Okay I just purchased a Mossberg 590 20" barrel ghost ring sights, speed feed stock. Im pissed its not the a1 version. Can someone enlighten me to the difference? Metal trigger housing and metal safety. Mine says it passes mil spec 34443?
THANK YOU Hickok. I don't understand why so many people shrug at this gun just because it has an aluminum receiver. Yes, steel is stronger, but is also heavier. I think people are scared of the aluminum warping. It's gonna take quite a bit of torque or heat to do that with this receiver. 2,000+ shells through my 500, no problems what-so-ever.
Hey! Great video! I just bought this same shotgun last night at my local gunstore and I shot it today at the range. Its awesome! My shoulder is pretty sore. I expected it though. This is my first gun purchase and also was my first time firing a gun at all! :)
Hickok. you old dude, your shooting as always is spot on and bad ass sir. I can only hope to be half of your accuracy some day! Good day to you and keep up the vids!
i bought a bright shiny new remington xr-100... i thought i was a good shot, then my coworker showed me what it really can do.... people like hickock and my coworker make me sad because i just can't ever shoot as well as they can.
@fistfullofitch It's called going to range and shooting ass tones of rounds, practice my man that's the only reason they are better, hours and endless hours at the range :) Enjoy and safe shooting.
Dude's got some serious aim lol... I have never really shot guns much but I bet tons of people couldn't get a decent grouping like that with an ar and he does it with bead sights on a shottie.
mossber590(a1) is such a nice shotgun.. especially parkerized. one of the reasons that the military still uses shotguns in combat situations is tha the shotgun is very versatile. it can use lots of different types of ammo. (i.e.) slugs, bucksshot, breaching ammo, flares, fin stabilized grenades. etc.. etc.. so you can never write it off as obsolite, it's deadly and reliable.. and effective...ask any Marine :)
Can you replace the stock? I was able to shoot a Mossberg 500 with a collapsible stock during weapons training in the Police academy. I loved it and would like to purchase my own. All the other shotguns were too long for my arm span so I had to use my range master's personal shotgun. I need a shorter shotgun. :)
@Salekdarling hell yeah man there are so many different types of stalks out there for shotguns just go look at a local gun shop or sporting good store
@glock2026 this is coming from the person who doesnt know how to spell MOSSBERG. It is Mossberg not mossburg you troll. I have always found it interesting that Remington the far superior gun only offers a 2 year warranty on the Remington 870 while Mossberg gives you a 10 year warranty. Remington must not be to sure about the products they a selling. Dont get me wrong i shelled out the money and got a proper remington 870 police magnum, but i find no difference between it and my 3 mossberg 590a1s
i always said the reason they made 590 mossburgs , is for the people who did not want to pony up for an 870. dont get me wrong nothing wrong with a mouseburg just not as high a quality as an 870 . just cause military uses gun dont mean anything , they take lowest bidder too.
@nickalarz Most branches of the American military a Mossberg 590A1. The only difference between the A1 and the regular 590 is the 590A1 has a thicker/stronger barrel without the heat shield. Also the have a metal, istead of plastic safety lever and trigger gaurd. Besides those few differences they are very similar.
im sorry but this is first time im going to have to disagree with you here sir. YOU are Definitely NOT the jack of all trades when it comes to guns, you are the MASTER OF ALL TRADES when it comes to guns!!! you are my HERO!
Hey Hickok, I noticed when it goes off that the slide seems to come back a bit, exposing the back of the brass. What's the deal with that? Is it suppose to come back for a recoil absorption or what?
Nice grouping on the gong, the 590A1 is the best shotgun ive owned, much better then the Remington 870 marine magnum i owned. It functions much smoother. You cannot go wrong with this shotgun.
Guys, dont be hatin but i am really new to the firearms world, and after some training i was thinking about picking one of these up, do you think it would be advisable to purchase something like this??
@BUCKSHOTman123 Depends on a lot. I would recommend you go to gun stores near you (not Walmart) and ask the guys there. SInce i don't know exactly what you want it for and your price tag and whatnot they would be your best bet. Remember: Guns don't kill people, people kill people.
@BUCKSHOTman123 I believe that shotguns are the most practical and most versatile firearms available, and they can also be one of the funnest. My first shotgun was a Mossberg 500 combo. It came with a 28" barrel for hunting and an 18.5" for home defense. I have used it to take all kinds of upland birds, rabbits, ducks, geese, and even a mule deer. It stands ready for home defense if it is ever needed. It is also a gun I can actually afford to shoot just for fun as well.
where you being sarcastic about the bayonette lug. You were kinda vague when describing it. You said it is usefull when deer hunting? I need clarifacation. why would a lug on a shotgun be important.
Great video! I am a recent subscriber and relatively new to this level of interest and activity in forearms, so I've greatly enjoyed a bunch of your videos already. Would like to see a review of the Springfield EMP, since I see you are a 1911 fan...
My shoulder hurts just watching this video. I put 3 rounds of 12 gauge 1 1/8 oz #8 shot thru my 870 Wingmaster the other day, and my shoulder still hurt at bed time. You are lucky to be able to shoot a shotgun like this. At least I can enjoy watching you shoot a 12 gauge. My body can’t take the pounding.
Thanks for the video, I have recently purchased my 590A1LE and beside the heavy barrel I really wanted the bayonet lug. Nice to see the range with the slugs you put down range; great video.
I just picked up a 590 special purpose w/9 shot tube, heat shield, tri-rail and bead sight today. One of the things I also like is that it has provisions for mounting a picatinny rail which would allow for optics such as a holo sight or red dot sight, which would obviously be handy in a low light shooting scenario where you can't see the bead sight.
Great video. Very nice quality and puts a smile on your face seeing an older gentleman like a kid in a candy store, lol. That's a real nice shooting range you have there on some real nice property. I'm jealous!
I don't mean any disrespect towards you; in fact, I am very jealous of the guns you have and the range you've got set up there. But I would say that when you were firing the 590 you sounded just the slightest bit like a supervillain. Especially that line, "Oh, slugs do the job, don't they?"
Felt like you had just captured the hero and was about to finish him off, or you were relaxing at your range right before one of your henchmen comes up to you with really bad news.
I searched the internet and found someone who had the same problem - also with Winchester 000 buckshot. His solution was to touch up the crimped end of the shell with some Elmers glue. Since that time I have only shot slugs (which have no filler) and had no problems.
I have a 590. I had a jamming problem shooting 000 buckshot - Winchester ammo. Rounds in the magazine failed to load. The plug on the end of the spring in the magazine was stuck. The problem? The white powdery spacing filler in the buckshot rounds had leaked into the magazine. When I finally figured it out and traced it back to this filler material, I couldn't believe no one else had this problem. The filler was very sticky.
M500/M590 or Remington 870? The great debate. The military didn't switch to the M500 purely because of price, the m500 features an ambidextrous safety and 2 extractors compared to the 870's one, for greater reliability. Both great weapons, m500 is just more user friendly for lefties.
@Hickok45, that grouping on the gong with the slugs was incredible, I've always admired your abilities, but I'm vastly impressed with this performance with nothing more than a bead dot on the muzzle, wow.
@Hickok45 I can only speak for NECC (Navy), but according to our consolidated maintenance plan we can shoot the m500a1 all the way to 50k rounds and not have to replace a single part, assuming nothing breaks up to that point. In my experience I've only had 2 things break on any of my M500's, a cartridge stop broke in half, and a trigger assembly retaining pin, which didn't impede weapon operation at all, it was found later in maintenance. Both weapons are still in use, I've never DRMO'd a m500.
@MrGizmo757 I have had my hands on over 50 M500's as a maintenance man and line coach via the Navy and have NEVER had any problem with the bolt going into battery nor any pitting. Proper maintenance and the use of correct (2 and 3/4") shells will go a long ways towards flawless operation.
@nuclearsea9 They use it because its cheap to buy in mass numbers and maintain and repair. Just like the GLock. The glock is made of plastic/polymer. the Navy seals use a Sig 229 with a nitrate coating so dose secret service. Glocks just like mossbergs are cheap. that's why they use them. Just because its popular doesn't make it the best. My Squire from the phillapenes is a brand i bet you never heard of is better then all of those. what about a stevens. or a savage fox?
i have a mossberg 500 spx. absolutely awsome. how anyone can badmouth this shotgun is beyond me. especially when they are comparing them to the 870. you are comparing apples to apples. if anyone is watching this video doing their research, the mossbergs are great. you will not regret it. again, anyone that can complain about this is beyond me - i have not had 1 problem. reg 590 (compared to 590a1) has a slightly thinner barrel composite trigger guard and safety. 500 just holds less ammo.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i have a 590. its a piece of junk. even My barrel has had little pits of metal just come off of it. when i pump it sometimes the bolt wont lock fully and it wont fire. it jams all the time. i also have a 500. it also has all the exact same problems. it looks cool. i have the vented heat shield on mine but as far as quality is concerned its crap. ill take a rem. 870 over this any day with a modified elevator of course. :-)
@hickok45 Hey hicok great video and shotgun where did you buy this shotgun i want this exact model but with a heat shield Ive found some that come with the heat shield but they have speed feed stocks this wouldn't be a problem if i knew if a butt stock side saddle would fit over a speed feed stock ?

