  • I wonder if it will make my grandpas dick hard too? ¬.¬

  • Dewar, thermos and vacuum all the same eh?

  • Thanks Pete for an advise. Now I don't need a broom. I am going to clean floor with nitrogen.

  • @thesweetalchemist: it is an asphyxiant so unknown nitrogen spills are quite dangerous in labs and the like as you don't notice the asphyxiation, you can still breathe normally even when it has displaced the oxygen, you're likely to faint before you realize there's a big nitrogen spill, however it takes a while with the windows shut for you to suffocate and a decent amount spilled, i would hope these guys are smart enough that they'd air the room out soon after doing that.

  • Isn't spilling liquid nitrogen in a small room like that will cause suffocation?

  • @TheSweetalchemist I've seen them do experiments where they use liquid nitrogen and just tip it onto the floor after they've demonstrated. it doesn't do much harm, but then again all of the chemistry lecture halls are built with huge suction fans above the front desks...

  • Yeah, actually just if you want to know - they use the cold nitrogen in dermatology for the skin to relax after it has been damaged in some way... I've felt it when they

put it on my face and it just feels so nice...

  • How strong of a container would you need to hold liquid nitrogen at room temperature? So strong that it's just cheaper to make more and just store it at atmospheric pressure?

  • @Ormaaj - The liquid nitrogen IS stored at room temperature. Liquid nitrogen is so cold because it's evaporation to a gas is highly endothermic, which brings the temperature down.

  • @MrSmudger687 The phase is related to the pressure it's stored at. At higher pressures Nitrogen like all other gasses boils at higher temperatures.

  • "When they're suitably anethetized" LOL, I love how he had to clarify that!

  • "like a liquid" but it is a liquid

  • something to use instead of glasses

  • haha! i luv his hair!!!

  • what lenses is he talking about

  • @TitanREW The natural lenses in your eyes. It sounds really interesting. I wonder where one might find the eye treatment he described.

  • Is it true that you can stick your hand into liquid nitrogen for less than 2 seconds and it will not freeze instantly because of the ledinfrost effect?

  • @micnof Yes. Although I wouldn't put my hand in there for a full two seconds. Or even one.

  • @micnof well, I guess 2 seconds is pretty much, but if you pull your hand out right after, you'll be fine

  • @micnof true, but I would not do it

  • @micnof Yeah. It's still pretty cold, though, just from all of the cold nitrogen gas.

  • liquid nitrogen = best floor cleaning product

  • People get dimond rings because carbon is non reactive?

  • One word to describe these people, Brilliant.

  • did i say oxygen is water, idiot.... i need to read what i type

  • Is there a simple way to create NOx from air?

  • no there isn't,you definitely cant do it at home.

to make NOx from air you need high pressure, catalyzers and temperature.

its much easier to get it by heating nitrates.

  • lol i put a carrot in Liquid nitrogen

  • so if my plants are lacking nitrogen that means needs more air? & oxygen is water correct, basic stuff i never absorbed, thanks

  • Plants get nitrogen from soil. Some plants have bacteria in them which make compounds of nitrogen that plants can use, but most plants do not have these bacteria and have to get the nitrogen compounds that they need from the soil they're planted in.

  • so another dumb quest, what is nitrogen, i grow using hydroponic method, thanks u

  • I don't understand your question. What is nitrogen? N, element 7...

  • @GreaserChrist1 Plants usually have plenty of air, it's nitrates that they need.

  • @analemma2345thanks i live up in the mountains at 6500 ft should i be doing sumthing different, thanks

  • @GreaserChrist1 Thats a little sad... No, if you plants need nitrogen, they need nitrogen containing compounds such as nitrates and nitrites. Oxygen is oxygen and water is a compound of hydrogen and oxygen. Hence H2O

  • maybe I just don't understand enough about chemistry to even bother asking, but would it be out of line to suppose that in some of the coldest parts of the world, these gases would/could exist in liquid form?

  • Coldest parts of the world are -196 °C (boiling point of nitrogen?)? xD

Lowest ever recorded temperature on earth was −189.2°C (−128.6°F) at the Russian Vostok Station in Antarctica July 21, 1983.

So no, you can't find them like that.

You can find even frozen nitrogen in triton's poles (Neptune's moon's). It has a melting point of -210 °C (-346 °F) or 63 Kelvin (absolute).

So you can imagine it's cold on Triton.

