Shaq's peak year was was in the 99-00 season when he averaged 30 points, 4 assists and 13 rebounds. Now compare to Kareems best year, Kareem averaged 34 points, 5 assists, and 17 rebounds. Kareem > Shaq. (The reason why I'm only pointing out statistics because you are as well)
@kob3fan24 Shaq is different player. He was strong and intimidating. He played like a real center. He was a game changer. Kareem though he was tall, he was skinny and played like a small forward and wasn't a banger. Shaq could have easily destroyed him if they played in thesame era.

Shaq would just bull doze over opponents but could be mitigated by fouls. Shaq was never a good free throw shooter in his career averaging around 50% for his career. Kareem was more humble, hard working, and clutch. As soon as shaq left his teams he would talk smack about them. Just look at how he treated kobe and wade after he left. Brains over Brawn

He had quickness too.He wasn't a good FT shooter but he put the opponents in early foul troubles and penalties.The teams he played for after Lakers didn't know how to use him. They ignored him when he got free from pick and rolls. If they were both in their primes, I'd pick Shaq over Kareem.

You can't rely on stats to say a person is better than another when those stats are almost even. You really can't even rely on stats period. I agree with you on the mental part and big performances in the finals. To be a great basketball player you need that, the killer instinct, heart, the eagerness to win etc..

With all due respect, I think this comment is idiotic. Larry played in a much tougher defensive era and had an equal in Magic. And the thing that everyone forgets when talking about Larry -- Larry had what has been described by his doctors as a career-ending back injury in the summer of 85.

He kept putting up ridiculous numbers, getting MVPs, and winning even after this injury that would have ended other players' careers (not my words, his doctor's). Ridiculous to compare the two. Had Larry remained healthy, he would probably have ended up with 5-6 championships and even more MVPs.
Oh, and as far as basketball IQ is concerned, don't even compare the two. Also, what is Kobe's % in clutch situations? (See the article that ESPN did on this -- wasn't even 30%). Everyone thinks Kobe's clutch but you never see highlight reels of the misses. Larry made more when it mattered. One final note, someone did a study of highest winning percentage of all time -- that's all games (exhibition, reg season, playoffs, etc) and Larry was #1.

Oscar Robertson averaged a triple double in one season, we all know what Wilt did, Bill Russell was one of the greatest Defenders of ALLTIME and he had 11 rings, and MJ is simply MJ. Shaq would just bull doze over opponents but could be mitigated by fouls. Shaq was never a good free throw shooter in his career averaging around 50% for his career. Kareem was more humble, hard working, and clutch. As soon as shaq left his teams he would talk smack about them. Just look at how he treated kobe and wade after he left. Brains over Brawn

He had quickness too.He wasn't a good FT shooter but he put the opponents in early foul troubles and penalties.The teams he played for after Lakers didn't know how to use him. You can't rely on stats to say a person is better than another when those stats are almost even. You really can't even rely on stats period. I agree with you on the mental part and big performances in the finals. To be a great basketball player you need that, the killer instinct, heart, the eagerness to win etc..

Plus, Since 2003, Tim's played with top 5 PG in the league Tony Parker and GREATEST euro player of all time Manu Ginobli. Yet he never catches any flack for having great help.

Just browsing some of those top player lists in th other threads. many people claim that Duncan is the number 1 player of the 2000s and it's not even a discusssion. I just don't get that. Duncan has never dominated statistically on the level of a Shaq, Kobe or Lebron. Head to head he has more often than not came up small against Kobe. people claim that he's the consummate winner and laud him for his consistency. But somehow forget that everytime he wins he's had a STACKED team.

With all due respect, I think this comment is idiotic. Larry played in a much tougher defensive era and had an equal in Magic. And the thing that everyone forgets when talking about Larry -- Larry had what has been described by his doctors as a career-ending back injury in the summer of 85.

@oneoverjordan23 He kept playing because that's what Larry did -- no excuses. He kept putting up ridiculous numbers, getting MVPs, and winning even after this injury that would have ended other players' careers (not my words, his doctor's). Ridiculous to compare the two. Had Larry remained healthy, he would probably have ended up with 5-6 championships and even more MVPs.

Oh, and as far as basketball IQ is concerned, don't even compare the two. Also, what is Kobe's % in clutch situations? (See the article that ESPN did on this -- wasn't even 30%). Everyone thinks Kobe's clutch but you never see highlight reels of the misses. Larry made more when it mattered. One final note, someone did a study of highest winning percentage of all time -- that's all games (exhibition, reg season, playoffs, etc) and Larry was #1.

His 40+ 9 game streak. Kobe has 107+ games of scoring 40 or more points. 81 POINTS! His 50+ 4 game streak. Kobe has made it to the nba all-defensive team 11 times!, 9 times on the first team! Kobe has the record for most threes made in the game at 12! 5 RINGS! etc etc etc.........

Guys in 1 year he will pass shaq, in 2 years he will pass Mj and Wilt. (he will be 34) at that time. If he only averages 23 points per season. In 5 years he will pass Kareem with 39,138. with players like nash, hill and jkidd. kobe can play another 5 years. larry is 27th on that list

In fact, Kobe was not only a better 3pt shooter in the post-season, he took far more, and made far more. For those that claim that Bird was a better 3pt shooter...he MADE 80 in 164 post-season games...and on a .321 percenatge. Kobe has made 275 in 208 post-season games, and on a .335 percentage.

but kobe is a way better scorer, one on one defender. they both have high basketball IQs and both are clutch. but larry averaged more turnovers. and in assist kobe is not far from bird, with kobe having 4.7 and bird 6.3. so larry was a slightly better passer and a better rebounder. but kobe would kill larry one on one. ask larry who is better

I don't care who revolutionized the game of basketball. That is not the question. The question is who is the best player. Me, being a Kobe fan, can say that MJ was the best to play the game. If MJ is the template to which we compare all basketball players to then Kobe has to be the second best player. If the question is who revolutionized the game, then that's a whole other issue.

These young kids, who only see highlights of MJ and see Kobe play live believe he is the 2nd best. Kobe's in the top 5 of all time, probably 4th or 5th. Oscar Robertson averaged a triple double in one season, we all know what Wilt did, Bill Russell was one of the greatest Defenders of ALLTIME and he had 11 rings, and MJ is simply MJ. I might put Kobe ahead of Bill based on talent and skill level though.

When Oscar and Bill were playing, they were going against the best competition of their time.
