Theres another, this was in the late 60s. Shanks used kidiology on his own players.
In 1967,Liverpool were playing Man United and Shanks went through the Man United team, and he said Alec Stepney...can't catch a cold, Tony Dunne, farts move faster....Nobby Stiles..blind as a bat, and on he went, until he came to Best,Law and Charlton. He said if you can't beat three players, you're all dropped. Liverpool won,and Shanks said at the end of the game...aye you've just beaten the best team in Europe.
There was a story I heard and it came from Kevin Keegan.
Liverpool were playing West Ham and, Shanks called KK to one side, and said ''Look at that Bobby Moore,he's got a gammy ankle,he's got dandruff and he looks like he's after been on the sauce''. During the game Keegan scored and Liverpool won. At the end of the game, Shanks approached KK and said ''Ah son, that Bobby Moore is one hell of a player''
Unless I am very much mistaken, Mr Keegan joined Liverpool (from Scunthorpe United) in the May of 1971. He was 20 years of age at the time - given that his date of birth is: 14th February '51. In that interview, he mentioned that shortly after he had joined the Merseyside club, Mr Shankly told him that he would play for England one day. Yet Kevin added that he was NINETEEN years of age at the time. It seems to me that his memory is not as reliable now as it was when he was a younger man!
I remember Keegan talking about his favourite Shankly story. Liverpool were playing away. Shankly's favourite player was winger Tom Finney from Preston, who had retired years before. The winger who had played against us that day had a great game. As Shankly was leaving the ground after the game, one of the opposition fans said to Shanks that their winger was almost as good as Tom Finney. Shanks replied "Aye son almost, but you've got to remember Tom Finney is 64 years old"
You can't teach class. What Keegan is saying here is class. King Kenny is class. And Liverpool F.C are showing the rest of them what class really is. Not just on the park, but as a whole.
Kevin Keegan signed every autograph when I met him around 1983 even though Terry McDermott was telling him to go as they were in a car. An inspiration.
Kenny Dalglish is bringing back this quality to Liverpool. Maybe they won't achieve the same greatness for a while but listen to Kenny speak and it's the same modest but tough professionalism that's so lacking the modern which is just so vulgar.
