@navymidclass15 I know, all this video does is kind of make OCS look like fun and from somebody who went through juniors and seniors, it was far from fun. Oorahh!!
I will be graduating with my Bachelors in June and still not entirely sure about what I want out of life. I am really interested in law enforcement and the idea of making a difference. College has changed me, but I still feel that I need some other form of life developing to occur. I feel like I'm lacking something in life. The military has always been an option for me. For all you USMC Officers out there... how life changing/developing is this?
not everybody can do good for his country only a few, many have tried but only few survived, if you want the world to see you join in the marines and find out yourself what behind that title thats keeps them moving on, so stand fast
some of these PFT requirements worry me, iv been workin my ass off for a year and iv gotten really big but its only made it harder for pullups and running :(
you're not working our porperly. OCS PT is centered around endurance and stamina more than anything. If you're going in the gym and pumping iron for 2 hours, you are not doing the right things.
be yourself, be in shape, put up with the crazy motard crap, and dont take anything personally even if its directed straight at you (tough skin). Everything else is taught to you by the numbers, you either get it or you dont, just listen. And dont ever be afraid to ask any question of any Marine, you will get yelled at no matter what even if its a good/stupid q. Dont be the candidate who pisses himself every time he has to report to the duty hut.
Any candidate going to OCS: be a good runner (at least 20 min 3 mile), strong upper body, and a set of balls to take charge as well as accomplish tasks with intensity. Candidates usually are the ones that make life harder for themselves there.
this is the marine corps, let alone marine OFFICER candidate school. 18 min is a perfect score for your pft, and the 3 miles is the shortest distance you will run. the slowest time allowed for entry into ocs is 24 min three mile. my recommendation to be successful is start working yourself toward the 20> min mark: closer to 18 min you are the better.

