Hey I need advice! I have a monkey pod rain tree, its in the Sumac family,, I grew it from seed! its only about 6in tall now,, stringy stem, pod on top with cool leaves coming out.. But this friggin thing usually grows 80ft! and I live in Buffalo NY. No planting this tree outside,, question is, can it be Bonsai'd? and when should I start?
@wanaply9 All plants can be bonsai'ed. If it were me, I would get a decent container for it.. The best box's are styrofoam boxes from fruit shops... Grab one on them, and pot it up. Leave it for about 2 years, watering, pruning (prune minimal at the beginning as more leaves will encourage faster root growth) and shaping it as it grows. Once it's big enough, and you have a shape you like (this will take at least 2 to 3 years, then re-pot it in a smaller pot and trim the roots.
@MrIGrowDank the reason they have 138786 videos is because they are a copyany type thing based on tutorials, and they dont directly do it they get other people do do it they just upload this guy hasnt eve nmade 10 videos for expert villiage
it was a great experiance to plant step by step with instructions from an expert.....pl tell me which plants best suited for bonsai ...i live in Ratnagiri...near Goa in India.
@TheBuddhaTv ok im going to have to pass on the hut thing not quite right for me and my tree turned brown and crunchy its probably dead but im getting another thanks.
I have a big maple tree in front of my house. Can I make bonsai tree out of it? Near the big maple tree has many small maple plant. If i put those small maple plant in bonsai pot n soil will it die?
@squage06 any local trees in the state that you live in. Look around at the trees. Do you see Oaks, Pines, Willows, Maples,etc...? Junipers are the most common, but they can be pretty difficult to prune since they have needles instead of leaves. Where I live, Maples would be the easiest. My friend in Fl has a beautiful Oak bonsai. Plus, do you want an indoors or outdoors one?
some other commenters are right, try modulating your voice a little bit and maybe work more on the audio quality of the recording. otherwise, thank you very much for these videos, the information in them is great!
@8adamtwatt1 i only kno how mj lmao but bonsai just mean mini tree dont it? sooo all it is trimming down the roots tht keeps a plant small < course other things but oh my god i can see where your goin with this idea! haha
So I'm guessing you couldn't make a bonsai out of a spruce tree seeing as the shape of the tree isn't right or suited for bonsai. I mean what type of trees could you use that would look the best for bonsai that grow in Ontario Canada? One tree that I can think of would be a maple tree, but the leaves would seam too big.
You just loop the staple around so that there is more surface of the staple area inside the pot. You want it to have two points that will be bent outwards on the bottom of the pot.
Chinese Elm, or Japanese garden juniper are the best beginner species that are bonsai specific and not native to Australia. This would be easier if I knew what part of Australia b/c I could look up the weather.
I used to recommend junipers but they tend to die if their soil does not drain well, or if they are watered too much or too little. These days I recommend Chinese Elm because they grow like weeds, and are tolerant of overwatering and poor soil.
Random ?, but could I make a cherry blossom tree into a bonsai type tree???
I want to grow a tree in memory of my daughter, but I am scared to plant it due to natural disaters harming it. I might move and dont want to leave behind a tree that I have been caring for either, ya know?
Anyway, if it were possible to use a cherry blossom tree would it develop flowers like normal cherry blossom trees??
Can a black walnut tree be bonsai'd? I've heard from one source that they don't make good bonsai on a ccount of a long, deep-running tap root. But if it can be done, do you have any tips for success?
if the leaves aren't too big it will work, cut out the tap root and it ought to be fine. I have done this to a tree of mine and I have been growing it for about 4 years since.

I think you use regular potting soil mixed with pebbles (there's a specific kind but the name escapes me). The ratio is something like 2/3 soil 1/3 pebbles.
gay gay gay gay gay you are all pussies and losers Oh I love this new Audio Priview thing lol hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
what is unique about a bonsai pot and not a regular pot and why does it have holes in it. Also why is 'bonsai soil!' needed? Whats wrong with natural ground soil?!
Bon + sai means tree + pot, the pots are from heavy, hq material. The hole in the pot (often there are more big holes and several small ones) allows the tree drop water down (in a case of accident) besides this many bonsais can be watered from bottom. (Sometimes you are unable to water them twice a day...)
on the junipers, the tip of the branches has some leaves or needles that have a slight yellow tint and some look dried. what do i do? more water? trim it?
There are a couple different reasons the needles could be yellow, Either it is winter where you are and it is winter color. Even evergreens can change color in winter. Or the needles have been cut recently and are dieing back a little to help with the trees Vigor. If the tree is dried to where you touch it and the needles fall off, the tree is dead or near dead, prune off All dead needles and do not do any work further to the tree as it could be a finished bonsai!
yeah it turns out to be just the die-back from the tip pruning of junipers. i realise its normal for them to do this...and then later on when they are dry u can pull them off etc.
thats why ive started not to like junipers now days cause of this. and they have lots of die back if not pruned regularly.
My Bonsai is doin´ good... At first, I got confused because I read a bunch of info about maintenance... well... I´ve been learning... By the way... Like three days ago,my Bonsai started to have yellow leaves... Which I think is not good... But well... I started to give him a little bit more of water, and he´s ok now... Green leaves... It´s great... Thanks for asking... Take care... Greetings from Costa Rica...
Hi dude... I just got a Bonsai today... I really don´t know exactly about the maintenance and that kind of things about Bonsai... It´s a Tropical Bonsai... I think this video will help me a bit... Thanks... Greetings from Costa Rica...
could you use a branch of a tree to make a bonsai? i am wondering because i have an apple tree in my back yard, and also there are lots of oaks growing near me, i was wondering if i could just cut off a nice branch, sort of like a house plant, and if so how do you get that fat aged trunk look at the base of the bonsai? ~~thanks~~
It is possible, but QUITE complicated and takes a LONG time. Just before the winter you should strip a one inch wide ring of a branch down to half the width of the branch and wrap a bag around the wound, full of fertile soil, and root-growth promoting agent. No touchy for a year. Next year, roots should have grown out of the would. You can saw it off at it's base and pot that. It's survival chance isn't great, but it can.
Nice video. I learn bonsai. I live in the south of france french riviera and my neigbourg - my teacher bonsai have hundred of bonsai. Where do you live ?
Wow really really interesting! I want to start, but i'm unsure on the tree which i should use, what tree would you suggest to someone who has never done this before?
It can be ok to cut off quite a lot, but it really depends on a variety of factors. The health, the type of tree, and the time of year should be considered. Some trees respond much better to a drastic pruning than others, and there should be a good length of time in the growing season (i.e. before winter starts) for the tree to heal.
I was waiting for a hammer after I saw him making a staple from some metal twine. I'm disappointed.

vampd0 3 years ago
Fast draining, gritty soil.
Usually a mix of Bark chips and a gravel like substance and some other stuff that varies depending on the type of tree you want.
but, I am no expert, i just know that regular potting soil holds to much water. That is how you will get root rot.

It can be ok to cut off quite a lot, but it really depends on a variety of factors. The health, the type of tree, and the time of year should be considered. Some trees respond much better to a drastic pruning than others, and there should be a good length of time in the growing season (i.e. before winter starts) for the tree to heal.

Interesting. I'm no expert, but it is really OK to cut so much off of the tree when pruning?
