  • Please Larry, can you tell me the what the music piece is beginning at about 3:11? I love it! I'm sure I've heard it in a movie. Thank you!

  • @abbyrose53 It's from the movie Shawshank Redemption. Larry Hobbs

  • @larryshobbs THANK YOU! Great music.

  • @abbyrose53 You're welcome. Larry Hobbs

  • I read some article that taken 500mg or more can cause liver damage, Is this true?

  • @666katch Large doses of niacin can elevate liver enzymes, which indicates liver damage, but the dose is very high. Some people take 2000 or 3000 mg to improve cholesterol levels. Abram Hoffer MD PhD treated schizophrenics with large doses of niacin, giving some people up to 6000 mg per day. In the late-1980's there were some cases of liver problems in people taking time-released niacin, but one doctor said time-release niacin should be used at half the dose of regular niacin. Larry Hobbs

  • @larryshobbs A couple days ago, i received my blood test results and it states i have elevated bilburin levels(TBIL,IBIL) I take niacin daily, around 3-4 grams.. do you think that is the reason why my bilburin levels are elevated?

  • @frankasaur914 Frank, I don't know, but it certainly could be. The easiest way to find out is simply stop the niacin for month, and then have your liver enzymes checked again. Do a Google search for "niacin bilirubin" and you will find lots of articles talking about it. Larry Hobbs

  • getting good results to niacinimide treating anxiety since i stopped eating wheat and eggs due to intolerances to them. ;-)

  • @permanentbliss1 Thanks for letting us know about your experience with niacinamide and stopping wheat and eggs. Larry Hobbs

  • why does she say NIOCINAMIDE but the screen shot states NICOTINAMIDE

    which is it?

  • @abouTimelord Nicotinamide is also known as niacinamide. They are both Vitamin B3. They are the same thing. They do NOT cause flushing. Niacin is also vitamin B3. Niacin DOES cause flushing. Niacin is also called nicotinic acid. Niacin improves cholesterol levels, whereas niacinamide doe NOT. I think Dr. Larson prefers niacinamide because she says it gets into the brain better. Larry Hobbs
  • @larryshobbs

thanks for that, i am waiting on book delivery so will understand better soon

however it must have been another site that was stating that the flushing was a good thing as it allowed one to know the dosage needed, cheers

  • @abouTimelord The doctor who had been giving his patients large doses of niacin for 25 or 35 years said that 100 mg of niacin causes the same amount of flushing as 1000 mg of niacin, so it seems to me that the amount of flushing would not tell you the right dose.

I've taken niacin for many years, & I get flushing after each dose.

Sometimes I get more flushing, and sometimes less, depending on what foods I have eaten.

So the amount of flushing tells me nothing about the dose.

  • @larryshobbs

thanks again Larry, ok does that mean that say in your case you take Niacin for high cholesterol

in my case i have high cholesterol and depressive symptoms so would one choose Niancin or Niacinamide?

  • @abouTimelord I don't know what my cholesterol levels are. I take niacin because Abram Hoffer, MD, PhD found that it normalized cholesterol levels.

Dr. Hoffer also found that in his patients given large doses of niacin, that they had lower rates of cancer.

If I wanted to try vitamin B 3 for depressive symptoms, I would probably try niacinamide first, since that's what Joan Mathews Larson, seems to use In addition to many other things.

    Her website is wonderful.

    Cheers

  • Such amazing info, needed in our society do desperately.

  • I have SEVERE hypoglycemia day and night from alcohol withdrawal two months ago. When I take B complex right now it feels like a drug overdose. Any ideas why that could be? I heard nicain can help low blood sugar but I am concerned because of my reaction to the B complex. Thanks for any help.

  • @will51183 Will, I don't know. I would contact Dr. Larson's office and ask them. I'm sure they will know. • @larryshobbs Would they advise on specific questions or do you have to pay or sign up for their program?

  • @will51183 Will, I would just call and ask for their advise. I don't think they will charge you.

  • This is so true. My body was crying out " get me some B vitamins" and as soon as I did I began to feel alot better.

  • is it ok to take syntetic vitamin b3 or is natural better? does niacin raise dopamine levels in the brain ?

  • @sonicblast3

I've never read anything about synthetic vs natural vitamin B3.

I don't know if niacin raises dopamine levels or not.

I've never read anything about this.

  • Thanks for the info. I also like the music. Could you tell me the name of the piecie from 3:12 till the end please? thx

  • @sonicblast3

The music is from Shawshank Redemption.

  • Thank God for people like Dr. Joan Larson!

Magnesium is another important nutrient that when in short supply can cause "mental health" issues like anxiety and depression.

  • @2healthnuts

    Thanks for the info.

  • @larryshobbs Why do you think when i take niacin amide of 250mg or greater along with my intake of 5htp of 200mg per day causes wired feelings and nauseousness, But if i take niacin amide alone like 1000mg it doesn't do that but i begin to get angry and agitated again. I take 5htp and fish oil and vitmins because i had low serotonin and gaba i also take taurine.

The first day i stoped takeing 5htp and took like 1000mg niacinamide I was feeling very relaxed, but after that i felt i needed 5htp.

  • @cjswebsite

    5-HTP can cause nausea.

I think this is due to being converted into serotonin in the gut.

Vitamin B3 (niacinamide) is involved in the conversion.

You might try taking them at different times.

Or you might try taking the 5-HTP in divided doses -- 100 mg twice a day.

You might also try taking L-tryptophan rather than 5-HTP.

One therapist said that in 90% of people, tryptophan works as well as 5-HTP. In the other 10% of people, either 5-HTP or tryptophan works better.

  • @cjswebsite Too much serotonin can cause anxious. I've experienced this.

