Good review, it definitely is a classic but I think there's room for improvement even in the best Sonic game. The one thing that bothers me the most is how Tails works in the bonus levels, the lag between the player and Tails movements makes the later levels near impossible to beat. Also annoying to me is how you can't roll into a ball at any point in mid-air, because there are spots where you'll end up defenseless and getting hit for not memorizing the level, unable to play purely on reflexes.
@Alianger I didn't comment on the bonus levels as I generally skip them. But I skip them because I don't care for them, lol. I agree, Tails started robbing me in the later bonus stages. Actually, now that you mention it, I didn't care for the blue spheres stuff either...
As far as the mid-air ball. I'm not certain I know what you mean. As soon you you jump you roll into a ball. But you are still vulnerable to projectile attacks.
@implantgames What I meant about the rolling ball is, when Sonic does one of three things a. bounce on a spring b. run off a cliff with no slope or c. jump off a handle (as seen in mystic cave zone here), he is moving through air without the player being able to turn him into a ball. So if for example you're hitting a spring then you're always vulnerable to whatever you're bouncing into that you cannot see in beforehand, therefore having to memorize levels. But if you're not into collecting...
the emeralds (I love that part of the game myself), I can see how taking a few hits here and there isn't nearly as frustrating when you can always grab on to the few rings that Sonic drops and stay alive.
@Alianger Ah! I see what you mean now. Yeah, I hadn't even though about the springs and vines, Sonic is fairly exposed. And to see the real ending you need emeralds (which means you need 50 rings)... point taken. Hitting a spring and shooting into one of those damn monkeys on Emerald Hill is a pain :D
This was a very good review. And you're perfectly right, of course. This game was, and still is, amazing. Seeing all of these different clips of game play put me into nostalgia mode, pretty hard.
BTW, the key titles that lead me to hardcore gaming are Contra, Super Mario Bros and Of course Sonic 2 (I was introduced to 16 bit gaming with this title).