Felt like you had just captured the hero and was about to finish him off, or you were relaxing at your range right before one of your henchmen comes up to you with really bad news.

@Haelis I was getting a Yosemite Sam vibe when he was shooting those jugs of water up close haha

@MrGizmo757 - I'll take exception to that comment sir... my wife was made in the Philippines and she's built pretty good.
Hickok45 - I've always enjoyed your video reviews and I like your range too. Long shots on the gong... nice!

If you look close you can see the slugs in flight. Cool vid.

DracoOmnia 3 months ago
@MrGizmo757 I have had my hands on over 50 M500's as a maintenance man and line coach via the Navy and have NEVER had any problem with the bolt going into battery nor any pitting. Proper maintenance and the use of correct (2 and 3/4") shells will go a long ways towards flawless operation.

hickock when you buy a gun where do you normally get it like cheaper than dirt walmart gun store?
watchforfinger 3 months ago

500 just holds less ammo.

i have a 590. its a piece of junk. even My barrel has had little pits of metal just come off of it. when i pump it sometimes the bolt wont lock fully and it wont fire. it jams all the time. i also have a 500. it also has all the exact same problems. it looks cool. i have the vented heat shield on mine but as far as quality is concerned its crap. ill take a rem. 870 over this any day with a modified elevator of course. :-)
