I wish this had appeared on her "Soul Sounds" LP. Incredible song and I absolutely love it near the end where she's putting so much into the reading of that line "I Just Can't Forget Him" almost to the point where her voice cracks just a bit with emotion. This song, with it's never-ending modulation really pushed Chris Clark's vocals to the limit, and the results are pure gold. Good mercy this woman could sing!
Nothing mediocre about her voice. She simply wasn't provided with very impressive material. The songs they gave Chris at motown were okay, but they sure as hell weren't no "Baby Love" or "Jimmy Mack". That's for sure.
Motown never promoted her the right way...they were leaving Detroit (due to "health reasons") and out here they just had her a 2nd or 3rd stringer...I worked alot of her sessions, as a set up man.
I read somewhere that Berry Gordy was smitten with her because she was tall and statuesque, and he was also taken with her voice, even though others at Motown thought she was kinda mediocre- but I guess you didnt argue with the boss!!
When I first heard this song some years ago when I bought Chris's cd I feel in LOVE with this song and she really sounds damn good on a lot of these more stylish songs. This is one of my favs by this wonderful lady of Motown.
A classy vocal, on a classy song, from a classy lady.

Clark has as much charm and smoothness as Petula Clark, yet she can belt out the blues as good as anyone. Amazing talent! Love her!
