Actually I had seen at the CES the showing of primitive hologram technology, it was really neat to experience. I really think that holograms will be the direction that the future of entertainment tech will go. Another form of 3D to look for is called autostereoscopic. These are displays with the filter on the screen. I think I heard that some Samsung models may be coming out with this or they already do. No more active or passive glasses to wear. I can't say whether this will still mess with your eyes or cause headaches for some.

You could also look into ChromaDepth 3D. You do have to wear their glasses but it works with virtually any existing image or video (SD and HD).

There is a current technology called "volumetric" which is viewer independent free floating 3D images. As far as I know it does not limit the number of people who can see the image or video. You do not have to wear 3D glasses either. So when you're thinking of projections in three dimensional space like in Star Wars or Iron Man this is the same deal. anyways it is worth looking into.