  • Actually, it wasn't -189, is was -89.

  • that stuff isnt cheap and theyre pouring it on the floor!! haha

  • 3:38 LOL..

  • Little sadist :D

  • A very funny gas.Great!

  • :))))) funny

  • Most explosives contains single N atoms in the monecules, and when it detonates, the N atoms reacts to form N2. The more nitrogen, the more powderful explosive!(For some types of explosives..)

  • Forgot to mention that it's because the N want so mutch to be N2. Just look up different explosives. All of them contains free N atoms..

    Boom! =P

  • Haha :D

  • Holy-Terrorist:>*=* RHEEEUUUH

  • Triple Bonds. Dont even wanna go there man.

  • @culwin its not sexual, it is homogenic though :P

  • @culwin yeah just like you with your teddy bear...

  • @RudivanHemert Hey, you leave Teddy out of this!!

  • @RudivanHemert sounds like an insult? why?

  • yes im sure the children of his that he mentioned in one of the videos were just dropped on his doorstep

  • how long can you store it?

  • wattapassa: It can range from a few days to a few weeks in a Dewar flask.

  • I love it I've always wanted to get my hands on some to play with it freezing stuff Dr. Freeze haha

  • this element in liquid format scares the sheeeit outta me

  • the human body is made of with cells consisting of 65-90% water by weight , making the body's mass 65% Oxygen and 10% Hydrogen , 99 percent of the humans body mass is made up of just SIX elements, oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitroge n,calcium, phosphorus

would you guys make a periodic table of elements of the human body and explain all of the atomistic and molecular functions in the human body to the best of your abilities? Namaste my friends

  • alot of the molecules in the himan body is very large and complex, many of them are still not understood by humans yet. these guys feild of expertise are chemistry in materials, if you want to know about chemical in living things you'll need to look at a specific section call "bio chemistry".

  • A human being is a microcosm, the same laws which govern our cosmos also govern the most minutest spaces in a human being

  • if you're looking at the basic principles then it's same. but if you're looking at how molecules interacts in human and it's alot more complex since there's so much things involved and so much chemical reactions going on at one time

  • Of course they will! Thats because you asked so nicely and your opinion matters so much. Not really, like in the real world nobody cares what you say.

  • korrahl Id be careful on who you talk to like that

  • OK, but im not you. Isn't that great? Now carry on and continue with your carefull life my 1337 typing friend.

  • overclocking your computers cpu is awesome when using liquid nitrogen!! :)

  • Thank you, interesting video.

  • 2:50 is fantastic!! love it!!

  • Nice

liquid Nitrogen as a cleaning utensil

  • it is obvious that you cant just stick your hand into liquid Nitrogen but how is it that you can cook with it and eat it i have seen this done plenty of times

  • Do you cook things with your fridge?

  • weird comment on the video about squirting liquid nitrogen onto someone's leg as a joke ... that guy needs to find a more demanding job

  • I have an uncle whose last name in the finnish word for nitrogen.. No joke.

  • lol you can take the lens out of somebodies eye, when they are suitably anesthetized. lol he didn't want people going around and just pulling the lens out of each others eyes.

  • why does the nitrogen syphon up through the tube? is it that wierd superfluid behaviour of climbing up the walls of a container, or something else?

  • nah just the force of gaseous nitrogen forcing some of the liquid out. try it with some very rapidly boiling water.

  • Liquid nitrogen is relatively warm. Superfluid like behavior doesn't happen until closer to absolute 0.

  • Liquid nitrogen is very cold

    -196*C

  • Liquid helium is 271 °C.

  • Obviously, helium and nitrogen are not the same.

And Helium can't exist as a liquid a 271*C. If it's a gas at 20*C, it should still be a gas at 271*C, if we follow the laws of thermodynamics.

  • -271 °C.

  • Not at 1 atm pressure.

And also he has the closest temperature difference between solid and liquid,.

  • what happen if you break the lens? oops, sorry, you're blind now.

  • l o l you're funny

  • Awesome video, thanks a lot for hte effort.

  • had NOs while i was in labour with my kids. short labours + NOs= a great night out. getting handed a baby at the end is like the hangover lololol

  • Nitrous oxide is the best thing ever made!!! I broke my leg and was given all the nitrous oxie I wanted while they set my leg and I just laughed my ass of for an hour!! BEST STUFF EVER MADE!!!

