Hey what a nice vid! The first serious one about sickle combat. The other one about the flail is also very good. I am getting interested and trying to make a reconstruction by myself. How do you made the training weapons?
on the last move. You are breaking the stance at the wrong angle. Go halfway between his feet and 90 degrees outward from that point, pull down and he will fall into your sickle. If you use a whipping wave motion you can get his chin out and fill the sickle with his neck instead. That would make more sense for a neat kill.
@8stepsifu Thanks. Now that I have a different translation I realize that we were doing the last part all wrong. I would still like to go back and try your idea at some point. It sounds very cool.
Sweet vid. Great use of slomo and pause to basically create "video plates" equivalent to the ancient texts. Much more useful. And bonus points for choosing such an interesting weapon to display.
@NevTheDeranged .. Thanks. I kinda stole the idea from my pals at MEMAG, they put together very nice videos using a similar method. I am very interested in the Sickle but I have had a hard time finding translations of the rest of the pages. :-(
Nice work! I especially like your flail videos. Using our group account I just posted a video response with our interpretation of page 1 of PHM's sickle. I hope it helps you! Good luck and train safe!
A wonderful demonstration as always, and in a way is remanicent of our knife defence work.
As always I'd be intrested in talking about the techniques and their development, as well as looking at the original text for the fourth move and working through it.
While pulling him with your left and right, try to use your right hand as If you would try to underhook Orange´s Arm. Your Wrist will turn and the Sickle will place along his throat. Orange possibly loses the control of your right Hand while doing that. Use Search for "Langes Messer" 0.45.
But! if I can allow me a all small remark?! At the beginning, the black blocks the sickle of the adversary, with its sickle (but the sickles are very fragile) I think that best would be, that the black blocks the wrist (or the Advent arm) of the adversary (in the current position, it is easy), that avoids damaging the edge of its sickle (wounding the adversary at the same time, which prevents that the orange adversary can take again the initiative.).
It was a difficult choice to hook the Sickle instead of the arm. Mair does not make it clear what is being hooked in the Second Play. But think about this... when Orange responds to Black in the Third Play and throws Black to the ground, he would have still received a painful cut to the wrist. I don't think I would be able to continue fighting back after getting a slash to my wrist.
Yes you are right! I agree completely with you! It is precisely the reason for which I made you this remark. The final goal of experimental archaeology must remain
Credibility (in a context of real combat!? what would choose to be done?), but! what wants to say engravings? Are they propaganda? successions of movements are they of which the only goal and the drive of the body and reflexes (Like a kata?!)
Are they a fantasmée vision of the combat (as in our films of today)? in any case they should not be seen as one collect fixed techniques!! (Which fight tested, would fall into gears, of which he knows the outcome? the base even of the combat, is to surprise the adversary!)
In this case does, fight it orange would not have you it simply not been able to shorten its blow, not to be wounded with the wrist?? (Test this! the orange attacks/the black blocks with the wrist/orange withdraws its wrist not to be wounded, then catches the leg of the black)
Here! I hope that you include/understand my bad English! Thank you! So long!
Very cool! Nicely done and great topic. If I may, the only thing I would point out is the lack of foot work, you seemed to be reaching a bit. Looked great though, keep it up. :)
Thanks for the comment. This video actualy documents the very first time working with the translated material. So things are pretty raw. Mair doesn't mention any footwork in the page, so we didn't try to add anything extra. Looking at it now, it's seems possible to include some 'shuffle' steps to adjust distance without changing the stance.
I see. It is a great video either way and it is nice to see you guys out there. :) I am hoping to get some Gerard Thibault (1630) out there soon, but we are still too new at it to be showing it to the public. It is always inspiring to see others doing the same types of things with WMA. Thanks for the videos and keep it comming!
I'm glad I'm a lefty, messes up some people's timing. =D

Hi, great video! Informative and well put together. One question: the sound-track rocks. What is it called and who performs it?

Thanks for the nice comment. Sorry for the late reply. Do they still use Sickles for farming in the Kibbutzim over there in Israel?

This is really nice, ya heard ?
I´m impressed and would really like to show you my experiences. I´ve got a little trick for the last move which was different because of the drawing.
Look at 2:14 (Black):
While pulling him with your left and right, try to use your right hand as If you would try to underhook Orange´s Arm. Your Wrist will turn and the Sickle will place along his throat. Orange possibly loses the control of your right Hand while doing that. Use Search for "Langes Messer" 0.45.

I accept your challenge! So what shall it be? Sickles at Sunrise? Longswords at Lunch? Or Daggers at Dusk?

Awful alliteration is more like it.
