What about the hydro-electric lock and dam at Lockport Illinois on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal? It was built at the same time and is still producing power.
@Palifiox I had another different set of less crappy music originally, but then Youtube said I was infringing on the copyright. I added this song to the video from their list of free stuff.
(Circ 1986) While repairing a battery bank for telecommunications distribution hub, my guide took me and a coworker into the Philippine mountains to see the power plant. After crossing Indiana Jones rope walkways we reached an operational hydro-electric power plant. Still running was a Pelton Water Wheel from 1913 and a GE generator a patent date of 14 Aug 1900. The switch gear was something from a Frankenstein film. I will post my slides after I converted them to digital.
I think it's funny how people posing in old photos just had their arms flat to the side and the most basic pose possible. I believe it's because the camera shutter had to stay open much longer (like 10-30 seconds) so the basic pose was necessary and I understand why, but it still looks funny. I'm going to start posing like that in photos. :)
I originally had a different (annoying)song, but owners rights was a problem and they made me switch out the sound track, so now none of the video sound is not available, just the current annonying song.
I agree completely. I am baffled that anyone would think the music would complement the majesty of the engineering. At least speakers can be turned off.
They gave tours when it first opened about 25 years ago. It must be impressive because the entire volume of the river flows through the station unless river levels are very high.
JD, Thanks for the great video. That is a keeper! Don't know how lomg they will keep that station around. Hopefully forever but you never know. Later, Jack
My pleasure, sharing the video. It's pretty noisey in the plant when it is running, so I just blanked out the plant audio altogether. I happen to like the song I used, and it's much better than no sound at all. Thanks for your comments.
you have to love the engineering. i mean, those older units usually run like shit (the ones i was around would catch fire alot) but to realize that those were built in 1897, it's pretty amazing.
yea i was gonn say the same thing. its amazing tesla built the very first hydroelectric powerplants at niagra falls for america and canada and thats how the power grid was created,i wonder if he was apart of this project, he probably was considering how old it is. just stick a wardenclyffe tower next to this and give everyone wireless electricity!!!
always could try bagpipes, but really this type, only my opinion, flows with tracks less vocals and more sounds. listen to the web advertisement for the braun pulsonic razor, the sound might work
Perhaps, if you are going to add music, consider celtic or bluegrass? - and include some of the natural sounds in behind the music - balance them well.
I work in a Seventy Five year old Hydro Plant in England, lovely to see this video. Perhaps I should do one too. I must admit though, our machines aren't quite so splendid!
Nice video.............. music could be improved

The lock and dam at Lockport Illinois looks very similar. I'm not sure who designed it.

What is the two units (with the number 8 on the left side) attached to each other at time 1:11? Is that a AC to DC converter?

This isn't a video, it's a slide show, and it's not really a tour, either. The music is obnoxious. Had to turn it off.
TheMrBlinx 1 year ago
@TheMrBlinx Maybe it is a "mixed media presentation". The images where collected while Jim Besha was giving a tour of the facility.

Great music too, but I'd love to hear the gennys running too!

You can hear the generators in these two very short videos:
"Mechanicville Power Plant" and "Mechanicville Hydro Plant Generators".

Thx m8, I guess theres a bit too much background noise to hear the humming of the stators clearly.

This is very close to where I live! a few years ago we drove past it I gotta definitely take the tour now!

I am a Hydro Electric Station Operator at a 62 MW plant in Turners Fall, MA.
The plant went online in February of 1916. I would love a tour of this plant. Does anyone know who I should contact to make this happen?

I think [Unforgetable] by Nat King Cole would be just right for this one. The generators are as unforgetable as Nat and as beautiful as the song
