Nice job for such a short time. I've been picking only 4 weeks and just now learning Cripple Creek. I've played other instruments (trumpet and piano) and can read music, but never tried a stringed instrument. My brother-in-law had a banjo that he bought in Japan about 30 years ago, and he lent it to me to learn how to play. I'm 67, but I think this "old dog can learn a new trick." thanks for the inspiration.
You done a really good job on that, im only 14 but i believe im on your skill level. i have only played a banjo for a short amount of time but i guess i am naturally musically inclined cuz i just kinda picked it up and played.i alreadyknew my styles of picking because i play bluegrass on guitar and i am very good. You done an awesome job for just two and a-half month. keep it up and maybe you can post some how-to-videos
What are you useing to help you learn how to play? You did awesome. I've just been trying for about 2 months and I'm no where near that skilled. I've never played anything before so I'm learning but was just interested on how you learned.
@2LateIWon Ive played guitar since the age of 8, so picking up the banjo was still a learning curve, but not totally out in left field for me. I used the book that came with my banjo kit, also found some great how to videos on here. Learning how to read tabs and then hearing the song played, has helped me more than anything. If you play according to tab, then listen to how its played at speed, you should be able to get a good sense of where you need to be.
hi there great vid, could you tell me please how you recorded your backing track onto your video because the balance is great, when i do mine you can hardly hear it,im using a flip ulta hd pocket camcorder.backing is on a boss 16track played through speakers.hope you will reply, once again great vid.
That sounds sweet. I'm looking to take up the banjo myself. There's so many types out there though. It's like info overload. What make and model are you using in this video? I really like its sound.
learnin fast learningall sets and values from every scale would be the first thing to anticipate before learning fun songs too many a bluegrass artist simply learns songs for the sake of fun, instead of the advancement of their learning.
@jackfjyoung If you have some experience with the guitar, you should be able to pickup the banjo fairly quickly. If you have no stringed instrument experience, then its gonna be tough! Whatever you do, stick with it on a regular basis. I havent played often over the past year, and im extremely rusty! Keep with it if you can and you'll do fine.

thats pretty good my friend, im tryin to learn and I keep running into this song, so I spose Ill give er a go, btw, where can you find tabs for banjo? im hitting a bunch of garbage ones.
@lennonrevolver Check out Banjo Hangout, you can find some pretty good ones on there. I havent been playing much lately due to lack of time and other activities im doing. I picked it up about a month ago and realized how rusty i had got.. lol Keep pickin' and good luck!
nice job man i enjoyed that , the way i learnt was by watching a old man play it one time and when i got home i pick up my banjo and started playing ever since that was 6 years ago
I tried to learn the banjo a couple years ago and gave up after a couple weeks thinking it was just too hard. I've just started to try the banjo again and while searching for beginner lessons, I saw your video. It gave me the incentive to try and stick with it this time. If I can get anywhere close to this in 3 months, I'll be thrilled. Great, great job!!
Thanks! Since this video, i have not had alot of time to practice. It takes alot of practice. I havent played in several months. If you have time, you can get good quick, try to practice everyday for atleast 15 - 30 minutes.
I have a banjo & am wanting to learn. Have never played a stringed instrument and am wondering if I will be able to get these old hands to do the fingering! Scared to start - don't know where to start! Is using the picks on the fingers better than using the fingers alone? Is learning chords easier (definitely not easier for this rank beginner) thank fingering (or whatever it is called)? Your playing sounds so good. How long per day/week should one practice (min,)?
USE THE PICKS!!! I try to play everyday for at least 30min. I have been playing the banjo for about 2+ years, and I'm still learning. I'm 16 so the fingering isn't that hard (for me) I don't know how "young" you are (and I don't need to know) but, the only thing that will make you better is to practice. If you are just starting out, I would say to find a teacher, if you find the right one, they will get you on the path to be a good banjo player.
I dont know how old you are peggy, But i started playing at55 , having never picked up any instument, i i can play reasonably well. try janet davis,s book you can play 5 string banjo. A good book to start on . buckcreekman
I played the guitar for about 10 years prior to getting a banjo, so im sure thats helped my progress some. But no when i took this video i had been playing for 2 1/2 months.
I just wanted to thank everyone for the comments! I dont play as often as i wish i could now days, got alot of other projects and activities going on. I've learned 3 more songs since this one, maybe i will get a chance to post them soon. Thanks again!
there is another hide man playing too? =/ an amazing sound brother, in brazil there is no bluegrass banjo but i got one from usa one month ago, what a great instrument... in 2 years you'll look like an orchestra! good!
Very good for 2-1/2 months, your timing is great. Here's something interesting you could try. Try adding Banjo in the Hollow as a break in the middle of Cripple Creek.
Tell me about it, I play a song perfectly all day, but as soon as I turn the darn camera on, everything goes wrong! Most of my videos were done after 10 or 12 takes as well. Yeah, I usually on't worry about speed that much at first, cause after you get the song memorized and play it accurate, the speed comes with time. But accuracy is way more important than speed, especially for beginners. Everyone would rather listen to a slow, but accurate song than a bunch of ear-hurtin mistakes played fast!
Hell yeah, hoss! Dang, you got a lot better and there's NO mistakes whatsoever, great rhythm, just plain awesome! 5 stars and favored, without a doubt! Great job, for real, man!
LOL thanks man. This was about take # 10 or 12 before i finally got one where i didn't mess up! I found out that in order to gain speed, you just gotta go for it and keep doing it over and over messing up or not until you get fast enough.
Ok, I remember and it did seem like a houseful at Donna's that day. How do I add you to my account in here? I have a couple of friends here at YouTube but don't remember how I got them! I memory is just about shot, just ask Donna! LOL Hope to see ya soon too, Mack