  • The stuff is great. A mate bought a whole box of whippets - little nitrous oxide canisters used for the food industry for some reason. He made a cracker out of a piece of pipe, to open the valve and we would fill balloons with them and inhale 2 or 3. It was hillarious.

  • If only you could have some whenever you wanted! Just laugh the day away!

  • I really love these videos - thanks!

  • Everything fun in life has to do with nitro!

    Nitroglycerine! fun fun fun !!!

Nitromethane, how to extract 7000HP from a V8!

Nitrous oxide = a pure laghing matter!!

  • nitrogen narcosis = best way to get drunk! No hangover!!

Liquid nitrogen! overclock your PC to the max!! Fun fun fun!!

Did you know that earths atmosphere is almost 80% nitrogen?!!? That's probably why you are smiling now! =o)

  • Best. Video. Ever. LN is wicked awesome.

  • can someone bring me up to speed about waht that old man said at the end?

  • basically you can correct an eye problem by freezing the lens of the eye altering the focus length then defrost the lens

  • in some very clever sight-corrective surgery, you remove the lens from the eye very carefully in a delicate operation.

then you freeze it, and you can actually use a LATHE to skim bits off the lens to create the correct shape. crazy, right?

sounds a bit grisly, but i imagine it works a treat. the crystals from freezing would be really tiny, because of the quick freezing process, so the lens itself shouldn't be damaged internally.

  • oookkk. again thats something we can all think about

  • but dont we already have lasic eye surgery?

  • i should get a liquid nitrogen to clean up the accumulated dust in my room... :D

  • hi doc, about the strongest bond of N:

which form has N in our atmosphere, N2?

in a vacum chamber, would N react differently than at sea level pressure?

and ionization or magnetic fields could produce that implosion?

ps: your periodic table of videos is better than wikipedia !!!

    CIAO from italy =D

  • Hi. Yes, atmospheric nitrogen is N2. N2 doesn't react very well at all. The point of a vacuum chamber is to get rid of the gasses. Since N2 is a gas, that would disappear too. However, if you mean just having it at low pressure then yes, it would be a less reactive with the few things it does react with eg Lithium. Nitrogen isn't affected by magnetic fields very much at all though, like all matter, it can be ionised unless at ridiculous high temperature. I don't know what you mean by implosion.

  • hi AlmightScoop, thx 4 your time. i have a friend who is a truck driver, and once he was carrying LN. after the delivery he forgot to leave opened the tank, and the next morning the huge tank on his truck collapsed on itself?!?

which kind of reaction can bend an 8 mm steel tank? N2 into single N, the opposite, or else...

excuse my english, regards AT ;)))

  • Hi. I don't think that is due to a chemical reaction. N2 is very unreactive. I'm not sure what happened to your friends truck. Normally there is a pressure sensitive valve which releases gas if the pressure builds up. It is possible that the tank released the gas, cooling it down, and the valve got frozen open. More gas released, futher cooling the vehicle. The low temperature could weaken the structure, or the the vacuum insulation could've failed. I don't really know.

  • hi AlmightScoop, the temperature (from cold to hot) would have caused an explosion, instead the tank imploded. could it be possible that N2 release would produce a vacuum by preventing outside air going back in to an empty tank?

    regards AT =D

  • Sure, a vacuum is the only thing I can think of that would cause an implosion. I'm not really sure what happened. Perhaps there were two chambers. One full and one empty. The cooling from the evaporating liquid nitrogen in one chamber causing the air in the other chamber to condense and form a vacuum. Then the empty chamber collapses under the weight of the atmosphere. That seems plausible although I'm really not sure what went on.

  • Hi AudioToys. I found a great video demonstrating the effect proposed to be responsible for the fate of your friend's tanker.

    /watch?v=Tkg4gM8p1dI&feature=related

It shows how cooling can cause a can to implode. Tell me what you think.

  • Anybody like to volunteer for the experiment mentioned at the end of the video? :)

  • ya, me, i dont need em, after that joke you just makde, OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoo

    =D

  • agree with bacardi. this is so much more interesting than classes. My son will use these to help him pass chemistry. Thanks for putting these up they are brilliant.

  • Why no one made these last year when I was failing chemistry is a wonder.

    I'm enjoying these Haiku though!

  • Another haiku:

    The sky's silent referee

    Without its calming effect

    Oxygen will burn

  • omg...THIZ IZ MUCH better than all those letures in class :|

  • Great videos!