I have known guys to make it through OCS with runtimes up to 23 minutes, it is all mental. If you want to make it, and you know why you're there, and stay motivated, you will march across that parade deck on graduation day. Don't believe the hype, it is largely mental.
No dude. I did 21 minutes for 3 miles when I was in the Marine Corps. That is not that bad. You will eventually get better and thats the point of OCS or bootcamp. They wouldn't have physical training if everybody came in all strong. So don't be too worried.
@blakzab 20 minutes is not hauling ass. We had a candidate run the pft in just under 15 minutes, that's hauling ass. As an officer candidate, you should strive for perfection, at least a 18 min run time. If you run 21-22 it's going to be a hard time for you to keep up at OCS, but it is doable.
@queefer02 , I completely disagree with this. I wasnt the best runner, I went in running a 22:30, and I had little to no trouble with the running at OCS (my fastest @ OCS was a 20:57/Final PFT). Striving for the an 18, and all that moto stuff is well and good, but the fact remains, there are many MARINE OFFICERS who dont run 18's or 19's, or even 20's for that matter. And the candidate that ran a 15 is not the norm, I promise you. OCS is 80% mental, and 20% physical....seriously.
Richie, are you doing PLC or OCC? I'll be at 2nd Inc PLC in the summer of 2010! The best advice I have gotten so far is to just stay on top of your PFT. PT your ass off so you're in good shape when you get there. You can learn the ropes of things quickly once you get there, but you can't become physically prepared over night.
I am in the PLC program and am going to OCS in summer 2010. I have to say after 20 years, these past few months have been the most challenging and painful days of my life.
candidate billet holders have insignias over the red velvet to identify them selves. we also wore woodlands instead of deserts so the staff knew who were the candidates
No. Every candidate regardless of whether or not they are already a Marine, is put in a leadership billet (indicated by the red felt below the collar insignias) to be evaluated on their leadership abilities. So throughout your time at OCS, you will wear that little red square at least twice no matter who you are.
Nasty candidates, nasty sleeve rolls, nasty formations... just nasty... Oh man, OCS, most fun I never want to have again... Well, not as a candidate. Good days, good memories. Don't drink the quigley water its been known to cause sickness...
@Puppyblade86 is the quigley the canal with snakes in it? i heard about it but im not sure..,im a junior in highschool and im going through OCS when i graduate college, since you have already been through it can you tell me everything you know about it? if its not asking to much that is...im just curious as to what ill be going through in 5 years.
I agree with cahx85. Why are you so butthurt over this video dude? So what, he mixed it to rap music, boohoo. Suck it the fuck up and keep moving forward. Seriously, are you demanding he take this video down because of the music? Give me a fuckin break bro. Imagine that, graduate OCS with all the manliness and toughness there is, and than get butthurt over a video on youtube.
I am certain I want to be an officer. I was mainly torn between the two because of the attrition rate. I would never quit, but if I WAS one of the 30+% to get dropped, I would want to be able to do it again. That's the main reason I was thinking of doing it the summers after my Sophmore and Junior years. That way if anything happened, I could go my Senior summer. Good thinking or no?
If you have the option to take the two 6 weeks route, go for it. They both have their benefits. The option is there, go for it. No need to wait till you graduate or are a junior in college.
I'm doing combined because that's the only program I can do because I'm a junior. I wish I knew that I wanted to do this earlier because your base pay starts as soon as you start PLC... So if you go to PLC Juniors (as a sophomore), go back to two more years of college and then commission, you start out as a 2nd LT with 2 years of service which ups your pay significantly!
at 3:17 is probably a Corpsman working out of one of the humvees along the OCS trails, these are hospital Corpsmen which are not assigned to a platoon during a specific cycle; they are always present on runs, PT events, field events, etc standing with a Marine humvee driver along the trails just as precaution. You'll be essing them all the time at PT and in the field.
that's my platoon at 4:05 Golf 3. That's GySgt Dangle getting his rifle inspected by Capt. Moulder awesome platoon commander and a great group of guys.
Capt Moulder? is it really? i thought it looked like him, but i couldnt see the whole face so i was unsure. he is now the MOI at george washington university. great officer, great leader.
I know right. Probobly lived in Berkeley. Hehe. So if you graduated last year you would have completed TBS by now. What is your MOS? Because i'm applying for OCS and at TBS my main choice for a MOS is 0302. But LAV officer sounds cool to. Any advice?
No, I commissioned Dec 20th, TBS in May 09. Most of the guys in my OCS platoon commissioned in May of 08 and have been at TBS with Alpha since October. I was 0311 as an enlisted Marine, and infantry is on my list of top choices at TBS, either that or 0202 with ground intel being at the top. If you get infantry you have the opportunity to go 0303 as an Lav officer, since all Lav officers have to be 0302's.
Shit sir? Why the long wait from commissioning to TBS. And I thought about being prior-enlisted would help me at OCS but now I focus on leadership more than anything. I am taking a leadership class and it is no surprise that my unofficial motto is Ductus Exemplo
TBS is extremely backed up from what my friends in Alpha told me. Plus PLC Lieutenants, on average, have usually had to wait longer for TBS than officers from other commissioning programs. A friend of mine who commissioned in August of 08 isn't reporting until March 09 with Charlie, so he is having to wait longer than me. Being a prior can help, but it really depends on what kind of person, and what kind of Marine you are.
Well then I guess that's good. Spend some time with your family/girlfriend and they tell you how proud of you they are. Whereas graduating from one of the MCRDs you get a 10 day furlough and then have orders to report to SOI. And after SOI its off to your Bn. So yeah, sounds like a different life. And thanks for the advice on being prior.
Prior enlisted had a leg up on the rest of us rookies when we reported for PLC. By the third week though the gap closed and from then until the end it was primarily all about being judged analyzed for leadership potential.
LAV is an 0302 in LAR in charge of a platoon of LAVs. So you put 0302 number 1 on your list and hopefully get LAV's from there. Basically infantry in a light armored vehicle.
I know a 2ndLt who's going to 2nd LAR Bn at Camp Lejuene, I could ask him some stuff abotu the MOS once he gets into it and send you a PM with that info. Obviously, he'll only let me know certain things, he wont go in depth with it buecause I really dont rate too know to much. But you're priority should be completing OCS, then worry about MOS's at TBS. Who knows, you might get to TBS and have a change of heart.
yes, and I am positive that is CAPT Hume, he cussed at the night land nav briefing because some candidates were still cammie painting their faces, it was hilarious and scary at the same time.... "STOP FUCKING CAMMIE PAINTING yOUR FUCKING FACES!!!!!!! ...... GOD DAAAAAAAAMMMIT!"
HAHA. Yeah I remember that. The scary thing about it though is that the SI's were lurking around, and if you run afoul of a staff member, especially an officer, it was gonna be hell to pay for the whole company even if it was only a few candidates. I still dont think that is Captain Hume in this video, its hard to tell though, so for all I know it could be.
You need to talk to your recruiter and have him schedule a consult back at MEPs. If it won't affect your ability to perform, they will still let you be a candidate. But if it is a serious hearing loss Marine OCS isn't for you.
i've been checking these ocs vids out recently...where are you all getting these pics from?? i was there summer of '03 and the only pics i have are that platoon shot we got at the end and a good shot i got with my instructors...other than that if the instructors saw a camera it was time for an essay...anyways to everyone on this post semper fi and
For anyone who was down there this summer for 2nd Increment Juniors; Do you guys know where the camera crews filming India Company were from? If there is an OCS documentary coming out soon based on I Co. summer '08 2ndInc, I wanna know about that shit because Im definitely in it.
I/1 2nd Inc. We had Captain Miller as Platoon commander. And Capt Hume was good to go! One of the best Marine officers I've ever met and a great guy all around.
Gotta love the bridge to the chow hall!!! socal do it, even if you dont become an officer it is the best experience you can ever have, you will come out a man and have a sick ass high and tight. OCS is the shit!
Make sure your eyesight is good and no other disqualifying physical traits. Back in my days (1979-1992), we referred to flight school as the long road to infantry officer training. Even with a guarenteed air contract in those days, if you got dropped from flight they usually sent you back to Camp Barrett to IOC.
We used to call them fallen angels. They had been the guys in TBS with the safety goggles on when we went to the field for exercises.
I was I Co. 4th. Plt. 1st. Inc. 2007 and I'm heading back to Sr's on 090522. Can't wait to get that shit done and finally earn that title that we would all kill for. Good luck to everyone that is about to ship out and gold bless. Semper Fi, may we all be a "Band of Brothers". KILLL!
Hmm, I was there for the 2nd Increment I wonder if someone is going to make a video for us but you know what it doesn't matter cause I am done with that bitch!!! E Co 2nd Plt Get Some...
As bad as I wanted to get out of that place while I was there, now I'm actually missing it for many reasons, mainly because I'm a nasty civilian now. And o yeah, I gotta get me some Otis Spunkmeyers ASAP. What co./plt you from pancatva?
are you serious? maybe for the Army. a 10 week crucible that brings out the man in you. it is a right of passage that teaches integrity, teamwork, and accountibility
You know exactly what is waiting for you on the 2nd trip when you arrive. The only change for me between Jr 1979 and Sr 1980 was they stopped thumping candidates.
1980 they didn't dare touch you in any manner unless to correct manual of arms. 1979 it was not unheard of to get punched in the chest, stomach or ribs. NEVER in the face like full metal jacket style slaps.
PLC Jr/SR used to have the highest attrition rate of any Marine OCS program.
Today it depends sir, 10 weks progresses a little slower PT wise, but candidates are more prone to injury since its 10 weeks. The seniors portion of PLC is a kick in the ass from what I understand. The worst is probably NROTC single 6 weeks.
From my experience, I thought PLC Juniors was much harder, both physically and mentally. And the attrition rate was higher when I went through Jrs than Srs. Granted my time there was in the summers of 06 and 07, but there was a different CO in 06, much tougher in my opinion.

