@mrAZcardinal It's a mini-series, which is essentially a cross between a movie and a TV show. The story is told over a series of installments that are broadcast over several days. Each installment takes up a two-to-three hour block of television scheduling. This one is called Children of Dune and had *epic* music. : )
@mrAZcardinal to add on to Ns reply, the two mini series were depictions of the the first two books from the Dune saga written by Frank Herbert. There are six in total. Unfortunately, si-fi hasn't gone on with them considering how amazingly insightful the second one turned out to be.
@Pommes1983 Well, yes and no, seeing as Fremen is closely based off Arabic, but only in the same way that Klingon is based off a mashup of Gaelic and Russian
Inama nushif (She is eternal) Al asir hiy ayish (No malice can touch) Lia-anni (Singular and ageless) Zaratha zarati (Perpetually bound) Hatt al-hudad (Through the tempest) Al-maahn al-baiid (be it deluge or sand) Ay-yah idare (A singular voice) Adamm malum (speaks through the torrent) Hatt al-hudad (Through the tempest) Al-maahn al-baiid (be it deluge or sand) Ay-yah idare (A singular voice) Adamm malum (speaks through the torrent)
@paul3640 just looking at it though, it seems to be derived off of Arabic. You know, angry dudes who want us dead aside, it looks, reads and sounds like beautiful language.
@MaricaAmbrosius actually. yes it was indeed based off of Islam and the arab world. Being so young when I first saw it, 14 or 15 (2000), I didnt understand the whole premise behind it all. But being older it is pretty clear...
I don't think you have to ask us to be nice, this is a great video! I remember when the miniseries came out, I kept replay this song. So mournful. Again great video, I think everyone will be very nice about your video. :)
This an awesome fan vid indeed with an equally awesome song from one of the best TV renditions of the book so far. At least until a big screen rendition does come along that truly give it justice and not Lynch's sad excuse of a film.
beautiful planet earth...all will be right, one day.

UpstairsMaid 1 year ago 38
@UpstairsMaid
Johnlindsey289 11 months ago

According to the story, the Bene Gesserit tried to force that option on the twins in order to preserve the Atreides bloodline. They explicitly? and emphatically refused to accept it. They were close to each other, but not THAT close.

@mrAZcardinal Just watch the Lynch version of Dune and go right to Children of Dune. Not that the Lynch version of Dune was that great, but (IMO) it's better than the Sci-Fi version.
enigmaticocean 1 year ago
@enigmaticocean
I thought Lynch's movie was a hideous butchery done by a weirdo who knows no jackshit about the book and he raped it. Dune can never be a film, it's too impossible because i grew up with the books since i was 12 in the early 90's and i thought Lynch's movie sucked cocks.
Johnlindsey289 1 year ago
@Johnlindsey289 it was bad, but it was better than the Sci Fi version.

@enigmaticocean
Johnlindsey289 1 year ago
@Johnlindsey289 Not surprising, considering that Dune is the greatest sci-fi novel ever made.
kertaspaper94 1 year ago
@enigmaticocean At least the Sci-Fi version stuck closer to the book. And didn't include garbage taken from Lynch's imagination, like "weirding modules" and milking a cat for a poison antidote. :\
Really. Milking a cat? Ew.

LordXehenniar 1 year ago
@mrAZcardinal It's a mini-series, which is essentially a cross between a movie and a TV show. The story is told over a series of installments that are broadcast over several days. Each installment takes up a two-to-three hour block of television scheduling. This one is called Children of Dune and had *epic* music. : )
kelincihutan 1 year ago
@mrAZcardinal to add on to Ns reply, the two mini series were depictions of the the first two books from the Dune saga written by Frank Herbert. There are six in total. Unfortunately, si-fi hasn't gone on with them considering how amazingly insightful the second one turned out to be.

@paul3640 just looking at it though, it seems to be derived off of Arabic. You know, angry dudes who want us dead aside, it looks, reads and sounds like beautiful language.
grtwhtbnr 1 year ago
@grtwhtbnr The way I understood it, the Fremen religion was derived from Islam. ("They denied us the haj!") So, Arabic seems plausible. :)
MaricaAmbrosius 6 months ago
@MaricaAmbrosius actually. yes it was indeed based off of Islam and the arab world. Being so young when I first saw it, 14 or 15 (2000), I didnt understand the whole premise behind it all. But being older it is pretty clear...
