A bunch of these would make a great addition to an ejector ramjet, in lieu of rockets...just a thought. And, since they run as hot as the hinges of the gates of Hell, they would make a great heat source for a Stirling engine.

I imagine nickel-aluminide would be a great material for these things. They already use it for furnaces and whatnot.

@theeclownbro You could try one of the nickel, or cobalt-based superalloys (Rene, Waspaloy) that they use for turbine combustor buckets...but it will still glow white hot. You could wrap it with a mullite fibre blanket, though.

The purple looks to me like infrared emission, that is, the camera does not have a very good filter for blocking infrared light. The purple color is an artifact of the transmission curves of the color filters used in the camera image sensor..

It's breathing in air which in turn mixes with the acetylene. The torch helps to get it started and as soon as it locks in the oxygen is shut off. Now the torch only acts as a metering device for the delivery of acetylene. The pulse jet and the atmosphere does the rest.
