@ Selenium101 I have an iPod Touch 2G, but the iPhone really is much, much better. Because you are ONE not always in a WiFi network, TWO It' nice to have ur phone and ur iPod in one thing, instead of carrying a touch and another phone.

oh and Edgv78: on AT&T the lowest plan is of course $40, but the iPhone comes with unlimited data for $30 dollars so if you dont get any sort of messaging plan, then the very lowest is $70 a month, plus a one time $40 activation fee. But it is sooooo worth it!!!

waste of money. just get the ipod touch 2g and you'll see that their practically the same thing.. except the phone and loud speakers. the touch saves you A LOT of money, because there are no bills, and you can text and chat as much as you want whenever you're in a wi-fi network. pretty good product, but i wouldnt waste thousands of money for this when i can have the ipod touch 2g for about $300.

If you get a plan with internet data then your bill will be just like a normal phone. The iphone just uses alot of internet data which means if your're a hardcore youtube user or internet user then you may need about 500mb - 1gb of internet data but if your're not then you will only need like 100-200mb. at least in australia, the calls etc are the same as a normal phone.

With AT&T in the US it will cost ~$200 for the 8GB version w/ a mandatory 2 year voice + 2 year data contract OR ~$300 for the 16GB version w/ a mandatory 2 year voice + 2 year data plan. I am not 100% certain on the prices of the voice plans because there are so many, however the data plan costs $30/month for unlimited data and 200 texts.

Yes you can, its called an "Unlocked" phone. I am not sure exactly where to find these in the States as AT&T has the exclusive contract with Apple, although I know people do have unlocked iPhones in the US. I think it is much easier to acquire an unlocked iPhone in Europe though as Apple is forced to unlock their phone in certain countries due to government restrictions. You might also check with mobile carriers in Sweden to see if the iPhone is offered there with a contract.

Also, just a little side note. If you do buy an unlocked iPhone be prepared to pay around 2.5x as much as you would a locked (contract-based) iPhone. (Expect to pay between $500-700US) If you are absolutely 100% positive you want and will keep an iPhone for a few years then you should spend the extra money for an unlocked one, however if you are not sure or you are the person who likes a new phone every year you may lose money in the long run by buying a unlocked phone.

Because Apple said so. This is the only "smartphone" from ATT that actually requires a $30/month data plan. I've talked to reps from ATT and you can get a BlackBerry or Palm without a data plan by having a text message plan. You can get broadband internet for $30/month today and for what I will be using it for, this mandatory data plan was a deal breaker for me. I'm sure for some this is not a big deal but for just a personal phone I do not need a data plan.

Technically you do not need WiFi to use the GPS system, however due to the fact that you need maps in conjunction with the GPS system, you must have some type of data connection (3G, Edge, or WiFi.) Unless there is a way in the future to load map data onto your iPhone memory you must have a data connection.