If you get infantry you have the opportunity to go 0303 as an Lav officer, since all Lav officers have to be 0302's.
chesty45 3 years ago
Shit sir? Why the long wait from commissioning to TBS. And I thought about being prior-enlisted would help me at OCS but now I focus on leadership more than anything. I am taking a leadership class and it is no surprise that my unofficial motto is Ductus Exemplo
kong8765 3 years ago
TBS is extremely backed up from what my friends in Alpha told me. Plus PLC Lieutenants, on average, have usually had to wait longer for TBS than officers from other commissioning programs. A friend of mine who commissioned in August of 08 isn't reporting until March 09 with Charlie, so he is having to wait longer than me. Being a prior can help, but it really depends on what kind of person, and what kind of Marine you are.
chesty45 3 years ago
Well then I guess that's good. Spend some time with your family/girlfriend and they tell you how proud of you they are. Whereas graduating from one of the MCRDs you get a 10 day furlough and then have orders to report to SOI. And after SOI its off to your Bn. So yeah, sounds like a different life. And thanks for the advice on being prior.
kong8765 3 years ago
Prior enlisted had a leg up on the rest of us rookies when we reported for PLC. By the third week though the gap closed and from then until the end it was primarily all about being judged analyzed for leadership potential.
CHIKENLITTLE92 2 years ago
LAV is an 0302 in LAR in charge of a platoon of LAVs. So you put 0302 number 1 on your list and hopefully get LAV's from there. Basically infantry in a light armored vehicle.
scooniepenn 3 years ago
and if you're in an LAV or an LAR Co. then most likely you are part of a task force rollin' in. Thanks sir.
kong8765 3 years ago
I know a 2ndLt who's going to 2nd LAR Bn at Camp Lejuene, I could ask him some stuff abotu the MOS once he gets into it and send you a PM with that info. Obviously, he'll only let me know certain things, he wont go in depth with it buecause I really dont rate too know to much. But you're priority should be completing OCS, then worry about MOS's at TBS. Who knows, you might get to TBS and have a change of heart.

