Typically at what age are you a qualified zoo veterinarian? Like 28?? I'm just wondering because at the moment i'm studying international studies, while taking prereq for vet school! I hope to one day become a zoo vet :).
hi, i was wondering if your institution does internships? i am going to college next year and majoring in zoology and then hopefully getting into vet school and would love to do an internship at your facility! please let me know. thank you!
@zealousii The National Zoo has a long history of providing training for the next generation of wildlife veterinarians. Check out our website for more information.
@m333mz As long as humans care for exotic animals, in zoos, sanctuaries, and parks, there will be a demand for zoo vets. As with many fields, it is extremely competitive, but we will always need vets.
Becoming a zoo vet does take longer! It takes about an additional four years. Typically, zoo veterinarians do an additional one to two years in small animal and exotic/wildlife/zoo medicine internships followed by a three year zoo medicine residency.
@FlameableSword100 Yes! Several of the Canadian veterinary schools offer courses in zoo medicine during the veterinary school years. A couple of them also offer zoo residencies/internships.
@FlameableSword100 Zoo vets work many long hours, and they often work weekends and holidays. However, they do occasionally also get days off like everyone else.

They do! Also amphibians, reptiles, and invertebrates. Read about them treating a fish on the "Spotlight on Vet Medicine" on our website.