Anxiety is a common side effect with serotonin reuptake inhibitors such as Prozac, Zoloft, etc.

Here is what I think is happening. Chemicals in the brain need to be in balance.

When you drive one chemical too high (serotonin), it's out of balance with the other chemicals.

Even though people think of serotonin as making you feel mellow, one paper noted that 5-HTP could cause stimulation a couple hours after taking it.

  • How much Niacin should I be taking a day?

    Can you overdose on Niacin?

  • DJ,

Dr. Larson notes in her book that she uses anywhere from 100 mg to 3,000 mg -- a wide range.

If it were me, I would start with a small dose, maybe 50 or 100 mg, taken 3 or 4 times per day -- with each meal and at bedtime.

Niacin causes flushing, which many people do not like.

Niacinamide, which is also vitamin B3, does not cause flushing.

For this purpose, you will probably want to use niacinamide.

Niacin and niacinamide are very safe. I would not exceed 3000 mg.

    Larry Hobbs

  • @djsuperstar717

People are given 1500 mg to 3000 mg of niacin to improve cholesterol levels.

Yes, you can take too much niacin, however, it probably would not kill you.

One case report noted that a person took 11,000 mg of niacin and had to go to the hospital because they had low blood pressure that lasted for several hours.

  • I am taking 500mg/1 tab of b3 daily along with b12 and bcomplex. Can B3 help ADD suffers?

  • Joey,

    I don't know.

Dr. Larson does not talk about it in her book.

    Larry Hobbs

  • many months since a comment is on here. I have been very depressed since about 13 years old when i got my first panick attack. I have been masking the problem with alcohol and i am 33 and my depression and anxiety are at their worst. I have cut down tremendously lately and the anxiety is going down but the depression always seems to linger. But i remember even before the anxiety i always felt kind of down and tired as a boy. You think this could be a vitamin deficiency?

  • markenhagen,

    I don't know.

I would not try to guess.

If possible, I would go see Dr. Larson.

She does lab tests for everything to figure out exactly what is wrong.

    Psychiatry does not do this.

  • markenhagen,

  • do all the supplements, and a high impact cardio training like Karate 3 x's week. You won't have a choking, stabbing, or depressed feeling again. Hard CARDIO activity.

  • It would not let me post a direct link, but to see Daniel Amen, MD noting that "treating all depression the same invites disaster", ...

    search my YouTube videos for:

"Dr Amen, treating all depression the same invites disaster"

    and for:

"Dr Amen, depression is a symptom, not an single illness"

  • Yes, there are tests you can do in order to determine exactly what is causing the problem.

Dr. Larson is big on doing lab tests.

This is one of her complaints about psychiatry -- they don't do any lab tests.

Everyone they diagnose with depression is treated the same.

But treating everyone is a mistake.

Dr. Amen says "treating everyone the same invites disaster."

  • You might do a Google search for "portugual orthomolecular medicine" to see if you can find a doctor near you.

It's unfortunate that doctors are unaware of natural medicine.

  • I'm so sorry to hear that.

    Thanks for sharing the information.

I would talk to a doctor who practices natural medicine.

I imagine they can help you solve your problem of panic and depression.

It might be as simple as taking some tryptophan and some other nutrients.

You might also contact Dr. Larson via email or phone and ask her.

Here contact info is listed at the end of the video.

  • wow this is a very interesting factoid. 0:54

  • I agree - interesting.

The fact you appear to be referring to is that Joan Mathews Larson notes that the anti-anxiety drug Vallium was made by trying to copy vitamin B3, niacinamide.

    Larry Hobbs

  • simply add an annotation to the video if u have the original or hand. I understood what u meant. Thanks for the upload.

  • Thanks for the suggested.

I added an annotation noting the spelling error.

    Thanks.

    Larry Hobbs

  • Very informative and compelling, but please correct the last bit of the video. Spelling makes all the difference in helping people take things a little more seriously. Addiction is spelled wrong. People might need help with addition, but this video has nothing to do with math skills. Please change it.

  • Thank you for letting me know.

Unfortunately, the only way to correct it is to delete this video clip, and upload a new one which would have a different URL.

So anyone who tells someone, "Hey, you may be interested in this clip," the video would not be there any more, and the person would not necessarily know that a new, corrected video had been uploaded.

  • so Niacin prevents anxiety attacks

  • It has anti-anxiety effects.

In another video clip, she also notes that a deficiency of zinc and vitamin B6 can cause anxiety. It's called pyroluria.

She also notes that hypoglycemia can cause anxiety.

Therefore, correcting hypoglycemia will correct this, if this is the cause.

In yet another video clip, she notes that food allergies can cause panic attacks.

So, eliminating allergic foods would correct this, if this is the cause.

The amino acids tryptophan and tyrosine may also help.

  • oh okay thanks

  • You're welcome.

Two other compounds that have anti-anxiety effects are

    - GABA

    - Inositol

You might also go to Dr. Larson's website and read about anxiety.

It's a very good, informative site with lots of great information.

    1. HealthRecovery D O T com

    2. Click on "Depression Free, Naturally" in the middle at the bottom.

    3. Click on "Soothing the Anxious Brain"

  • I would strongly encourage you to download the entire video for $5.

I have nothing to do with it, but it's fascinating.

I will post a video of how Dr. Larson came to do what she does.

Briefly, 30 years ago, her son became addicted to drugs and alcohol, went into "talk therapy", then came home and committed suicide.

As a mother, she wanted to stop the suffering of all the children of the world.

    I love her for this.

    It's her life's work.

The music is from Shawshank Redemption.

  • Very interesting. I'm gonna look into this. If you know, please tell me the name of the piece of music at the end.