Capt. Mays @ 2:43
109PH 3 years ago
You know Captain Mays? He was my OSO back when I was a Candidate.
chesty45 3 years ago
sure do, he was always around for PLC
109PH 3 years ago
2:43 is CAPT Hume, he was my XO while I was there, CAPT Mays was my platoon commander
ponce506412 3 years ago
I dont think thats Captain Hume though. That guy is a little bit taller than he was. And Captain Hume was blondish and had a different haircut.
scooniepenn 3 years ago
Capt Mays was the black Platoon commander right?
scooniepenn 3 years ago
yes, and I am positive that is CAPT Hume, he cussed at the night land nav briefing because some candidates were still cammie painting their faces, it was hilarious and scary at the same time.... "STOP FUCKING CAMMIE PAINTING yOUR FUCKING FACES!!!!!!! ...... GOD DAAAAAAAAMMMIT!"
ponce506412 3 years ago
HAHA. Yeah I remember that. The scary thing about it though is that the SI's were lurking around, and if you run afoul of a staff member, especially an officer, it was gonna be hell to pay for the whole company even if it was only a few candidates. I still dont think that is Captain Hume in this video, its hard to tell though, so for all I know it could be.
scooniepenn 3 years ago
haha, I remember this...hilarious. Capt. Hume is quite the curser.

Is that Major Schreiner at 6:39?
scooniepenn 3 years ago
nah, the Majors' flat top was much sharper, the officer at 6:39 has a head that is too rounded for Major Schreiner

Just got unofficially DQ'd for a hearing loss in my right ear... anyone have any advice?
kgj08 3 years ago
yeah get your masters
dortega13 3 years ago
You need to talk to your recruiter and have him schedule a consult back at MEPs. If it won't affect your ability to perform, they will still let you be a candidate. But if it is a serious hearing loss Marine OCS isn't for you.

jggrmson 3 years ago
well..., two very different callings.

How long is OCS? 2 weeks?
Fuzionrider 3 years ago
are you serious? maybe for the Army. a 10 week crucible that brings out the man in you. it is a right of passage that teaches integrity, teamwork, and accountibility
kong8765 3 years ago
or 2 6 weeks sessions
Stallion518 3 years ago
No offense, the two six week summers are worse.
Spreadspectrum59 3 years ago
Today it depends sir, 10 weks progresses a little slower PT wise, but candidates are more prone to injury since its 10 weeks. The seniors portion of PLC is a kick in the ass from what I understand. The worst is probably NROTC single 6 weeks.
scooniepenn 3 years ago
From my experience, I thought PLC Juniors was much harder, both physically and mentally. And the attrition rate was higher when I went through Jrs than Srs. Granted my time there was in the summers of 06 and 07, but there was a different CO in 06, much tougher in my opinion.
chesty45 3 years ago
I agree with Chesty! I was Jrs07 Snrs08
