When I was a kid playing the trombone(1971 high school) this always gave me chills. Now more than ever. One of those songs I wish I wrote. God bless Sousa so it wasn't up to me.
I kinda think this should be the U.S.A.'s national anthem. For one the tune feels distinctly american. Thats because it was written by a true american composer, John Philip Sousa. While the lyrics to the Star-Spangled Banner were written by Francis Scott key, also an american, he originally wrote the song as a poem. The tune of the SSB itself is from a british drinking song. I have other reasons too, but I'm running out of room to type. :)
@Jilktube Sorry but this is not what a national anthem should sound like. The national anthem we currently have is awesome, and while the original tune was from a british drinking song, we have modified the tune a bit since the Star Spangled Banner was written, then again since it was our national anthem. National anthems should be somewhat slow, and not too long. This is a great song for playing on the 4th of July during concerts, but it shouldn't be our national anthem. The current one is great
@SemperFiOorah1 That is your opinion. I strongly disagree. An anthem should be a song that represents the nation whose anthem it is. Therefore an Anthem could be many different types of songs depending on the country.
@knepie Yeah i get that, all I said was that the anthem we currently have is awesome and while this is a great song that I love, it can't beat our current national anthem.
@SemperFiOorah1 I wholeheartedly agree. An Anthem is sort of a reflection of the Triumph of the country, and is thus very stately and "Royal", if you will. This is more nationalistic, and is celebrating America as a whole, whereas the anthem is a musical representation of our Country itself.
I wish this was the United States national anthem. I hate their anthem, this is far superior. Fuck, I'm Canadian, and I would go marching into war to this song.
@cmyersguy yeah I'm Canadian too, but I really wish this song was ours, it has that sense of pride that I don't get from our anthem. Not that I dislike it, but our anthem needs to be sung juuuust right, and if you get the folky singers its putrid. I'm in a rural area so all I hear is acoustic guitars and phony singers, I like strong instrumentals.

Not surprised to hear that, Sousas music was great for the Circus atmosphere. It added to all the thrills and drama like no other. His music was so hot it probably started the fire in the first place!
@GhostXoP I like it MODERATELY, I don't DROOL over it, OK? And I dson't have to leave any "great continent", I already do in the one where everything started, for good or bad,
@277Jules Going back in time, yes - one can consider Africa (Egypt), Asia Minor (Mesopotamia), the Far East (China...), etc. But the type of civilization which, for good or bad, gave origin to the way the Western World lives now, comes from Europe.
@MsRoyalTiger its funny you say that because this was the song that Merla Evans played at the Ringling Bros. circus in 1944 to alert the staff there was a fire in the tent. It was their emergancy song, if you will.
You Yanks sure do know how to put together a great marching tune that has such meaning. Although the Brits don't do too bad either. But this has got to be one of my favourites.
@Juanimador Actually a picallo-not to be confused with a picadillo. I agree- what brilliance to stick that in. A trumpet, sax, or trombone wouldn't have been the same.
@Omnikron228 Well, I've never seen in any other country so many cases of obscene obesity as i saw in the USA. It's all those burgers from hormone-fed beef and those french fries that make you FAT... Lousy alimentary habits.
@NirvanaMegadeth1567 YEAH, you TRY that... Communism kicked the bucket 20-odd years ago, but terrorism is still alive and kicking, and thumbing its nose at you from the caves on the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan, and from all islamic countries - and are getting the upper hand on you guys, too. Pretty soonj you'll be kicked ut of there as you were in Vietnam, 1975... And to think, when your expeditionary forces left for Afghanistan, they were thinking of a 2-wks pleasure excursion... LOIL
If you honestly think some dumb sand nigger in a cave was behind 9-11, you, Geogi boy, are a moron. And Vietnam would have been a quick victory if Goldwater won. But I digress. If it was not for American and Canadian inte intervention, a

If you dont like this song, your probably not american, and probably need to leave the Great American Continent
GhostXoP 1 year ago
@GhostXoP I like it MODERATELY, I don't DROOL over it, OK? And I dson't have to leave any "great continent", I already do in the one where everything started, for good or bad,
Gheorgyi 1 year ago
@Gheorgyi ...didn't "everything" start in Africa?
277Jules 1 year ago
@277Jules Going back in time, yes - one can consider Africa (Egypt), Asia Minor (Mesopotamia), the Far East (China...), etc. But the type of civilization which, for good or bad, gave origin to the way the Western World lives now, comes from Europe.

Sousa's music is easy listening but is more suited for the cicus than the parade ground!
MsRoyalTiger 1 year ago
@MsRoyalTiger its funny you say that because this was the song that Merla Evans played at the Ringling Bros. circus in 1944 to alert the staff there was a fire in the tent. It was their emergancy song, if you will.

You Yanks sure do know how to put together a great marching tune that has such meaning. Although the Brits don't do too bad either. But this has got to be one of my favourites.

Piccolo just to clarify.

@Juanimador even if its a piccolo :P
spiderwell 1 year ago
@Juanimador Actually a picallo-not to be confused with a picadillo. I agree- what brilliance to stick that in. A trumpet, sax, or trombone wouldn't have been the same.

@Juanimador i believe that it is piccolo not flute

@Omnikron228 Well, I've never seen in any other country so many cases of obscene obesity as i saw in the USA. It's all those burgers from hormone-fed beef and those french fries that make you FAT... Lousy alimentary habits.

@juanlugo100 Kind of repetitious, ain't you??!!!

LOIL
